The State of Microsoft Beta Programs

Before I kick off this editorial let me just state that I am no big-time tester and I haven’t even participated in a Windows beta (yet), but I do have some knowledge about such beta programs, I have people who may be considered “big-time” testers that I regularly talk to, and at the moment I’m participating in both the Microsoft Office 2010 Technical Beta and the Office 2010 Technical Preview, which is really the catalyst for me writing this article.

Trojan, distributed over torrent, blocks torrent sites

A trojan named Troj/Qhost-AC, has been spotted on torrent sites labeled as a keygen for popular software. But in a strange surprise, the trojan would modify the users host file, rather than generating a key, changing popular torrent web sites like, The Pirate Bay, Suprbay (The Pirate Bay forum) and Mininova, the two most popular torrent sites on the internet to 127.0.0.1, making it impossible to visit these sites. The Trojan caused pop-ups on users screens and played a sound file saying "downloading is wrong". The Trojan didn't install any other spyware or malware onto the victims PC, other than blocking the three web sites, something that many users thought was strange.

Office 2010 Has Leaked!

The Technical Preview of Office 2010 has officially leaked! WZor.net uploaded a torrent a few hours ago for both the x86 and x64 versions of the new Office suite.

Without further ado, I present:

Microsoft Office 2010 (x86)

AND

Microsoft Office 2010 (x64)

The x64 torrent doesn't seem to be very active at the moment, but over time, as it gains more seeders, hopefully it will pick up. We were achieving speeds of up to 1000kbps during our download of the x86 version, so the torrent is going strong... That is, until the rest of the world picks up on it... Download quickly!

While you eagerly await the end of your download, check out a screenshot gallery from WZor as well (the version pictured in the screenshots is the x64 version).

Australia to test blocking all P2P and Bit Torrent traffic

Australia has been known to have high levels of censorship. It should come as no surprise to those in the land down under that the government is planning to filter P2P and Bit Torrent traffic in live pilot tests. Senator Conroy went on the record saying "technology that filters peer-to-peer and Bit Torrent traffic does exist and it is anticipated that the effectiveness of this will be tested in the live pilot trial". It is a drastic step to filter out all P2P and Bit Torrent traffic as it assumes that those channels are only used for piracy. One example of legitimate use is the popular online game World of Warcraft.

"txtor" tool circumvents basic torrent blockers

To the frustration of many students and other avid torrent downloaders, some universities and ISPs have been known to block the download of .torrent files in an effort to curb illegal file sharing. This quick and dirty method of filtering Internet content is usually done through the use of a proxy server that will look for a torrent mime-type in the file or, even simpler, the file extension itself. Although this method seems almost too simple to take seriously, enough admins have found it effective enough to justify its use.

That's why a group of developers launched txtor today, a site that makes it possible to download .torrent files as if they were text files. As the site explains, from the user perspective, the service functions very simply. Plug in the URL of a torrent file, and it's translated to a text file for you to download. For a moderately more technical explanation, the site merely takes the file and changes the mimetype and extension, then spits it back out at you as a text file in order to bypass proxy-level torrent file blocks. Then, all you need to do is change the file extension back from .txt to .torrent and open it up in your favorite torrent client. Based on our testing of txtor, we can say that the tool works exactly as advertised.

Controversy over new Pirate Bay Facebook feature

The Pirate Bay has added a small, but significant feature to their website which will almost certainly prove to be controversial. The new feature is a link provided on each torrent page which allows users to post the link to the particular torrent onto their Facebook profile. Friends can then begin to download the particular torrent straight from their Facebook page, assuming a torrent client is installed. Many websites allow their users to do the very same thing – even Neowin allows its users to submit news articles to Facebook; however the controversy lies in just what users will be sharing, with the use of this.

Steal This Film 2 hits File Sharing Networks

Steal This Film 1, which was downloaded nearly 3 million times, has now been succeeded officially (as the sequel premiered and was ironically leaked last month) by none other than Steal This Film 2. By producing this video, the League of Noble Peers, which features many prominent individuals from the BitTorrent community, has the goal of “ bringing new people into the leagues of those now prepared to think 'after intellectual property', think creatively about the future of distribution, production and creativity .” For those still confused, Steal This Film is a series documenting the movement against intellectual property. The films discuss piracy culture as well as raids against file sharing websites. In the spirit of piracy, the movie is completely free for download.

Microsoft honing its 'better together' story for Windows 7 and Office 14

Now that the Windows 7 Beta and Office 14 alpha are both out there, word is beginning to trickle out about some of the ways the two are being designed to "work better together."

