Full Review: Windows Vista December CTP

Love-him-hate-him Paul Thurrot has released a four part in-depth review of Vista's December CTP. "I think people are going to be surprised by how good the Windows Vista December 2005 Community Technical Preview (CTP, or build 5270) really is.

After years of painful delays and an uncertain couple of months since the last CTP, Microsoft shipped a near-feature-complete Vista build to testers this week, and the prognosis is extremely positive. From what I can see, Vista has turned the corner. The December CTP is an exciting release, stable and full of new features. In this review, I'll examine those new features, and the features that have changed since the previous CTP, build 5231"

Windows Anytime Upgrade: Digital Distribution To End

Microsoft had this to say on its website: "In an effort to streamline the Windows Anytime Upgrade experience for our customers and open the program to additional markets worldwide, Microsoft and its partners have decided to end digital product key distribution on February 20, 2008."

With Windows Anytime Upgrade, customers could upgrade to another version of Vista by purchasing a digital product key. Microsoft has now decided to stop distributing product keys online. Those who now want to upgrade, will have to buy a Windows Anytime Upgrade Kit from a local retailer or from Microsoft.

From Vista's EULA found here (PDF) :

13. UPGRADES. To use upgrade software, you must first be licensed for the software that is eligiblefor the upgrade. Upon upgrade, this agreement takes the place of the agreement for the software you upgraded from. After you upgrade, you may no longer use the software you upgraded from.

Windows 7 Anytime Upgrade retail boxing revealed

AeroXperience's Bryant Zadegan has got his hands on an exclusive look at the Windows 7 Anytime Upgrade retail boxing. Those who are familiar with the Windows Vista Anytime Upgrade will remember that it was only pushed online, but Zadegan says that "Microsoft will indeed be pushing Anytime Upgrade through retail channels." On Tuesday, Microsoft unveiled the final design for the regular retail box. The anytime upgrade boxes are the same shape and design as the full version or regular upgrade boxes, except slightly smaller since they just contain a product key used to migrate Windows 7 from Home Premium to Professional or Ultimate from within the Windows 7 control panel. More images are available over at the AeroXperience Blog.

Windows 7 upgrade chart available

Microsoft has made available the official Windows 7 Upgrade chart, via allthingsd which indicates which previous versions of Windows are available for an in-place upgrade to Windows 7, and to which version they can upgrade. You can view the chart below: As you can see from just a glance at the chart, it's relatively confusing. Windows 7 offers no direct upgrade path from XP, which was announced very early on in the Windows 7 development life cycle. Very specific upgrade paths from other versions of Windows Vista exist also. You can perform a "Custom Install" which is pretty much a clean install, but you have the option to install Windows 7 to another disk without overwriting data.

Windows 7 in Europe: full, upgrade and family pack editions

Microsoft has confirmed that upgrade editions of Windows 7 will be available in Europe when the new operating system launches on October 22. The company had previously said that only full version would be on offer. The initial limitation of a full, clean-install only edition was part of the plans for Windows 7 E, a version of Windows that did not come with Internet Explorer and would be the only version available in the EU. Because previous versions of Windows all contain Internet Explorer, Microsoft argued that there could not be upgraded to a version without the browser.

No Windows 7 upgrade option in the EU

Today Microsoft announced the pricing of Windows 7. As previously reported on Neowin, the EU will be getting a version that will not contain IE and because of this Microsoft will be offering no upgrade option in the EU. This harsh line comes as somewhat as a surprise that all EU users that wish to upgrade to Windows 7 must buy a full copy. There is a silver lining to this announcement and it's that the full price of Windows 7 will be at the equaliviant price to the upgrade option.

Beware the gotchas in Microsoft Windows 7 upgrade, family pack pricing

Mary Jo Foley: On July 31, Microsoft went public with two key pieces of Windows 7 pricing information it had been holding back: The cost of its Family Pack and Anytime Upgrade licenses.

My blogging colleague Ed Bott has all the gory details on both, so I won’t try to repeat all the specifics here. (The Cliff Notes version: Family Pack is $150 for three PCs. Anytime Upgrades are roughly the same price as they were with Vista with the notable exception of the upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate.) What I will repeat, however, are a couple of gotchas that are part of Bott’s post.

Upgrade to Windows Live Messenger 8.5 is coming

Back in November we shipped the final version of Windows Live Messenger 8.5 along with several other Windows Live applications and services. A lot of you have already upgraded, and for that we thank you and hope you?re enjoying it as much as we enjoyed building it. Starting soon, we?re going to make it easier for those of you who haven?t upgraded yet to get onto our latest and greatest.

