Who wants or needs 64 bits?

It looks like the world isn't clamoring for 64-bit desktops just yet.

Nearly two and a half years have passed since 64-bit processors started going into PCs. But the software to take full advantage of these chips remains scarce, and customers aren't buying much of what's out there. The 64-bit chips provide greater performance than their older 32-bit counterparts, but that's because of speed upgrades and other architectural enhancements.

Microsoft and SanDisk Join Forces for USB Flash Drives

Microsoft Corp. and SanDisk® Corp. today announced they have signed an agreement to deliver a next-generation software and hardware solution to place application programs and personal customization on USB flash drives and flash memory cards, expanding on and replacing SanDisk's existing U3™ Smart Technology.

Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will develop a new software experience and SanDisk will develop new hardware capabilities, including the addition of TrustedFlash™ security technology. SanDisk will incorporate the combined software and hardware solution on removable flash memory cards and Cruzer® USB flash drives. The new offering is expected to be commercially available starting in the second half of 2008.

Effective immediately, Microsoft will engage in discussions with third-party hardware vendors interested in licensing the new software offering. A new entity will be created to license compatible hardware designs, TrustedFlash and other intellectual property from both Microsoft and SanDisk, with revenues to be shared by the two companies.

"SanDisk and U3 forged the category of smart USB devices, elevating simple flash storage to a whole new level of customer benefit," said Will Poole, corporate vice president of the Market Expansion Group at Microsoft. "We are excited to work with SanDisk on this next-generation experience, which will allow hardware manufacturers to better differentiate their products and provide an even richer software and services experience for customers."

"The U3 platform was established with the vision of giving customers a consistent and portable computing experience. The existing 20,000 U3 software developers that joined us show the potential for smart flash memory devices," said Yoram Cedar, executive vice president of the Mobile Business Unit and Corporate Engineering at SanDisk. "We expect this relationship with Microsoft will raise the overall experience for consumers given Microsoft's unique software expertise, and grow the momentum given the large community of third-party companies capable of utilizing Microsoft's technologies."

SanDisk to launch new SSD range for netbooks

SanDisk have announced that they are launching a new range of Solid State Drives (SSDs) designed specifically for netbooks. The SanDisk pSSD-P2 and SanDisk pSSD-S2 SSDs, expected in February this year, will be available in capacities of 8, 16, 32 and 64GB – which, with the latter two, would allow for a full installation of Windows Vista (or any large operating system for that matter), something not possible on netbooks with smaller capacity SSDs. The new range is said to have improved performance for netbooks, at a lower cost. Unlike the previous range of netbook SSDs, the new range is to feature a SATA interface, following a change in design requirements.

Samsung pursuing an aquisition of SanDisk

Samsung Electronics revealed, yesterday, that it has been conducting ongoing discussion with SanDisk Corporation regarding a possible purchase of SanDisk by Samsung. After 4 months of talks and no progress, Samsung has made public it's latest letter to the SanDisk board of directors in which the company reiterates the, what it feels to be, generous offer of $26 US per share. SanDisk's stock rests at $20.92 at market close, today.

In the letter, Samsung CEO and vice chairman, Yoon-Woo Lee, is very direct about his company's offer and the current state of SanDisk's market value. "SanDisk continues to cling to unrealistic expectations on both its standalone market value and an appropriate merger price," says Lee in his letter. He then goes on to address concerns SanDisk brought up in a previous letter to Samsung, "...your letter states that our proposed price does not 'reflect the intrinsic value of SanDisk’s business' and references the 52-week high. The world has changed dramatically in the past 52 weeks as can be seen from SanDisk’s own disappointing results."

Upon news of a possible purchase of the company by Samsung, SanDisk's shares rose $5.88 US.

Even in flash memory's historically weak performance with sequential data, SanDisk estimates 200MB per second reads and 140MB per second writes. That's about five times faster than a 7,200RPM hard drive, the company believes.
