Windows Vista comes in several different incarnations. But essentially there are two pathways -- the home user and the business user. However, at the very top of the pile is the Windows Vista SCU that gives you everything that is in both the top of the lines business editions and home editions -- Windows Vista Ultimate.

24.9.2008Microsoft Launches UltimatePC.com - Ultimate Extras?
Microsoft has provided an update for its Vista Ultimate plans.
UltimatePC.com is a new
website where Microsoft is hosting "blueprints" of the best PCs available and exactly what you can achieve with them. Although the domain name was
transferred
last October, Microsoft has only decided to make use of it now.
A small section of the site is "ultimate exclusives".
According to Microsoft these are not replacing Ultimate Extras. The reason given for the poor amount of extras is the high amount of testing and
quality required for them to ship. I would love to see Microsoft simply release powertoys like they did with XP. In Vista you are not even able to
right click a picture and resize it quickly without using 3rd party software. Extras like the XP powertoys are similar to what people expect.

Windows Vista Ultimate had an interesting feature touted by Microsoft before it's release, named Extras. This was intended to be an added extra
for the paying the hefty price of Ultimate, to give some bonuses to those who paid for it. Unfortunately, Microsoft didn't plan it very well, and
included very few with in the release of Vista Ultimate. This led Microsoft to publicy apologizing over the matter, and to this day not a great number
have been released. This led people to wonder about Windows 7 Ultimate. Would it feature Extras, or would Microsoft not worry about them this time
around?

07.02.2009Despite deadlines, Windows XP to be sold a few more years
June 30 of this year and Jan. 31, 2009, may be the deadlines for U.S. retailers and custom system builders, respectively, to sell Windows XP. But, due
to exceptions Microsoft has made, the operating system will be available for at least the next two years for those who purchased business and Ultimate
versions of Vista, as well as for customers in certain geographies.
Microsoft has made it widely known that it will stop
distributing XP to U.S. manufacturers and retailers on June 30, while custom system builders can put XP on hardware until Jan. 31, 2009. But what is
probably less known -- and not because Microsoft has been hiding the fact -- is that Windows XP Starter Edition, a scaled-down version of the OS for
emerging markets, will be available until June 30, 2010.
Moreover, business and end-users who have purchased Windows Vista
Business or Ultimate licenses either at retail or through enterprise agreements with Microsoft have indefinite "downgrade" rights to XP as part of
their license agreements, according to a Microsoft spokeswoman.

01.04.2008Microsoft releases XP mode RC for Windows 7
Microsoft has released updated bits of Windows XP Mode for Windows 7. XP Mode is a method to provide better compatibility in Windows 7, and to pull
it off with as little trouble as possible. It's also dubbed XPM, or formerly Virtual XP. XPM is built on the next generation Microsoft Virtual PC
7 product line, which requires processor-based virtualization support (Intel and AMD) to be present and enabled on the underlying PC, much like
Hyper-V, Microsoft's server-side virtualization platform. XP Mode will bring a Virtual PC-based environment, as well as a fully licensed version
of Windows XP SP3, free for all owners of Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate editions. XPM will provide 100% compatibility with Windows
XP.

04.08.2009OEMs to Continue Shipping XP
If you already own an XP license and are still hesitant to switch to Vista, Microsoft's "downgrade rights" policy, which initially began to be
exercised in 2001, may be in your favor if you would still like to purchase a machine running Windows XP after the June 30, 2008 deadline when
Microsoft will stop offering the operating system. OEMs such as Dell have said that they still have no plans to stop offering XP as an option:
"Dell has the ability to exercise 'Windows Vista downgrade rights' on your behalf in the factory if your business is still reliant upon
Windows XP and you'd prefer to have Windows XP Professional preinstalled on your PCs," according to their new downgrade policy section for XP.
"Downgrade Rights means that anyone with a Windows Vista Business or Windows Vista Ultimate operating system can downgrade to Windows XP
Professional provided they have the media for Windows XP Professional."

22.06.2009Virtual XP for Windows 7 Beta released to MSDN and TechNet
According to Paul Thurrott, a beta version of Virtual XP for Windows 7 has been released to MSDN and TechNet subscribers. The download comes in two
parts. The first is KB958559, an update for Windows 7 that includes Windows Virtual PC for Windows 7. The second, is another exe that installs the
Windows XP with SP3 virtual machine itself. To run Virtual XP Mode, users must be running Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate with
preferably 2GB of RAM with at least 256MB available to virtualization, and a processor that supports hardware virtualization. Many times hardware
virtualization needs to be enabled in the BIOS to be functional.

