The issue arose because the

24.10.2007An explanation of Windows Update automatic updating
The Microsoft Update team has
posted a statement addressing the current community
discussion on Windows Update's self-updating behavior. The upshot is that a longstanding procedure in Windows Update requires it to self-update
before it is able to recognize that new updates are available (note: WU does not conduct a self-update event each and every time it checks for
updates). This self-updating is done regardless of whether the user has enabled automatic checking, download and/or installation of updates. It does
so in an effort to avoid WU misleading the user to think s/he is up-to-date simply because s/he was not receiving notification that updates are
available. Put another way, WU cannot alert the user that there are security updates available if it is not in the necessary updated state that will
allow it to recognize those updates (see "
chicken and egg"
dilemma).
However, we do recognize that we should have been clearer in our explanation of this process earlier in the game; the
MU team's blog post is an effort to rectify that oversight.
In short, this is a poorly understood process, so I invite you to
take a look at the details in the MU blog post to learn more.
Questions on this behavior are best addressed directly to the team
via the MU blog.

14.09.2007Reboots force suspension of Vista SP1 updates
The reason it's called "beta testing" is to anticipate and isolate problems. But a big problem reported by some -- not all -- Vista SP1 testers is
causing Microsoft to take a step back.
The regular update cycle for testers of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 was suspended yesterday
afternoon, following multiple reports of downloaders discovering their automatically updating computers stuck in an endless cycle of reboots. This
would mark the second time in two months that pockets of testers reported such a problem.
The first wave of endless reboots was initially
reported on January 27 to Microsoft's forums. "Every time I start the computer it says: Configurating updates: stage 3 of 3 - 0% complete," reads
the initial post. "And then reboots, and reboots, and reboots...I had it rebooting for over an hour before I stopped the madness."

21.02.2008Microsoft Silently Rolls Out Anti-Hack Update For Vista

That's because Microsoft has surreptitiously released an anti-hack detection update

chose to manually select updates to be installed, you should find this update listed.

09.10.2008Giving up on Vista? Here's how to downgrade to XP
Microsoft's decision last week to delay the end of Windows XP sales five months means users have just that much longer to jilt Vista and return to
the older -- and some say more mature -- operating system. But even with XP's reprieve, few PCs come with anything but Vista. Even if you wanted to
take advantage of the wider window of XP opportunity, you might not know where to start.
For the rest of us, just what does it take to turn back the clock? Read on for more
about the trip to Windows yesteryear.
What is a downgrade? To Microsoft, "downgrade" describes the licensing rights it grants
to older operating systems. Downgrade doesn't mean the process for rolling back Windows from Vista to XP, since there isn't such a procedure, not in
the generally accepted use of "upgrade." In an older-to-newer move, developers usually make it possible to retain all the digital detritus on the
drive, from already-installed applications and Word documents to iTunes tracks and family photos, while updating the system files. Not so in a
downgrade.

Windows Update's Sneaky Updates Confirmed
This is a follow-up post to the Computerworld article.
My eWEEK Labs colleague Andrew Garcia has independently confirmed a report that will appear in tomorrow's Windows Secrets
newsletter: Windows Update is fetching and installing some updates without end users' consent.
Windows Secrets contacted eWEEK
and Microsoft Watch earlier this afternoon about the discovery. Tomorrow, Windows Secrets' Scott Dunn will report that Windows Update has started
"altering files on users' systems without displaying any dialog box to request permission. The only altered files that have been reported to date
are 18 small executables used by WU itself. Microsoft is patching these files silently, even if auto-updates have been disabled on a particular
PC."
The Windows Secrets story can be found here, on September 13.
The stealth updates do not appear to affect PCs using WSUS (Windows Server Update
Services) the same way as those using Microsoft Update/Windows Update. Typically, Windows would give some notification before installing updates and,
presumably, install nothing if Windows Update is turned off. But, in testing, Dunn found that Microsoft was updating Windows XP and Vista systems even
when automatic updating is turned off.
winbeta.org - 13.09.2007
Microsoft changes Windows files on user PCs without permission, researchers say
Microsoft Corp. has started updating files on computers running Windows XP and Vista, even when users have explicitly disabled the operating systems'
automatic update feature, researchers said today.
Scott Dunn, an editor at the "Windows Secrets" newsletter, said that nine files in XP and Vista -- but not the same files in each operating system -- have
been changed by Windows Update, the Microsoft update mechanism, without displaying the usual notification or permission dialog box. The files, said
Dunn, are related to the XP and Vista versions of Windows Update (WU) itself.
"We started hearing from readers that Windows was
modifying files in the middle of the night, even when Windows Update was turned off," Dunn said today. Some machines' event logs pinpointed Aug. 24
as the date when the invisible updates began, but on one of Dunn's personal machines, the log showed the changes taking place this week.

Windows Search 4.0 to Become Available on Windows Update
Since Windows Search 4.0 (WS4.0) was released to the web on
June 3rd, we've seen a good number of downloads, and a number of positive responses from customers who started using it. Users are telling us
that they're seeing better performance and reliability of search after WS4.0 is installed. As a result, we feel it's time to make WS4.0
available to the broader audience.
In late July WS4.0 will become available for installation off Windows Update. Customers
using Windows XP will see WS4.0 available as an Optional update, meaning they can manually install it from update.microsoft.com. Windows Vista customers will see the update as a
recommended update. Depending on the Windows Update settings on your Windows Vista SP1 client, WS4.0 may be installed automatically, updating
the search capability in Windows Vista SP1.
