25.8.2008Microsoft: Trojans like USA, worms prefer Brazil!
Following the public release of Microsoft Security Essentials a few weeks ago, Microsoft has combed its data and released an interesting set of
results showing how different infections apply across the 19 countries in which the software is available. This is how the breakdown of threats fell
across those countries:- According to the data, trojans come up as the number one detection in the USA, worms affect Brazilians the most, and China
is mainly affected by potentially unwanted software threats. Breaking the results down into particular threat families, the Wimad trojans and
FakeXPA trojan are the top culprits when it comes to infection in the USA.

Security researchers have spotted Trojans that are using RSS feeds to communicate instead of their traditional method of "phoning home" to get

Yuval
Ben-Itzhak, chief technology officer for
Finjan, told eWEEK that the security firm recently
detected three separate Trojans using blogs of limited popularity to receive orders from botnet herders or to feed stolen information back to identity
thieves.
The lure of using legitimate sites such as blogs or social networking sites is that attackers can hide behind the
legitimacy of Web 2.0 brands such as Google or Yahoo, Ben-Itzhak said.

11.12.2007Microsoft Security Report: Trojan Horses Increase 300%
If your system gets hacked, chances are it will be from a Trojan. A Microsoft Security Intelligence report tabulated a 300 percent increase in the
number of Trojan downloaders and droppers the last half of 2007 -- a trend which security experts say will continue to exponentially grow. Consistent
with malware trends, the biggest security threats are moving to the Web and consequently experts say that they expect to see the number of Trojans
rise exponentially. The reason? Trojans are by far the most "financially interesting" malware, experts say.
"It's the path of least
resistance," said Doug Camplejohn, CEO and cofounder of security company Mi5. "For most enterprises, it's where they're least protected."
These Trojans allow attackers to install a small downloader onto unsuspecting users machines, usually without their consent, in order to record
passwords, credit card, bank account numbers and other personal identifying information.

10.04.2006Symantec: Out of the Box, Vista Prone to Legacy Threats
Symantec Security Response has
spent months throwing every
hack but the kitchen sink at
Microsoft's Vista operating
system, and on Feb. 28 it
released a series of papers
that showed just how bloodied
or victorious Vista remained.
The result: "There are
existing codes that can
survive Vista without being
modified-
keyloggers, worms, Trojans,
and spyware are able to
survive," said Symantec
Research Scientist Ollie
Whitehouse in an interview
with eWEEK.
The
current threat level of the
Vista security-resistant
malware is "relatively low,"
Whitehouse said, but he said
that out of box, Vista already
has several legacy threats.
"It won't take much for
to evolve," he said.
This is in spite of
Microsoft's years of work and
investments in new security
technologies, which Symantec
predicted will result in
"fewer instances of
widespread worms that target
core Windows operating system
vulnerabilities," researchers
wrote in one report,
"Microsoft Windows Vista and
Security."

Keylogging through the power cable
The BBC's Technology site has published an interesting story regarding computer security. However, what makes this piece of news a little
different is that it does not regard viruses, or trojans, yet instead an electrical footprint which remains on a circuit board every time a key is
typed. Security researchers have been investigating this phenomenon, and have discovered that poor shielding on some keyboard cables, can leak
potentially lucrative information regarding each typed character. This information is not logged via some program upon the computer being snooped,
instead the analysis is drawn to the information appearing onto power circuits, where it can be deciphered into readable material.

AV-Test Deems Windows Security Essentials "Very Good"
Microsoft's new free security software, Windows Security Essentials, passed a preliminary antivirus exam with flying
colors, said independent and trusted firm AV-Test, which tested Essentials, launched yesterday in beta, on Windows XP,
Vista and Windows 7. It put it up against nearly 3,200 common viruses, bot Trojans and worms, said Andreas Marx, one of the firm's managers. The
malware was culled from the most recent WildList, a list of threats actually actively attacking computers. 'All files were properly detected and
treated by the product,' Marx said in an e-mail. 'That's good, as several other scanners are still not able to detect and kill all of
these critters yet.' It also tested well on false positives.

Update: "Vista Capable" trial
The ongoing "Vista Capable" class-action lawsuit against Microsoft took an interesting turn the other day when an expert witness for the plaintiffs
claimed that the Redmond company made more than $1.5 billion through their "Vista Capable" marketing campaign. The origins of the trial itself
are to be found in the months prior to Vista's release when many computers were sold with Windows XP and the promise that they would be capable of
running Vista. However, many of these PCs, which sold at a premium and bore the "Vista Capable" label, turned out to be only capable of running
Vista Basic. Hence, Microsoft is being sued for what many would call false advertising.
