Best Firefox extensions

When you ask most people what Web browser they use, the answer often will be Internet Explorer. After all, it comes preloaded on Windows PCs, so most people just use it by default.

But while IE maintains a stranglehold on the majority of computer systems, Mozilla's open-source solution, called Firefox, has made significant inroads into the browser market. Handy extra features are part of the reason for its growing success, as is the continual supply of third-party add-ons.

Verisign plugin brings green address bars to Firefox

Verisign has brought a new technology used to identify trusted Web sites to the Firefox browser.

The Internet services vendor has released a Firefox https://addons.mozilla.org/en- US/firefox/addon/4828>plugin that will show the same type of green address bar that is displayed by Internet Explorer 7 when it lands on certain highly trusted Web sites that use EV SSL (Extended Validation Secure Sockets Layer) certificates.

Companies like Verisign, Entrust, and Network Solutions have been issuing these certificates since late 2006, but browser makers have been slower to adopt them. They were adopted by Internet Explorer 7 in late January, and Firefox is expected to support the certificates in Firefox 3.0, expected late this year...

Opera Releases Firebug Alternative: Dragonfly

For web developers, and especially front-end coders, the Firefox extension Firebug by Facebook's Joe Hewitt is a killer app and major time saver. It lets you deconstruct the webpage currently loaded into Firefox to get a better idea of how HTML, CSS, and JavaScript needs to be modified to work properly (and it can even make changes to CSS on the fly).

Opera has just released a competing set of developer tools called Dragonfly. They will be automatically included in Opera 9.5 beta 2 and newer versions of the browser, and you will be able to enable them by going to "Tools> Advanced> Developer Tools".

WebChunks Now Available On Firefox Add-ons Web Site

Webchunks is a Firefox3 implementation of Microsoft Webslices (feature appeared with IE8). It allows you to "follow" an area of a web page through a dedicated feed bookmarked in a new toolbar. Clicking on the toolbar entry shows the information related to your choice in a popup, without the need to open a complete web page.

Should you follow information that can expire like eBay auctions, the style (bold or italic) of the toolbar's entry will reflect the status of your entry: new, expired, about to expire.
With the help of an extra extension, Greasemonkey, you can insert webchunks/webslices markup into any web page so the Webchunks extension handles it. This is something the Microsoft implementation cannot do, it entirely relies on the server's markup.

New tool enables loading of unsigned drivers in Vista

A new software tool has been released by Linchpin Labs that allows the loading of unsigned and legacy drivers on Windows XP, 2003, and most importantly Vista.

One of the system management and control methods that Microsoft implemented with Windows Vista is requiring system drivers to be digitally signed before they will load properly within the system. If a user or administrator wishes to load an unsigned or legacy driver, they will either need to reboot into a limited functionality mode or just do without the functions that the driver would have provided.

As others have pointed out, this step will do nothing to prevent malware authors from being able to load their drivers into the system. Either they will exploit the lax jurisdiction and corporate oversight of various countries to establish a corporate shell and gain legitimate digitally signed driver certification, or they will just exploit weaknesses in already-signed drivers.

Firefox 3.5 benchmarked, not as fast as Chrome

The results are in from benchmarks of Firefox 3.5, performed by ZDNet. The benchmarks test all the main browsers from Google Chrome 2.0.172.33, Safari 4, Firefox 3.5, Firefox 3.0.5, Opera 10 Alpha and Internet Explorer 8. Each browser was put through three tests including SunSpider javascript benchmark, V8 Benchmark Suite and finally the ACID 3 test. Firefox 3.5 was built for speed and performance, compared to previous versions of Firefox. Firefox 3.5 performed better than Firefox 3.0.5 and Internet Explorer 8 in all three categories. From the graphs, it is clear to see that Google Chrome performed the best overall, followed shortly by Safari 4 and then Firefox 3.5.

Firefox 3 Beta 4 review

Percy Cabello: Firefox 3 Beta 4 is about to be released (later today or tomorrow), as the twelfth milestone, in what already is the longest development time for a Firefox version since the initial Firefox 1.0 back in 2004.

Fortunately, Mozilla has not been shy to set as many milestones as needed, and given the many new features and tweaks Firefox 3 introduces, it seems anything but sensible, specially considering its not only about Firefox but Gecko, the web page rendering engine and the Mozilla platform as a whole which affects the many products based on it.
