The Wait Is Over: Ubuntu 7.10 Is Here
As promised, Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) was released a few minutes ago, and it's my deepest pleasure to introduce you guys to the new features to be found in this version of Ubuntu (which is based on the GNOME desktop environment) and also to the features from Kubuntu (same as Ubuntu, but based on the popular KDE desktop environment).

own Mini 1000 Mi Edition. The new software reportedly sports a custom GUI that's geared more for media and connectivity applications than your usual
PC fare.
At boot-up, Mi users are greeted with a screen presenting a Web search engine; a list of favorite Web sites; shortcuts to their
music and photos; a settings manager; and a Start New Program button. If you click on the button, you'll get separate tabs for Internet, Media,
Utilities, Work, Play, and "All" applications. Because the OS is based on the Hardy Herring edition of Ubuntu, it should be able to run just
about any Ubuntu app...

A new version of one of the most popular Linux distributions, Ubuntu, is due in less than a month's time. The final stable version of Ubuntu 9.10
will be released on 29 October, according to their website. However, a beta for version 9.10 is available for those interested. The new version
features several changes, one of which is the use of the faster ext4 file system by default for new installations (although existing file systems will
not be upgraded). In addition, the latest version of GNOME, version 2.28, is included with the beta. The "look and feel" of booting the system has
also been improved.

Canonical, the developers behind Ubuntu Linux have release Intrepid Ibex, the successor to last spring's Hardy Heron release. Ibex isn't a
long-term support release - which might put off some large organizations - but for Ubuntu desktop fans, version 8.10 makes a worthwhile upgrade.
If you made the leap to Ubuntu 8.10 when it was released last week you may be scratching your head wondering what the fuss is about. The
answer is that it might be a few days before you appreciate the small tweaks and overall streamlining in this release. Naturally, there are a slew of
new and updated packages - GNOME 2.24, GIMP 2.6, and more - but much of what we love about 8.10 is more subtle.
That said, there are two
major changes likely to have an impact on almost all users - the updated NetworkManager app and the new X.org 0.7.

The PC vendor will ship the new Ubuntu Linux desktop on its PCs later this year.
Ubuntu 7.10 arrives Oct. 18, and not long after
that Dell will start shipping that version of the Ubuntu Linux desktop on its laptops and desktops.
"We will offer Ubuntu 7.10
preinstalled on our systems soon," said Anne Camden of
Dell corporate communications, in
an e-mail interview. "For customers who are interested in updating their existing Ubuntu systems, we advise them to visit the
Ubuntu 7.10 page on our wiki, which will go live
after the
official launch."
Dell isn't ready yet to give a shipping date. "As with any OS release, Dell needs to take the time to
qualify the final code on our systems for optimal interoperability," Camden said.

Ubuntu targets 10 second boot time for 2010 release
In an email to developers of the Linux distribution Ubuntu, Canonical's Scott James Remnant explained how they hope to achieve a 10 second boot
time with Ubuntu 10.04, the version to be released in 2010, after 9.10 is released this fall. The projected speed improvements come with changes to
the kernel, such as making the X.org server, which controls the display elements in Linux, load up quicker. The boot process will divided into
sections with time budgets: two seconds for Kernal and initramfs, Plumbing (drive loader), and X.org server; and four seconds for the desktop session
and other services. "This benchmark time is to a fully logged in desktop (auto-login) with an idle CPU and Disk.

Ubuntu 9.10 Off To A Great Performance Start
The first alpha release for Ubuntu
9.10 was made
available yesterday and while it does net yet integrate
Plymouth or any other new features, it has picked up a few new
packages. Most
prominently, Ubuntu 9.10 Alpha 1 features the Linux
2.6.30 kernel and GCC
4.4. There are also other updated packages
from Debian like GNOME
2.27, but most notable are the kernel and
compiler updates. We have tested
out Ubuntu 9.10 Alpha 1 and compared its performance to Ubuntu 9.04. While this is very early within the
Ubuntu 9.10 development cycle, the results already may come as a surprise.

