ThePirateBay owners may face prison time

ThePirateBay owners, Hans Fredrik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, Peter Sunde and Carl Lundströmare set to appear in court on Monday and could face two years in prison and a fine as high as $180,000 fine each. The four owners of the very popular public torrent web site face charges of copyright infringement. The servers are located out of Sweden and out of reach of law enforcement, meaning the site will likely stay online if the owners go behind bars. ThePirateBay is known for hosting torrent files linking users to movies, software, games and other types of copyright material that is illegal spread among users using P2P protocol and a BitTorrent client.

Trojan, distributed over torrent, blocks torrent sites

A trojan named Troj/Qhost-AC, has been spotted on torrent sites labeled as a keygen for popular software. But in a strange surprise, the trojan would modify the users host file, rather than generating a key, changing popular torrent web sites like, The Pirate Bay, Suprbay (The Pirate Bay forum) and Mininova, the two most popular torrent sites on the internet to 127.0.0.1, making it impossible to visit these sites. The Trojan caused pop-ups on users screens and played a sound file saying "downloading is wrong". The Trojan didn't install any other spyware or malware onto the victims PC, other than blocking the three web sites, something that many users thought was strange.

Office 2010 Has Leaked!

The Technical Preview of Office 2010 has officially leaked! WZor.net uploaded a torrent a few hours ago for both the x86 and x64 versions of the new Office suite.

Without further ado, I present:

Microsoft Office 2010 (x86)

AND

Microsoft Office 2010 (x64)

The x64 torrent doesn't seem to be very active at the moment, but over time, as it gains more seeders, hopefully it will pick up. We were achieving speeds of up to 1000kbps during our download of the x86 version, so the torrent is going strong... That is, until the rest of the world picks up on it... Download quickly!

While you eagerly await the end of your download, check out a screenshot gallery from WZor as well (the version pictured in the screenshots is the x64 version).

Australia to test blocking all P2P and Bit Torrent traffic

Australia has been known to have high levels of censorship. It should come as no surprise to those in the land down under that the government is planning to filter P2P and Bit Torrent traffic in live pilot tests. Senator Conroy went on the record saying "technology that filters peer-to-peer and Bit Torrent traffic does exist and it is anticipated that the effectiveness of this will be tested in the live pilot trial". It is a drastic step to filter out all P2P and Bit Torrent traffic as it assumes that those channels are only used for piracy. One example of legitimate use is the popular online game World of Warcraft.

"txtor" tool circumvents basic torrent blockers

To the frustration of many students and other avid torrent downloaders, some universities and ISPs have been known to block the download of .torrent files in an effort to curb illegal file sharing. This quick and dirty method of filtering Internet content is usually done through the use of a proxy server that will look for a torrent mime-type in the file or, even simpler, the file extension itself. Although this method seems almost too simple to take seriously, enough admins have found it effective enough to justify its use.

That's why a group of developers launched txtor today, a site that makes it possible to download .torrent files as if they were text files. As the site explains, from the user perspective, the service functions very simply. Plug in the URL of a torrent file, and it's translated to a text file for you to download. For a moderately more technical explanation, the site merely takes the file and changes the mimetype and extension, then spits it back out at you as a text file in order to bypass proxy-level torrent file blocks. Then, all you need to do is change the file extension back from .txt to .torrent and open it up in your favorite torrent client. Based on our testing of txtor, we can say that the tool works exactly as advertised.

Controversy over new Pirate Bay Facebook feature

The Pirate Bay has added a small, but significant feature to their website which will almost certainly prove to be controversial. The new feature is a link provided on each torrent page which allows users to post the link to the particular torrent onto their Facebook profile. Friends can then begin to download the particular torrent straight from their Facebook page, assuming a torrent client is installed. Many websites allow their users to do the very same thing – even Neowin allows its users to submit news articles to Facebook; however the controversy lies in just what users will be sharing, with the use of this.

