Symantec Rolls Out Internet Security 2008

The growing problem of identity theft is a key focus of the 2008 versions of Symantec's Norton Internet Security and Antivirus programs, released on Tuesday. The Cupertino, California-based company said that the packages, designed for Windows XP and Windows Vista, feature enhanced protection against identity theft and other online security threats.

A new Norton feature, Identity Safe, allows users to control what information is shared with a Web site. It stores and encrypts passwords and other confidential data until needed, and automatically fills in passwords and Web forms. This feature is designed to protect against keystroke loggers -- hidden malware that secretly captures keystrokes, then transmits the data to a remote attacker.

Identity Safe embodies some of the ideas in Symantec's Identity Initiative. First announced in January, the Initiative is an attempt by Symantec to address what Forrester analyst Natalie Lambert called the "huge problem" of identity theft. According to Symantec, 53 percent of Internet users no longer give personal information to Web sites because of identity theft fears, and 14 percent have stopped paying bills online. ..

Microsoft's Geneva Server: Hailstorm done right

National ID? How about a global ID?

The Federation for Identity and Cross-Credentialing Systems (FiXs) -- a little-known group of non-profits, government contractors, commercial entities, and government agencies -- has just unveiled a first-of-its-kind global infrastructure to support distributed, integrated identity management and cross-credentialing across organizations.

The implementation combines several existing security technologies along with a set of trusted models, policies, and operating rules to insure the accurate identity of personnel accessing physical sites or logical systems.

Already in a pilot mode at a handful of government agencies and defense contractors, the FiXs identity management initiative does not have a hard date for broad deployment, although the impediments do not appear to be technical. "The cultural gap with the public in general is still too wide," said Dr. Mike Mestrovich, president of FiXs. "I think there would have to be a public consensus to move us in that direction and I don't see that happening until at least 2009 or beyond."

Bill would let ID theft victims seek restitution

A bipartisan bill that would let victims of identity theft seek restitution for money and time they spent repairing their credit history was introduced on Tuesday in the Senate.

The legislation would also give federal prosecutors more tools to combat identity theft and cybercrime, according to sponsors Democrat Patrick Leahy of Vermont and Republican Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania.

Leahy is chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Specter is the ranking Republican on the panel.

Last year, 8.4 million Americans were victims of identity theft, and many were left with a bad credit report, which takes months or years to repair, the lawmakers said.
