AMD launches second "Black Edition" processor

Following the Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Black Edition flagship processor, AMD has introduced a 5000+ mainstream version.

Compared to the regular 5000+ chip, the Black Edition comes with the same 2.6 GHz clock speed, 1 MB L2 cache and 65 watt power envelope, but includes a customizable clock multiplier that allows users to adjust the performance of the processor.

The processor is aims to attract the eyeballs of mainstream end-users, according to AMD.

The added feature comes at a slight premium: The 5000+ Black Edition has a tray price of $136, while the regular version lists for $125. Actual retail pricing of the new Black Edition CPU processor should follow recent AMD processor pricing trends and should be near the tray price: The 6400+, with a tray price of $251, hit the market for an average of $272 in the week of August 21, but recently fell to an average of $249, according to Pricegrabber.com. The regular 5000+ processor currently sells for an average of $113.

XP Pro to receive WGA similar to Vista SP1

Remember how everyone was excited about how Vista SP1 received a WGA update to not block you from your computer?

Well, the same is coming to Windows XP. (Professional only, though. Who would want to pirate XP Home?)

From the WGA Blog:

With this update to WGA Notifications in Windows XP, we've implemented a couple of related features that draw on the notifications experience we designed for Windows Vista SP1. After installing this version of WGA Notifications on a copy of Windows XP that fails the validation, most users will discover on their next logon that their desktop has changed to a plain black background from whatever was there previously (see below).

The desktop background can be reset to anything else in the usual ways, but every 60 minutes it will change back to the plain black background. This will continue to happen until that copy of Windows is genuine.

Also, the user will see the addition of what we call the "persistent desktop notification." This notification is similar to a watermark but works a bit differently. The image (see below) appears over the system tray and is non-interactive in the sense that you can't click on it or do anything to it.

As with previous releases, if a copy of Windows fails validation, notifications will appear above the system tray regularly - and we will continue to have the pre-logon message, the logon interrupt message and the messages that appear from the system tray.

AMD Barcelona Pricing Revealed

AMD schedules to launch two 2-way Opteron (Barcelona) server processors on September 10 this year, according to sources at server makers. The Opteron 2348 and 2350 will have core frequencies of 1.9GHz and 2.0GHz and will be priced at US$320 and US$390 in 1000-unit tray quantities, respectively.

In October, AMD will launch the 2.2GHz Opteron 2354 with 95W TDP and a price of US$610 in 1000-unit tray quantities, however this processor should actually appear in the channel later this month, noted the sources.

The Opteron 2300 series will include Opteron 2340, 2350, 2352, 2354, 2356, 2358 and 2360. Models at frequencies higher than 2.0GHz are expected to launch in the fourth quarter, according to an earlier announcement by AMD.

AMD also has plans to introduce the 8-way Opteron 8300 series which will include Opteron 8348, 8350, 8352, 8354 and 8356 models, added the sources.

AMD declined the opportunity to respond to this report, saying it cannot comment on unannounced products.

AMD lowers desktop CPU prices

AMD has adjusted prices for its desktop dual- and single-core processors a few weeks ahead of the introduction of its new Phenom dual- and quad-core processors. Also, there are two new 45 watt single-core CPUs in the manufacturers lineup.

The price reduction is less dramatic than the previous rounds, but drives the firms fastest desktop processors even deeper into the mainstream and entry-level segment, making room for the higher performing Phenom CPUs. AMDs dual-core desktop processors, excluding the $599 Quad FX-74, include 14 different CPUs ranging from $68 for the Athlon 64 X2 4000+ to $220 for the X2 6400+ Black Edition. In comparison, Intel offers 22 dual- and quad-core processors from $74 to $530 (not including four Extreme Edition CPUs).

We have compiled a chart of AMDs current Athlon 64 X2 processors below, which indicates that the retail market has already caught up with AMDs price reductions. Of the 10 currently available X2 processors, six models can be purchased for the tray price or less. Only the 6000+, 5200+ and 4200+, which has become a rare sight in the market, are selling above the tray price on average.

AMD's $1 quad-core processors can't resolve SNAFU in Shanghai

AMD is currently preparing its presentations for the companys annual stockholder meeting next week and we hear that the company will let us know that more than 1 million quad-core CPUs have been shipped. Not all of these processors, however, are sold for the official tray price. Some are going for as little as $1 a pop and in this particular, even that is not enough to keep certain customers happy.

Pricewatch: Desktop processor bargains?

It is no secret that the processor market is shifting: Demand for desktop processors has been declining for some time now while growing demand for notebook CPUs is the reason why there is still growth in the processor market. AMD and Intel have to adjust to a changing purchase behavior as consumers are looking for cheaper computers. TG Daily took a closer look at the current desktop CPU market and compared 1000-unit tray prices with retail prices to provide a better idea of current price pressures are and which CPUs may represent the best deals today.

Elevations Are Now Blocked in the User's Logon Path

Hi, Jim Hong, Program Manager on UAC, here again to tell you about a new change in the UAC user experience coming in RC1. Applications that start when the user logs on and that require elevation are now blocked in the logon path.

Without blocking applications from prompting for elevation in the user's logon path, both standard users and administrators would have to respond to a User Account Control dialog box on every log on . While this potentially becomes an annoyance for administrators, it is an unusable UI for standard users who cannot drive the UAC elevation prompt without having an administrator around to provide credentials. Furthermore, we advise users to be wary of prompts that appear without them taking an explicit action -- and prompts generated at startup go against that advice.

In RC1 and later, Windows Vista notifies the user if an application has been blocked by placing an icon in the system tray and providing a notification balloon during the startup sequence. See Fig. 1 for a visual of what this might look like:

Engineering Windows 7: Action Center

Steven Sinosfky: One of the big themes of Windows 7 from a design perspective (as you might have seen in Sams PDC session and certainly a topic we have talked about here) is making sure that you are in control of what is happening on your PC. This post, by senior program manager Sean Gilmour, is about notifications or the balloon popups that come from the system tray. In Vista we offered some controls over this area and in Windows 7 we have worked hard to make this an area that defaults to more well-behaved functionality and is also much more tunable to your needs. By improving how Windows itself uses the APIs and guidelines we want to encourage other ISVs to do the same. This topic is a great example of how the whole ecosystem comes into the picture as well and so we hope developers reading this will see the passion around the topic and the desire for software on Windows to take the steps necessary to honor the your intent.
