Native PDF support in Office Vista (12)
Today's another exciting day as we move closer to Beta 1. We are just wrapping up the MVP summit here in Redmond and we've finally announced another piece of functionality I've wanted to talk about for a long time now. This afternoon Steven Sinofsky announced to our MVPs that we will build in native support for the PDF format in Office "12".
I constantly get asked by customers if we can build in this support for publishing documents as PDF files, and now I can thankfully say "yes!" It's something we've been hearing about for years, and earlier in this project we decided that while there were already existing third party tools for doing this, we should do the work to build the functionality natively into the product.

25.04.2008Windows malfunctions after bloatware uninstalled from Toshiba laptop
These days, desktops and laptops from just about every manufacturer under the sun will ship with several bloatware titles like unwanted media or
security applications. Toshiba seems to place a bit of importance on the applications (useful or not) that ship with its computers, so important that
technical support blamed the owner of one laptop for the malfunction that occurred.
Most users are unhappy with the numerous
bloatware and trialware that ship with a new computer and removing those applications can be a time consuming process.
The Consumerist reports on one Toshiba owner that was in the process of removing those applications presumably from Windows
Vista, when the laptop experienced a blue screen of death (BSOD) error.

25.07.2007Vista: One Year Later
One year ago today,
Microsoft released Windows
Vista to manufacturing. In the obligatory anniversary post we ask: Was it ready? Will it ever be ready?
The answer to the
first question is an emphatic "no." Vista wasn't ready. Hardware manufacturers and software developers weren't ready for it. The channel and
enterprises weren't ready, and consumers couldn't get it because Vista missed holiday 2006.
Microsoft promised WOW, but the reaction was, "What?" What is
different from Windows XP? What is wrong with the hardware requirements? What is the difference between "
Capable" and "
Ready?" What is this
Software Assurance requirement for Vista
Enterprise? What happened to the familiarity of Windows XP? What is
wrong with my Vista applications and hardware?
More recently the "W" question is "When?"--as in
when will
Microsoft release Vista Service Pack 1?

admit that Toshiba is monitoring the market. "Toshiba will continue to study the market impact and the value proposition for consumers, particularly
in light of our recent price reductions on all HD DVD players."

15.02.2008Microsoft admits Windows Vista challenges
Microsoft South Africa has conceded there have been difficulties for resellers and end-users around the launch of its Vista operating system. It
states there have been problems with its communications to its channel.
Microsoft Windows business group lead Colin Erasmus says
these communications were not properly planned. It has three campaigns in the pipeline for this year to rectify the situation, he notes.
Local distributors, OEMs and resellers have been battling with bulk image blasting, the time and expense of downgrading unhappy customers
back to Windows XP, and second-line support.
Says Tarsus CEO Pierre Spies: śVista doesn't support bulk image blasting; it's
just not here yet. We believe the product was launched too soon.
a lot of catching up to do. Corporates are buying new machines with
Vista on and downgrading to XP, in anticipation of Vista being ready in the next two to three years. They are buying the licence, but do not plan to
use it until the product is ready.ť

Vista graphics drivers to be
more stable than XP drivers,
ATI says
San Francisco (CA) -
Graphics drivers developed for
Vista, Microsoft's next
generation operating system,
will be far more stable than
their Windows XP-based
counterparts, and not crash
the operating system anymore,
an executive of graphics chip
developer ATI told Tom's
Hardware
Guide.
Ben
Bar-Haim, vice president of
ATI's software division, told
us consumers will be able to
identify graphics cards
supporting Vista by way of a
"Vista ready" logo, which
will likely appear in multiple
flavors indicating different
feature levels. The release of
Microsoft's new operating
system may still be at least
one year out, but hardware
manufacturers, including ATI,
are already gearing up for yet
another certification and logo
round: "Vista ready" will be
the catch-phrase promoting
hardware products as a safe
investment.
ATI's
new Xpress 200 integrated
graphics processor (IGP) has
already claimed dibs on the
phrase. Its specifications
appear to meet Microsoft's
current minimum graphics
requirements, which include
support for DirectX 9 and at
least 64 Mb of graphics
memory. "Vista ready",
however, does not necessarily
mean that users will be able
to run all 3D effects.
According to Ben Bar-Haim,
vice president in ATI's
software division, there is a
good chance that there will be
at two "Vista ready" logos -
one covering "basic"
requirements and the other one
"full" feature capability.
Bar-Haim said that "two logos
is the concept right now,"
but the final marketing would
still depend on "further OEM
input." ..

Microsoft can't afford to support OEM Vista?
Microsoft might have
$7.6 billion in spare cash in
the bank, but when it comes to
supporting users who purchase
Vista on a new machine, the
software giant is all too
ready to cry poor.
Conventional wisdom
holds that if you feel the
urge to upgrade to Windows
Vista, buying it pre-installed
on a new machine is the best
way to go. The advantages are
allegedly twofold: there
should be fresh and functional
drivers for all the built-in
hardware, and you get OEM
pricing (much lower than the
retail $400-$700 price range)
for your new OS.
That
discount pricing comes with a
nasty twist, however. Because
you've purchased an OEM copy,
Microsoft won't extend to you
the courtesy of a 90-day
support period for Vista,
which it does offer to
customers who struggle through
the upgrade process on their
existing machines. Instead, it
will direct you straight back
to your hardware manufacturer...
