Blackberrys innovative touchscreen

RIM has finally decided to cast away their QWERTY keyboard origins that their phones had been named after, and replace it with a touchscreen version for the Blackberry Storm. Engadget has posted a review of the new Blackberry Storm that introduces this new innovative touchscreen. The screen is not only capacitive (multi-touch) like the iPhone, but also offers the ability to push in to the screen and create a 'click' action. This technology called SurePress and allows a user to hover over an item before performing a decisive click. A common problem with touchscreen smart phones was compatibility with existing web pages that use hover events to provide feedback.

Google has released another experimental feature from their Google Labs offerings, that allows you to turn an email into a Google Doc. Quite often we might have lengthy email conversations that become tougher to manage going through each conversation. With this new lab feature, you can turn a whole bunch of similar email conversations into a Google Document. You can turn on this new lab feature by going to the Gmail Labs tab under Settings, select Enable next to Create a document and hit Save Changes at the bottom. Here is a good example below from my own email.

Update: "Vista Capable" trial

The ongoing "Vista Capable" class-action lawsuit against Microsoft took an interesting turn the other day when an expert witness for the plaintiffs claimed that the Redmond company made more than $1.5 billion through their "Vista Capable" marketing campaign. The origins of the trial itself are to be found in the months prior to Vista's release when many computers were sold with Windows XP and the promise that they would be capable of running Vista. However, many of these PCs, which sold at a premium and bore the "Vista Capable" label, turned out to be only capable of running Vista Basic. Hence, Microsoft is being sued for what many would call false advertising.

Phase one: Capture one V4 has a new beta

James O'Neill: Hot on the heels of the announcement that Phase one and Microsoft had entered an alliance I got a mail to tell me about Capture one 4 beta 2. The web site has one of the most annoying bits of flash I've seen a while. There's a control to turn the cheesy music off but you can't do anything about the loud "tock" that's emitted when you hover over anything.

It looks like the UI has had a major re-vamp -which it puts me in mind of Adobe LightRoom (which I still haven't bought for myself). Functionally it hasn't changed much: but a nice feature is you can have multiple variants of the processing for the same RAW image. This means that you can keep a set of processing changes and try something different. It's able to straighten pictures now (why it wasn't before I don't know), and can handle DNG. But it still can't print as far as I can tell it has no answer for Lightroom's lovely back and white handling and split toning. Give me those things and and a clone / healing brush and I can work in a single program.

As WinXP Deadline Looms, OEMs Turn To Vista Downgrade Rights

Microsoft may be preparing to discontinue sales of Windows XP, but some OEMs have found a way to circumvent the software giant's June 30 deadline.

In yet another sign of the market's resistance to Windows Vista, Dell Computer, Hewlett Packard (NYSE:HPQ), and Sony on Wednesday all confirmed plans to exercise the downgrade rights Microsoft offers with OEM versions of Windows Vista Business and Vista Ultimate in order to continue offering XP-equipped PCs to their customers.

Downgrade rights, which Microsoft also offers to volume licensing customers, give users the ability to roll back to the previous version of the product they're using. Downgrade rights have existed since 2001 for Windows, but many Microsoft partners say they've been seeing a recent uptick in the number of customers exercising downgrade rights to roll Vista back to XP Professional.

Businesses having second thoughts about Vista

Fewer businesses are now planning to move to Windows Vista than seven months ago, according to a survey by patch management vendor PatchLink Corp., while more said they will either stick with the Windows they have, or turn to Linux or Mac OS X.

In a just-released poll of more than 250 of its clients, PatchLink noted that only 2% said they are already running Vista, while another 9% said they planned to roll out Vista in the next three months. A landslide majority, 87%, said they would stay with their existing version(s) of Windows.

Those numbers contrasted with a similar survey the Scottsdale, Ariz.-based vendor published in December 2006. At the time, 43% said they had plans to move to Vista while just 53% planned to keep what Windows they had.

Today's hesitation also runs counter to what companies thought they would do as of late last year. In PatchLink's December poll, 28% said they would deploy Vista within the first year of its release. But by the results of the latest survey, fewer than half as many -- just 11% -- will have opted for the next-generation operating system by Nov. 1. ..