23.04.2008Official: Microsoft extends Windows XP's stay
Bowing to pressure from customers and computer makers, Microsoft plans to keep Windows XP around a little longer.
Large PC
manufacturers were slated to have to stop selling XP after January 31. However, they have successfully lobbied Microsoft to allow them to continue
selling PCs with all flavors of Windows XP preloaded until June 30, a further five months. Microsoft also plans to keep XP on retail shelves longer
and will allow computer makers in emerging markets to build machines with Windows XP Starter Edition until June 2010.
The move
indicates the continued demand for the older operating system, some nine months after Windows Vista hit store shelves.
In recent
weeks, several PC makers launched programs that allow new PC buyers to more easily "downgrade" their Vista Business and Vista Ultimate machines to
Windows XP. Fujitsu, which was among those lobbying for the change, has started including an XP restore disc in the box with all of its laptops
running Vista Business. ..

08.02.2008Microsoft set to release Vista Ultimate Extra games - free
Remember Vista Ultimate Extras? Well they are back according to Paul Thurrott, but this time they will be released for free in the form of two games,
Microsoft Tinker and Hold 'Em. Microsoft's failed Vista Ultimate Extras were a big promise from the company of "cutting-edge programs,
innovative services and unique publications." At least they were in Vista RTM, by the time Vista SP1 was rolled out nearly all references to Vista
Ultimate Extras were removed (shown below). Blogger Long Zheng called them the "ultimate con" at the time and in hindsight he was right. Microsoft
made several promises of more extras which resulted in the company launching UltimatePC.com which now redirects to the Vista home-page.

Microsoft has now extended the availability of Windows XP on new PCs by six months.
Computer makers that "downgrade" machines from
Windows Vista Business or Vista Ultimate to Windows XP Professional will be able to obtain media for the latter through the end of July 2009, a
Microsoft spokeswoman said Friday.
The new date is a change in policy. Previously, Microsoft had planned to halt XP Professional media

13.10.2008The Ultimate con
Long Zheng: Even if the
Windows Ultimate team has fled to the International Date Line,
summer is officially over. Normally I wouldnt care what season it is in the northern hemisphere but today it proves this team is incapable delivering
anything and should never be trusted again.
Two months ago, after weeks of
pressuring for answers, Microsofts Windows
Ultimate group director Barry Goffe
finally
spoke out about the missing Windows Vista Ultimate Extras. As implied throughout most marketing materials including the
official website and even Window
Vistas own control panel, Ultimate Extras were suppose to be frequent and free premium products and services delivered to the customers who wanted it
all. And the truth is, customers are getting near to nothing. Although realistically not everyones equally upset at the lack of extras, some argue it
wasnt part of their choice to buy Vista Ultimate, which is fine but that doesnt help the people who did.

23.09.2007Dell extends window for XP systems
Dell has extended the availability of systems preloaded with Windows XP, citing customer demand for the older operating system. The vendor started to
charge purchasers of certain lines to downgrade the operating system from Vista to XP last week.
However, Dell has said on its website that
XP machines will still be available in the Inspiron and XPS ranges. "We are able to offer the opportunity to purchase a Dell desktop with an OEM
Windows XP licence until 26 June at 5.59am central time," said the company. "After 26 June you have the option to purchase Windows Vista Business or
Windows Vista Ultimate with a downgrade service to Windows XP Professional.

24.06.2008The XP alternative for Vista PCs
While Microsoft is still pushing Vista hard, the company is quietly allowing PC makers to offer a "downgrade" option to buyers that get machines
with the new operating system but want to switch to Windows XP.
The program applies only to Windows Vista Business and Ultimate
versions, and it is up to PC makers to decide how, if at all, they want to make XP available. Fujitsu has been among the most aggressive, starting
last month to include an XP disc in the box with its laptops and tablets.
"That's going to help out small- and medium-size
businesses," Fujitsu marketing manager Brandon Farris told CNET News.com.
Hewlett-Packard also started a program in August for
many of its business models. "For business desktops, workstations and select business notebooks and tablet PCs, customers can configure their systems
to include the XP Pro restore disc for little or no charge," HP spokeswoman Tiffany Smith said in an e-mail. She said it was too soon to gauge how
high customer interest has been. "Since we've only been offering (it) for about a month, we don't really have anything to share on demand." ..

24.09.2008Microsoft to simplify downgrades from Vista to XP
Microsoft is simplifying the
processes via which its
PC-maker partners will be able
to provide "downgrade"
rights from Windows Vista to
Windows XP for their
customers.
Microsoft
will implement the first of
the policy changes for its
Gold Certified (top-tier) OEM
partners within the next
couple of weeks. The company
will streamline
downgrade-rights policies and
procedures for the broader
channel somewhat later, said
John Ball, general manager of
Microsofts U.S. Systems Group.
Under current
licensing terms, Microsoft
allows customers buying PCs
preloaded with Windows Vista
Ultimate and Vista Business to
roll back to Windows XP until
they are ready to make the
move to Vista. For OEMs, the
process via which these rights
can be activated has been
quite cumbersome, Ball
acknowledged...
