Microsoft's Big Bet: Win Within the Web

Although the latest version of Microsoft Windows is more than six months from shipping, company brass already have christened Vista as the best and biggest Windows release since Windows 95.

The company is making bold predictions, claiming Vista will be preloaded on as many as 200 million new personal computers in the first 24 months that the product is available. Windows 95 shipped on a mere 67 million new PCs during its first two years. These numbers are important. The prospects of nearly every product Microsoft makes ride on maintaining the ubiquity of Windows, which has in excess of 90 percent of the PC operating system market. It's been five years since the current Windows version was released, and Windows XP now is looking rather dated.

Intel confident of appeal win in EU anti-trust case

Intel President Paul Otellini has said the company is confident of winning its appeal against the record $1.45 billion fine which was imposed by EU anti-trust regulators in May this year. Speaking to the BBC following his keynote address at the company's annual developer forum, Mr Otellini said, "I can't wait to get our side of the story out in the public. I continue to believe and assert they (the European Commission) have got it wrong. We have appealed and we will win on appeal." AMD first complained about Intel's business practices in 2000, but it wasn't until high-profile raids were conducted on Intel offices in July 2007 that the company was charged with breaching competition rules.

MP3 Blogs Offer File Sharing Even the RIAA Could Love

Although the term "file sharing" has all sorts of ugly connotations, it's not necessarily a bad thing. In some cases, it's even a win-win-win situation for the recording industry, music lovers -- and Google.

There are countless MP3 file-sharing sites that don't look anything like BitTorrent or Lime Wire. They're low-key, homegrown blogs that don't host illicitly copied music, but do provide links to third-party sites, or storage lockers, such as Megashare, where pirated music is stored. These bloggers do it for the love of the music, they say, but it doesn't hurt that they make a little money from advertising along the way.

Microsoft targets Oracle licensing to win customers

The forthcoming launch of SQL Server 2008 will see Microsoft focus its considerable resources on the issue of licensing, to win customers from rivals Oracle and IBM.

Speaking to ZDNet Australia's Sister site ZDNet.co.uk, Microsoft's UK marketing director for databases, Matt Dunstan (pictured), said: "Our challenge, now we have picked off a lot of the low-hanging fruit, is to attack the traditional Oracle strongholds."

Dunstan, who is in charge of the battle with Oracle and IBM, said Microsoft will exploit weaknesses it sees in Oracle's licensing and treatment of its customers. It is a bold strategy from a company that has itself frequently been pilloried for its licensing policies, but Dunstan clearly thinks Oracle's licensing is a weak spot.

Bing aiming to win this Christmas

The holiday season is nearly upon us and Microsoft has signaled it wants to be the search engine for Christmas this year. Since the launch of Bing, Microsoft has managed to snatch 10.7% market share with 1.1 billion searches in August alone. The advert has a holiday season feel as a young child visits Santa to explain his wish list for Christmas.

EU: Microsoft pulling IE from Win 7 not enough

Microsoft's decision to pull Internet Explorer from Windows 7 in Europe isn't enough to address EU antitrust complaints about the company's abuse of the market, the European Commission said Friday. The continent's officials now say that Microsoft's proposed solution would actually hurt competition as it would leave the five percent of those buying retail copies of Windows each year with few options. Instead of having an immediate choice, buyers would have to resort to obtaining a physical copy of a web browser or else some alternative.
