Does Windows 7 reduce netbook battery life?

The vast majority of netbooks on the market today ship with Windows XP. And the nearly decade-old operating system runs pretty well on a machine with a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU and all the usual netbook specs like 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive. You know what else runs surprisingly well on these netbooks? Windows 7, the upcoming next-gen operating system from Microsoft. Theres just one catch: It looks like most netbooks may be optimized for Windows XP, and without the proper drivers some netbooks get dramatically worse battery life when running Windows 7.

SanDisk to launch new SSD range for netbooks

SanDisk have announced that they are launching a new range of Solid State Drives (SSDs) designed specifically for netbooks. The SanDisk pSSD-P2 and SanDisk pSSD-S2 SSDs, expected in February this year, will be available in capacities of 8, 16, 32 and 64GB – which, with the latter two, would allow for a full installation of Windows Vista (or any large operating system for that matter), something not possible on netbooks with smaller capacity SSDs. The new range is said to have improved performance for netbooks, at a lower cost. Unlike the previous range of netbook SSDs, the new range is to feature a SATA interface, following a change in design requirements.

Steven Sinofsky on Windows 7 and netbooks

Ars Technica: We got a chance to ask Steven Sinofsky some netbook questions that have been burning at our souls since we first had a look at Windows 7. For those that don't know, Sinofsky was the longtime Office head before moving over to the Windows group last year.

As a more recent development, Netbooks as a class of hardware didn't really exist during the Windows Vista development cycle. When netbooks do ship with Windows, the resource constraints generally force vendors into the old, wrinkly arms of XP. Sinofsky demonstrated Windows 7 on a netbook during the PDC day-2 keynote, and we were curious to find out more about it. Here's what Sinofsky had to say about the future of Windows on netbooks.

HP says its netbooks will likely run three versions of Windows 7

Netbooks: Just a Fad?

Were they just a fad? That may very well be the case according to Intel.

Stu Pann, vice president in the sales and marketing group at Intel had this to say.

"We originally thought Netbooks would be for emerging markets and younger kids, and there is some of that. It turns out the bulk of the Netbooks sold today are Western Europe, North America, and for people who just want to grab and go with a notebook.

We view the Netbook as mostly incremental to our total available market. If you've ever used a Netbook and used a 10-inch screen size--it's fine for an hour. It's not something you're going to use day in and day out."

So it seems that the original dream of having Netbooks to take with you on-the-go is a bust. Any heavy computer user will know that to get anything done over a long period of time, you certainly can't be using a 10" screen. So even if they increase the performance to unbelievable levels, they still won't exceed regular laptop sales, simply because of the way-too-small form factor.

AMD believes that Netbooks will be in and out just as fast as UMPCs were before them.

Great concepts aren't always s successful as they were planned to be. This seems to be the case with netbooks.

TechSpot: Acer Timeline 14" 4810T Notebook Review

With so many different factors to consider when purchasing a laptop, finding the right one can be a daunting task. Portability and battery life are the current trends, along with value of course, which has brought about the recent surge of netbooks. However as I've said before -- and I still stand by the statement -- netbooks are great for simple tasks, but lack the power to be more than a supplement to a real notebook or desktop system. Today we will be looking at the Acer Timeline 4810T notebook, a 14-inch ultra-portable that aims to bridge the gap between underpowered netbooks and bulky notebooks, while retaining the battery longevity found in the latest generation of netbooks.

MS wants to rename netbooks "low cost small notebook PC"

Microsoft has gone on record to say that the term "netbook" use should be restricted and the term "low cost small notebook PC" should be used in its place. The reasoning for the abandonment is because Microsoft sees that netbooks are only good for surfing the web and that there is little distinction between small cheap laptops and netbooks. The real reason for Microsoft wanting to rename the netbook type laptops is driven by its own definition of a "netbook". Microsoft will only license Windows 7 Starter to netbook products.

Windows 7 and netbooks - Where are we now

There has been lot going on with Windows 7 and that it can run on 'netbooks' - lightweight, low-cost laptops that typically use Intel's low-powered Atom processor and don't come with substantial amounts of RAM or powerful graphics processors. It all started when Steven Sinofksy, Windows Senior Vice President, showed off Windows 7 at the PDC, on his Lenovo S10 and said it used less than half of the netbook's 1GB of RAM. That was followed by Jerry Shen, CEO of Asus, announcing the plans to release versions of the Eee PC powered by Windows 7 in mid-2009, including a touch-screen version.
