U2 album leaks despite unprecedented secrecy campaign

U2's latest album, No Line on the Horizon, has joined the thousands of releases each year that find their way onto file-sharing sites before they make it to the shops--this despite an unprecedented secrecy campaign coordinated by the band's manager Paul McGuinness. McGuinness, who has recently blamed Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and everyone else who shares the "hippy values" of Silicon Valley for growing rich off of piracy, had hoped that he could spare U2's new album from a "premature" release. No advance copies of the CD were sent out to reviewers.

Microsoft to Provide Retrofit for Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel

Microsoft Corp. today announced that it is taking a precautionary measure and voluntarily providing customers with a free retrofit to the Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel.

The action is being taken after Microsoft was informed of a very small number of incidents of a malfunction in the Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel, in which a component in the wheel chassis may overheat and release smoke when the AC/DC power supply is used to energize the wheel. There have been no reported incidences of fire, personal injury or property damage resulting from the component failure in the wheel.

Owners of the Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel should stop using the AC/DC power supply until they have obtained their retrofit. They may continue to operate the wheel using battery power.

Owners of the Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel should visit http://www.xbox.com/support or call Microsoft at (800) 4MY-XBOX (469-9269) to register for the free retrofit and protect against the potential hazard described above. Instructions, if necessary, will be provided with the retrofit. Microsoft is notifying and will be coordinating its response activities with the relevant regulatory agencies such as the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. This may affect delivery dates.

RIAA chief: We don't see a need for mandatory ISP filtering

U2's manager might love the idea of legally-mandated filtering, but the head of the RIAA says that there's no need for such an approach in the US. The RIAA still wants to see a thousand filters bloom, of course, but it holds out hope for a "marketplace solution" to the issue. Cary Sherman, the RIAA chief, made his comments today at a Washington, DC tech conference where he expressed his differences with U2 manager Paul McGuinness. McGuinness generated applause in Cannes this week at a music industry event by calling for mandatory content filtering at the ISP level. "Paul is European," said Sherman, according to CNet, "and in Europe there has been much more of a regulatory approach to these issues."

Firefox: We caught Microsoft asleep at the wheel

Firefox has achieved what many thought impossible and overturned Microsoft's browser monopoly. This week the company announced that the browser had achieved 400 million downloads. We caught up with Tristan Nitot, president of Mozilla Europe, to find out why the open-source browser has been so successful and get the latest news on Firefox 3.

Firefox has just hit 400 million downloads. That's a significant milestone for the browser, why do you think there's been so much interest?

I think there was a huge need from people for a secure and accessible browser. Browsers hadn't been evolving for close to six years, but the web was. The browser had been dead while Microsoft was asleep at the wheel. Malware attacks and pop-ups became common and people got fed up with it.

When we started with Firefox, our 20% was not an affordable dream. We dreamed of making that. We are fighting so people have a choice: it's very important to have market share so that web developers don't design sites specifically for Internet Explorer. Developing a website for just one browser is stupid.