Windows Vista Shutdown Fix
The Vista™ Operating system can experience delays during shutdown if running a managed service that was designed with a ServiceBase.OnShutdown
method that does not explicitly call the ServiceBase Stop() method on system shutdown. This update facilitates quicker system shutdown by explicitly
setting the service state to stopped after calling their OnShutdown, if the service has not already called the Stop() method.

Unfortunately, some
speculation in the media
(thoroughly and elegantly
debunked in the blogosphere
but not before the damage was

might be nextť.
For
the record, let me state my
position, and I think this is
also roughly the position of
Canonical and the Ubuntu
Community Council though I
havent caucused with the CC on
this specifically.

have declined to discuss any

Improved Windows interoperability in Ubuntu
A proposal has been created by Scott Richie, an Ubuntu MOTU, that Wine be included in the Main repository of Ubuntu. This does not mean the Wine would
be installed by default but instead that, on clicking an executable file, the user would be prompted if they want to install Wine. An automatic
install would follow, similar to what is already done for codecs in Ubuntu. The proposal comes after realising that only 37% of Ubuntu users had
installed Wine with only a third of these using it according to PopCon. Having previously been too unstable in its beta versions, Scott Richie
believes Wine is now mature enough for inclusion in the distribution.

Former Linspire CEO Switches to Ubuntu
The sincerest complement a Linux distribution can get is when the onetime CEO of a rival Linux company switches to that distribution. That's exactly
what happened when Kevin Carmony, former CEO of Linux desktop distributor Linspire, publicly announced that he's switched to Ubuntu.
Carmony, who left Linspire in late July, announced his switch to Ubuntu in the Ubuntu Forums on Oct. 17. In his note, Carmony wrote: "Now that
I'm no longer the CEO of Linspire, or under any obligation to use that particular distribution, I thought I should take some time and look around at
all the distributions and decide which one was right for me and my PC. In addition to already being quite familiar with Linspire and Freespire, I also
looked at Novell/SUSE, Red Hat/Fedora, PC Linux, Ubuntu, and Kubuntu."
His decision? "Well, after all my research, I have to
tell you, it was an easy choice. Ubuntu! I'm excited for the new release in a few days, which I will use to replace the
many Linux desktop and laptop PCs I own (five)."

it was a bit scary, with me wondering if my CPU would implode should I type the wrong command. The more I used Linux though, the more I learnt about

Next Ubuntu, 'Hardy Heron,' to get full support
The first version of Ubuntu scheduled for next year will be called Hardy Heron and will be the second of Canonical's Linux products to feature
long-term support.
Ubuntu Developer Jono Bacon posted news of the new version on a mailing list and his blog on Wednesday.
He invited interested people to submit feature
requests for the release at its Launchpad site. Canonical will hold an
Ubuntu Developer Summit in October 2007 in Cambridge, Mass., to hash out details and implementation plans, he added.
Ubuntu's
next update, Gutsy Gibbon, is due in October and will sport the version number 7.10, a reference to the year and month of its release. Following the
six-month release cycle, Hardy Heron, or 8.04, is scheduled for release in April 2008...

Linux Comparison: Fedora and conclusion
Fedora My first experience of Fedora came with Fedora 7, not long after I first used Ubuntu. I had difficulties getting it set up correctly,
especially when it came to downloading new applications, but once it was running the way I liked, I much preferred it to Ubuntu. My first impressions
of Fedora 10 are good, but there are some clear issues that need addressing, especially when it is put up against Ubuntu and openSUSE. Installation a
mixed experience. At first I didn't think I was going to be able to review Fedora. The LiveCD loaded to 100 percent within a few minutes, then sat
there, apparently doing nothing.

Ryan Paul: During OSCON last week, I met with Canonical's Pete Goodall to discuss the company's strategy for Ubuntu in the mobile market. Although
he could not tell me any specifics regarding plans for upcoming Ubuntu-based subnotebook products, the word is that good stuff is coming soon. He
seemed very enthusiastic about emerging opportunities for Ubuntu in the mobile space.
