15.12.2007Xbox 360 Software Update Improves HD DVD Sound Quality, Compatibility
Last week, the Xbox
360 received its Spring
Dashboard software, and today
the console gets a software
update for its HD DVD add-on
peripheral. The most notable
in this update are
improvements to the player’s
ability to decode audio
streams.
Prior to the update, the
Xbox 360 HD DVD player had
difficulties decoding Dolby
TrueHD audio, leading some
titles, such as Nine Inch
Nails: Beside You In Time and
Poseidon, to exhibit “static
popping” and “clipping”
during playback. The new
software resolved all such
audio issues.
While
the HD DVD player supports all
audio formats for the spec,
the Xbox 360 hardware itself
is unable to output the true
lossless Dolby TrueHD stream.
Instead, the Xbox 360
downsamples the lossless
stream into a lossy bitstream
that can be outputted via the
console’s optical toslink
connection. Added in the new
software update is a full
bitrate 1.5 Mbps DTS and WMA
Pro as an option for downmixed
audio output, along with the
previous 640 kbps Dolby
Digital 5.1 option...

10.5.6 disables the Pwnage tool, making you unable to jailbreak or unlock your iPhone or iPod Touch with Mac OSX. The update prevents jailbreaking by
disabling the software at the OS level. Apple is stopping 10.5.6 Mac's from recognizing the device in DFU (device firmware update) mode by using

This morning the first major
update for the 360 was
released and introduces more
than 125 features and
enhancements, including
background downloading and
improved DVD playback.
No longer will users

pass the time by playing a
game. Now up to six files can
be queued up for download, and
will do so without you even
knowing, allowing you to use
the 360 for something else
while you wait for the files.
If you happen to enter into
some online gaming the
downloads will be paused so
that you still get the best
possible online
experience.
Other updates of note
include improved Marketplace
menus so it's easier to find
what you want, custom
background music now continues
to play during game loads, and
DVD playback has been
improved.

06.06.2006Microsoft Windows Vista SP1 on MSDN & TechNet (Plus)
Microsoft sent out a mail on Wednesday informing MSDN and TechNet Plus users that Windows Vista SP1 images as well as Windows Server 2008 (RTM) have
been made available to subscribers. Upon checking however, I was unable to find the promised SP1 image on my TechNet subscription.
Microsoft
had last
week, backpedaled and decided to move the release for certain
customers and beta testers up from mid-March to
mid-to-late-February. I imagine some subscribers have yet to see it appear on their download list but should all go according to plan, those images
should be made available before March.
Up to 3 pre-requisites will start appearing through Windows Update for everyone else before
mid-March, which is required before SP1 can be installed on Windows Vista. This is due to an update of the update service from within Windows that is
required before SP1 can be installed.

InkSeine Update is Live
Matt Faulkner: The updated
version of InkSeine that I posted about last week is now live. The main reason for the update was because of a localization issue:
The worst symptom of this bug is that some users who use non-American ways to write decimal numbers or dates are unable to
load InkSeine notes that they have saved. The fix does NOT make it possible to load any files that this bug caused to be saved in the "bad" format,
but any new ones that you create going forward will not have this problem. The other symptoms of this bug are that Copy/Paste, Undo/Redo, and a few
other features will not work. Please accept our sincerest apologies if you have been stricken by this bug.
Even if
the localization issue doesn't effect you, there are still a few fixes included as well...

Windows Update failure after repairing from XP CD
Microsoft/Windows Update Program Manager Nate Clinton has just posted on an issue
we've learned of that affects some users of Windows Update repairing their systems using a Windows XP CD. The symptom is that some Windows XP
customers are unable to install updates via the latest version of Windows Update after using a Windows XP CD to perform the "Repair from CD"
function.
The issue does not look to be widespread and occurs in rather exceptional only under specific circumstances; it
occurs because the Windows XP Repair CD replaces all system files, including Windows Update, with older versions of those files. Meanwhile, the most
current version of Windows Update (which is already present on the system) includes a file that is not present in the Windows Update image on the
Repair CD. After performing the repair, the new file remains on the system and creates a registry mismatch, causing subsequent installation of some
updates to fail.
Luckily, there is a remedy: customers experiencing this issue can 1) refer to KB article 943144; 2) check Nate's post for work-around steps now; or, 3) contact Support using the telephone number(s) found at support.microsoft.com/security (usually found in the right-hand nav).

An Update For Windows Update
An infrastructure update has been planned for Windows Update client. The gradual roll-out of this update will begin in late July. This update will
occur automatically to any system configured to either receive updates “automatically” or “notify” customers that new updates
are available for download.
For enterprise customers who use Windows Server Update Services or Systems Management Server, all updating,
including the WU client, is controlled by the network administrators, who have authority over the download and install experience. Windows Vista
customers who select “never check for updates” in their WU settings will not receive this update until they manually install updates from
Windows Update.
In this particular update, there will not make any changes to the way WU looks or feels, instead the following have been
improved:
- The length of time it takes Windows Update to scan for updates
- The speed in which signature updates will be delivered
Detailed information on this is posted on the Microsoft Update blog.

Beginning next month Microsoft will start an upgrade to the Windows Update and Microsoft Update services. Microsoft plans to start the
infrastructure update in late August, claiming "it will take a couple of months to complete the rollout." The update is required to "maintain and
improve service quality, reliability, and operations." The update will simply improve the user interface for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008
computers running Windows Update, adding a more visible and detailed description of updates as well as improvements in how users are notified about
service packs. If you currently apply your updates automatically then this update will not modify the look and feel of Automatic Updates.
