US regulators are to crack down on bloggers who fail to disclose money or gifts received from companies when reviewing their products. In the new
policy from the Federal Trade Commission, offending bloggers could eventually face fines of up to $11,000 (£6,900) per violation, according
to the BBC. So-called payola schemes have increased in recent years, with marketers realising the potential of encouraging bloggers and forum
contributors to produce reviews or testimonials on their products in exchange for money of freebies. Although the guidelines released by the FTC are
not binding by law, they are interpretations of the law that hope to help advertisers comply with regulations, such as those on disclosing
endorsements.

The fact that Microsoft has relaxed its antipiracy mechanism built into Windows Vista concomitantly with the release of Service Pack 1 failed
to stop hackers from providing a crack for the latest version of Windows Genuine Advantage Validation. Various reports point out that Genuine
Advantage Validation and Notifications versions 1.7.69.1 (1.7.0069.1) and 1.7.69.2 released in March 2008, following the March 18 availability of
Windows Vista SP1 through Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center, have been cracked.
The workaround is designed to be integrated
with pirated copies of Windows XP and Windows Vista in order to render useless the WGA Validation mechanism. According to the reports, applying the
WGA crack will permit users of counterfeit versions of Windows to access and download items from Windows Update, Microsoft Download Center and
Microsoft Update. The pirated operating systems with the cracked WGA will pass all validations on Microsoft's websites and offer anything from
updates to applications that are restricted to users of genuine operating systems only.

Free utility condenses Windows Vista from 13GB to 1.4GB
A Croatian college student has created a utility that installs a seriously stripped-down Windows Vista, saying the heft of Microsoft's biggest
desktop OS was just too big to believe. "Who can justify a 15GB operating system?" asked Dino Nuhagic, a fifth-year student from Split, a Croatian
city on the Adriatic. Not Nuhagic, or the uncounted users who have turned to his creation, vLite.
vLite, a free program that lets users
pick and choose which Vista components, hotfixes, drivers and even language packs are installed, then builds a disk image that can be burned to a DVD
for unattended installation of the operating system.
"Why did I do it? Well, it's performance and work environment," said Nuhagic
when asked why he came up with vLite. "Performance, that's easy to explain. The less things running, the more responsive the OS. But the
environment part is where it gets down to personal preference."

Microscope-wielding boffins crack Tube smartcard
Security researchers say they've found a way to crack the encryption used to protect a widely-used smartcard in a matter of minutes, making it
possible for them to quickly and cheaply clone the cards that are used to secure office buildings and automate the collection of mass transportation
fares.
The attack works against the Mifare Classic, a wireless card made by Netherlands-based NXP Semiconductors. It is used by
transit operators in London, Boston and the Netherlands and by organizations in the public and private sectors to control access to sensitive areas,
according to Karsten Nohl, a PhD candidate at the University of Virginia and one of the cryptographers who discovered the weakness. NXP says it's
sold 1 billion to 2 billion of the cards.