Microsoft isn’t planning to integrate Win 7 and O14 to anywhere near the degree that it is integrating Windows Live and Win 7, sources say. But officials are looking for ways that users who buy both of these new products will be able to take advantage of how O14 “lights up” on Win 7.

Microsoft: Vista SP1 will break these programs

Microsoft has published a list of programs that will not work or that will suffer from reduced functionality after the installation of Vista Service Pack 1.

The list of programs consists mostly of security applications, such as Trend Micro Internet Security 2008. However, programs such as The New York Times Reader application also feature on the list. Users are advised to install updates from the application vendor to fix the problem.

"Windows Vista Service Pack 1 contains many security, reliability, and feature updates for Windows Vista," the company said. "A program may experience a loss of functionality after you install Windows Vista SP1. However, most programs will continue to work as expected after you install Windows Vista SP1."

Windows 7 leaks to Web, pirates downloading

Leaked copies of Windows 7 hit the Internet only hours after Microsoft Corp. handed out a preview build to developers last week, according to searches at several BitTorrent-tracking sites. The notorious Pirate Bay site, for example, first noted the 32-bit version of the upcoming operating system on Oct. 29, just one day after Microsoft unveiled Windows 7 to attendees at its Professional Developers Conference in Los Angeles. A 64-bit edition was posted the following day.

As of midday Sunday, with several copies of Windows 7 available, downloading was brisk. One 32-bit torrent listed on Pirate Bay showed more than 1,400 "seeders," the term for a computer that has a complete copy of the torrent file, and close to 5,300 "leechers," or computers that have downloaded only part of the complete torrent. The 32-bit torrent installs a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate, according to users commenting on the site.

Vista SP1 x86 appears on Torrent Sites

In the last few days, certain Neowin forum members have reported that an image of Vista SP1 x86 Final has leaked to torrent sites. This file is supposedly a slipstreamed image of the final Service Pack 1 for Vista x86. It is allegedly available in various languages, including English. Since many believe that this is indeed the download that Microsoft will provide in the upcoming weeks, I would like to emphasize that this is not the case. This release is not official, nor is it genuine. I repeat: Vista SP1 has not gone final.

Neowin members are reporting that the file in question may be SP1 Refresh 2 slipstreamed or simply a malware-filled release. I would like to remind our members not to post links to any Vista SP1 build, unless it comes directly from Microsoft’s servers.

Microsoft Early Adopters Programs - What's in it?

Many are familiar with the Microsoft Beta programs wherein users get access to pre-release products, such as Windows 7. But very little know the different programs Microsoft adopts in testing these pre-release products. Through Microsoft Early Adopters Programs(EAP), Microsoft connects with various customers and users, giving them access to their pre-release products and testing them. The EAP consists of three stages: Technical Adoption Program(TAP) Ascend - Beta 1 Releases Touchdown - Beta 2 Releases Image Courtesy:MSDN Technical Adoption Program(TAP) The TAP is available to very limited and select customers/partners by invitation only. The number of participants in the TAP would be very less and work closely with the Microsoft employees. They have access to almost every pre-release product.

Neowin Asks: Who can't upgrade to IE7?

As most Neowin visitors know by now, Windows Internet Explorer 7 was released this week. While there are probably a few of you who will not upgrade immediately because you use another browser (Firefox, Opera, etc) the question of the day is... are those, the people like you out there who cannot upgrade to IE7?

I can't, at least not at work. The private university I work for has multiple programs that simply will not function on systems with IE7 installed on them. As reflected in a letter sent our by my boss to our campus, "these vendors continue to work toward support, but it will likely be January or February of 2007 before that support becomes official."

While I in no way blame Microsoft for this -- these vendors, Cisco being among them, have had ample time to test the IE7 beta and RCs -- the fact of the matter is our organization cannot allow systems to be upgraded on our campus, even student machines (which require a school issued Cisco program to access our network, that program breaks with IE7.)

Are there programs that you or your company use that have forced you to stay at IE6? Please comment and share.

Nine Inch Nails Uploads New Album on Torrent Sites

Nine Inch Nails has just released the first volume of their new album “Ghosts” on BitTorrent sites as a free download. The band encourages its fans to share the album with friends, post it on websites and play it on podcasts

“Ghosts” is released under a non-commercial Creative Commons license and can be shared freely, something their fans weren’t allowed to do when the band was held back by a record label. In the release notes the band writes: “Now that we’re no longer constrained by a record label, we’ve decided to personally upload Ghosts I, the first of the four volumes, to various torrent sites, because we believe BitTorrent is a revolutionary digital distribution method, and we believe in finding ways to utilize new technologies instead of fighting them.”

This sounds is music to our ears, in more ways than one. For now, only the first volume has been uploaded onto BitTorrent sites, but the entire collection is available for download on the official website for only $5