This will happen in two phases. First, everyone running Windows XP or Windows Vista will get a prompt encouraging you to upgrade. When you accept the upgrade, the new unified installer will launch and start upgrading Messenger. While it?s installing, you?ll have the option to download and install other Windows Live applications. You don?t have to take any of them, but we think you?ll like them and hope you?ll give them a try.

Microsoft adjusts Windows7E pricing for limited time

After reporting that Microsoft will be charging up to twice as much for the full version of Windows 7E in Europe compared to Windows 7 in the United States, Microsoft has responded by adjusting their pricing. Consumers can purchase an upgrade for as little as $199 in the U.S. while Europe will pay 309 or $433.99 (US) for the full version. Microsoft states the reason for the missing upgrade for Windows 7, that allows you to upgrade a valid Windows licensed copy of Vista for example to Windows 7 is that Vista came with Internet Explorer 8 pre-installed, while Windows 7E will not.

Microsoft Endorses Product That Turns Off Vista UAC Nags

The latest version of a well-reviewed third-party security policy enhancement system for Windows Vista claims to solve what its manufacturer characterizes as "not a secure solution" to a critical problem Windows historically had with administrator privileges on programs. But in the announcement of the upgrade earlier this week, a key Microsoft product manager is quoted as having acknowledged Vista's own take on the solution was not quite enough, effectively reversing his company's stand on User Account Control.

The product is BeyondTrust Privilege Manager 3.5, and its key new feature is the ability to run Vista's UAC transparently without prompting the user for privilege elevation. In Monday's press release, Microsoft director of client security product management Austin Wilson is quoted as not only endorsing the product, but appearing to agree with BeyondTrust's key contention: that the UAC prompts were not only a nag but an insecure solution in itself.

Workaround Discovered For "Clean Install" With Vista Upgrade

DailyTech has posted a 7-step workaround courtesy of Paul Thurrott (via Microsoft internal documents) on how to perform a clean install with a Windows Vista Upgrade DVD. Per Microsoft's new licensing requirements for Vista, users are required to install a Windows Vista Upgrade from within Windows XP and to make matters worse, the Windows XP license is forfeited. The process may be tedious, but few will argue when they compare the price differences between the upgrade and retail versions. Here we go:
  1. Boot from the Windows Vista Upgrade DVD and start the setup program.
  2. When prompted to enter your product key, DO NOT enter it. Click "Next" and proceed with setup. This will install Windows Vista as a 30-day trial.
  3. When prompted, select the edition of Vista which you have purchased and continue with setup.
  4. Once setup has been completed and you have been brought to the desktop for the first time, run the install program from within Windows Vista.
  5. This time, type in your product key when prompted.
  6. When asked whether to perform an Upgrade or Custom (advanced) install, choose Custom (advanced) to perform a clean install of Vista. Yes, this means that you will have to install Vista for a second time.
  7. Once setup has completed for the second time, you should be able to activate Windows Vista normally. You can also delete the Windows.old directory which contains information from the first Vista install.

The Secret Windows Vista Upgrade - Explained

There is a well known Windows Vista Upgrade secret in the IT community. In this article I talk about it and the possible legal implications! Please take this article "as-is" I provide no warranty of any kind by providing this information. Well to be honest it is no big secret as you can find this information anywhere online and many Microsoft staff must also know about it as they created this process! The "secret" is that the setup program (setup.exe) in Windows Vista's upgrade version will accept an installed copy of XP, W2K, or an un-activated copy of Vista itself as evidence of a previous installation.

...and it is this last option that enables you to perform a "clean install" of an upgrade version of Windows Vista to any formatted or unformatted hard drive! Basically you are installing Windows Vista twice to take advantage of this trick.

Is This Windows Vista Upgrade Secret Legal? Probably not. I am no legal expert but I am guessing this will violate some part of the Windows Vista EULA (End User Licence Agreement.) BUT Microsoft have created this process.... It is not something you have to try and crack in their software or run a third party application to perform this process... Their development team created it. Which kind of begs the question WHY?

No more digital product keys for Windows Anytime Upgrade users

Microsoft is making a tweak to the way it will enable Windows Vista users to upgrade to higher-end versions of Windows via its “Windows Anytime Upgrade” program.

Windows Anytime Upgrade is a program was a Vista marketing program via which Microsoft has allowed customers to move from lower-cost, less feature-rich versions of Vista to higher-end versions.

Starting February 20, Microsoft is planning to end distribution of digital product keys, company officials said on February 7. Instead, customers will need to obtain a Windows Anytime Upgrade kit, consisting of a Windows DVD and product keys, either directly from Microsoft, via snail-mail, or in person via a Microsoft retailer. Anytime Upgraders still can order the upgrade kit online, but the key will be sent by snail-mail.)
