Windows Live Messenger celebrates 10 years, hits 330m users

On July 22, 1999 Microsoft launched what would become the world's most popular instant messenging service, currently with over 330 active users every month. Previously named MSN Messenger, it was released to work on the Windows operating system platform for users to instantly chat over the Internet using Microsoft's .NET Messenger Service. Microsoft later re-branded MSN Messenger into Windows Live Messenger to merge it with its other Live services back in December 13, 2005. Windows Live Messenger (WLM) has gone through significant protocol changes and face lifts over its many versions in the last 10 years, ending up at Windows Live Messenger 2009 (designated to be called 9.0).

Windows Live Messenger 9.0 Beta Begins Today

Microsoft is expected to officially open the beta program for Windows Live Messenger 9.0 this afternoon (or early evening). Windows Live Messenger 9.0 is the next generation of Windows Live Messenger; this release is a "major" release and as such there will be no further interim builds for Windows Live Messenger. The beta program for Windows Live Messenger is by invitation only and those invitations were sent out last week on Tuesday - Wednesday (the 21st, and 22nd respectively). Currently the beta program has been limited to 5,000 testers and will later be expanded to a larger group.

As reported by several sites, the program was not put on hold at all due to the feature list being leaked over the holiday weekend, additionally, sites also reported that some testers had already gotten the build and that was just a rumor. Coincidentally, almost all of the sites that had posted the feature list for Windows Live Messenger had politely removed the list of features. Again, the beta program is expected to officially start this afternoon or early evening. We will be updating this post when the build is released on Microsoft’s Connect web site. We will share more information as it comes in and we will share as much information as we are allowed to by our non-disclosure agreement (NDA).

Microsoft integrates Windows Live into Vista

Microsoft-Watch reports that newer Windows Vista builds, 5506 and up, include references to Windows Live software by default in various locations throughout the OS. It is unknown yet if the concerned products are installed with Vista or if it only contains download links to it.

The Welcome Center in Vista is the place where most references are found. In build 5506, it contains icons for Windows Live Messenger, Windows Live OneCare, Windows Live Toolbar and Windows Live Desktop Mail. Additionnally, the Start Menu apparently contains a Windows Live Messenger icon.

Though this is only speculation, this may mean that Microsoft is finally removing Windows Messenger from its Windows products, using instead Windows Live Messenger.

Next Version of Windows Live Messenger

Microsoft has placed customer input at the top of the list of the features selection process for the next versions of Windows Live Messenger. And as such, the Live messenger users are invited to contribute to the evolution of the Microsoft instant messaging client. For this, a thread in the Windows Live Messenger newsgroup has been set up to catalyze discussions and voting on the ideas for 9.0, 10.0 and beyond.

"Please note that this is not a guarantee that these features will be worked on, but it's important for us to know your thoughts. Feature selection for Messenger takes into account many, many factors including customer input, business needs, available resources and level of effort estimates. It's a complicated process but one we know will ultimately produce the best possible Messenger we can build", informed Microsoft.

End of the line for MSN Web Messenger

Microsoft have announced that their veteran web-based messenger client will become unavailable from this Tuesday, June 30. The service has offered access to their popular instant messaging network through a web browser for the past five years. Since earlier this year a newer replacement service for MSN Web Messenger has been available as part of Windows Live Hotmail, featuring direct integration with the email interface and your contact list (known as Windows Live People). This will now become the only officially supported web-based client for accessing the Windows Live Messenger network, apart from the Windows Live Messenger Web Toolkit which allows developers to integrate messaging controls into their own websites.

Google Talk And Windows Live Messenger 9 Get Friendly

It seems all of the IM programs are finally realizing what users have known all along: There’s just too many of them.

Apparently Microsoft has succeeded in getting Live Messenger 9 (currently in private testing) to communicate with Google Talk, and they are working on integration with AIM and ICQ also. Seeing as how Live Messenger 8 already talks with Yahoo Messenger, we could be getting very close to a polished, officially released, messenger hub.

Messenger Group, developed with Windows Live Messenger platform, is a service for a group of Messenger users chatting together in real time. Maybe you think that Windows Live Messenger supports multi-conversation, but this multi-conversation is temporary, will be dismissed with the finish of conversation.

Compared with multi-conversation, Messenger Group is an existing group with each member in, members can talk together at any time without creating a temporary multi-conversation. Messenger Group makes a group of people connecting closer, no matter whether they are on your Messenger contact list. You can create a group for a team, a department or a company to chat online together.

Windows Live Messenger Screens Removed

Some members have expressed a deep concern about Neowin showcasing screenshots of Windows Live Messenger 9, they say it breaches the non disclosure agreement (NDA) they signed with Microsoft.

While this new version is most definitely not a state secret, and widely known on most if not all tech related websites (even as far as listing the new features), we have decided to pull the screenshots due to claims that the beta could be comprimised should it not remain low-key. I know that new software from Microsoft such as Live Messenger generates a lot of interest for those not lucky enough to be on the beta, but we reckon it's a good idea to wait until Microsoft formally announces the beta of Windows Live Messenger and makes it available to a wider audience.

So for now, good luck Live Messenger team and those who are testing it!

Update: I'd like to point out to avoid confusion that we were not contacted by Microsoft, I consulted an MS contact on this matter myself.
