There's a bit of a public
relations tug of war currently
going on between BREIN and
Demonoid. BREIN is a Dutch
copyright protection firm
who's made a name for itself
by attempting to rid the
Netherlands of "illegal"
BitTorrent sites. Demonoid is
a private BitTorrent tracker
who has gained a significant
following over the last
several years. Caught in
between is LeaseWeb, a hosting
company that serves many
BitTorrent websites.
BREIN's latest victory
came last week when a Dutch
court ruled that LeaseWeb must
disable the BitTorrent site
Everlasting.nu and provide the
owner's personal details to
BREIN. Everlasting.nu wasn't
the only site BREIN wanted to
see disabled. As part of the
same complaint against
Everlasting.nut, three weeks
ago BREIN also demanded that
LeaseWeb disable Demonoid as
well.
Yesterday, it
appeared that BREIN had gotten
its way. Demonoid was off
line, and BREIN claimed
victory over another

Four out of eight
administrators of the Finnish
BitTorrent tracker
"Finreactor" have been
declared guilty in court and
have to pay damages totaling
60,000 dollars each.
The lawsuit against
Finreactor has just come to a
close. This is believed to be
only the first of many filed
against the site.
Three
of the four administrators
found guilty are under the age
of 18. It is unclear how they
are going to scrape together
enough money to pay their
fines.
With a
little help from Finland's
National Bureau of
Investigation
(Keskusrikospoliisi), the
Finnish equivalent of the RIAA
shut down Finreactor in late
2004. It was, at the time,
possibly the largest Finnish
BitTorrent tracker with more
than 37,000 registered
members.
The
Keskusrikospoliisi, after
getting the go-ahead from
Teosto, raided the
administrators' homes and
seized computers and hard
drives. The evidence they
found was condemning.

between Microsoft and Ubuntu:
Theres a rumour
circulating that Ubuntu is in
discussions with Microsoft
aimed at an agreement along
the lines they have concluded
recently with Linspire,
Xandros, Novell etc.
Unfortunately, some
speculation in the media
(thoroughly and elegantly
debunked in the blogosphere
but not before the damage was
done) posited that śUbuntu
might be nextť.
For
the record, let me state my
position, and I think this is
also roughly the position of
Canonical and the Ubuntu
Community Council though I
havent caucused with the CC on
this specifically.
We
have declined to discuss any
agreement with Microsoft under
the threat of unspecified
patent infringements...

17.06.2007Improved Windows interoperability in Ubuntu
A proposal has been created by Scott Richie, an Ubuntu MOTU, that Wine be included in the Main repository of Ubuntu. This does not mean the Wine would
be installed by default but instead that, on clicking an executable file, the user would be prompted if they want to install Wine. An automatic
install would follow, similar to what is already done for codecs in Ubuntu. The proposal comes after realising that only 37% of Ubuntu users had
installed Wine with only a third of these using it according to PopCon. Having previously been too unstable in its beta versions, Scott Richie
believes Wine is now mature enough for inclusion in the distribution.

has been sentenced to five

work he put in the private
BitTorrent tracker
Elitetorrents.
This
ruling
is the first BitTorrent
related conviction in the US.
Stanley pleaded guilty earlier
this year to "conspiracy to
commit copyright
infringement" and "criminal
copyright infringement". He
is one of the three defendants
in the Elitetorrents operation
better known as "Operation
D-Elite".
Operation
D-Elite (they love word
tricks) was orchestrated by
the FBI with a little help
from the MPAA in May 2005, and
resulted in the shutdown of
one of the largest private
BitTorrent trackers at that
time.

interface. It is suggested that it is possible for any websites to offload content to the btdna.exe, without the users consent.
BitTorrent DNA is used for p2p streaming of online videos. It works like this; the user who wants to watch a stream has to install the BitTorrent
DNA application, which is also bundled with the BitTorrent mainline client. When the user plays a BitTorrent accelerated stream it will not only
download data, but also upload it to other people who are watching the same stream, similar to a regular BitTorrent download.