Sweden targets The Pirate Bay

Sweden's public prosecutor Hakan Roswall plans to charge the Pirate Bay's organizers with accessory and conspiracy to break copyright law, which could lead to fines or up to two years in prison. The charges will be filed in a district court on January 31. The Motion Picture Association of America and the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry are among those who have called for action to shut down the site. No copyright material is stored on Pirate Bay's servers. The Pirate Bay only manages torrent files, which contain the information needed to download film or music files from others. That has not stopped copyright sentences before. As TPB grows, it is only a matter of time before they fall, and when they do, it will be a huge blow to piracy. But it won't be a deadly blow.

Steal This Film 2 hits File Sharing Networks

Steal This Film 1, which was downloaded nearly 3 million times, has now been succeeded officially (as the sequel premiered and was ironically leaked last month) by none other than Steal This Film 2. By producing this video, the League of Noble Peers, which features many prominent individuals from the BitTorrent community, has the goal of “ bringing new people into the leagues of those now prepared to think 'after intellectual property', think creatively about the future of distribution, production and creativity .” For those still confused, Steal This Film is a series documenting the movement against intellectual property. The films discuss piracy culture as well as raids against file sharing websites. In the spirit of piracy, the movie is completely free for download.

Anti-Piracy Lobby Urges Sweden To Take Down The Pirate Bay

Several anti-piracy lobbyist organizations have joined forces in urging the Swedish authorities to take “swift and decisive action” against The Pirate Bay. The Pirate Bay laughed away this attempt, and assures its users that they are not doing anything illegal according to Swedish law. Unlike less democratic countries, Sweden is not too keen on lobbyists who try to manipulate the actions of their government, something the MPAA did last year. Directly influencing Swedish authorities to intervene in this specific case, is considered illegal in Sweden (the term is “minister rule”).

The letter is signed by several copyright protection organizations, and was sent to the Swedish minister of communications. Noticeably upset they write: “We believe that, given the Pirate Bay’s cult popularity, this is a key opportunity for one country to educate the global internet community about the need for respect of copyright and the importance of intellectual property.”

Brokep from The Pirate Bay responded to this letter on his blog writing:”They seem to think that TPB is actually illegal and are very concerned about this! But I can reassure you, the site is not illegal so there’s no reason to be alarmed. It’s recognized worldwide as legal and helpful for the normal people around the globe that have something to share with each other. And we all do want to share!”

EFF sides with TorrentSpy in MPAA lawsuit

As expected, the Electronic Frontier Foundation plans to file a friends-of-the-court brief in support of TorrentSpy, the search engine accused of copyright violations.

The top motion-picture studios filed a lawsuit last year against TorrentSpy and other search engines that locate torrent files. The studios allege in their suit that these companies simplify the illegal sharing of copyright content.

The magistrate judge hearing the case recently ruled that computer RAM or random-access memory, is a tangible document that can be stored and must be turned over in a lawsuit. If allowed to stand, the groundbreaking decision may mean that anyone defending themselves in a civil suit could be required to turn over information in their computer's RAM hardware. This could force companies and individuals to store vast amounts of data, say technology experts. ..

First Russian BitTorrent User Sentenced

With rampant piracy across much of Russia, one could be forgiven for thinking they don’t care about copyright there. That assertion is now up for debate as the first BitTorrent user in Russia is sentenced for illegally distributing software, with anti-copyright activists calling for people to jump on a torrent in protest. According to a report from rusya.ru, a man has made history by becoming the first person in Russia to be convicted for using BitTorrent to infringe copyright. Sergei Avramov appeared in court in the city of Rostov-on-Don, accused of the illegal distribution of pirated software. Despite his actions being strictly not-for-profit, he was found guilty and received a 12 month suspended sentence.

Pirate Bay Owners hit with legal action

In yet another stage of the ongoing legal saga between the film and music industries, the four owners of the popular torrent search engine have been hit with another lawsuit for "Conspiracy to break copyright law". This suit directly targets the four owners, instead of the site itself, which hosts none of the content, but links to .torrent files that allow users to download the content.

Co-founder Peter Sunde, and three others could face up to two years in prison and a fine of 1.2 million kronor if convicted in this case. Many attempts have been made previously by the industry to take down The Pirate Bay, but each has been defeated by the loose copyright laws that exist in Sweden. We can only wait to see how this latest attempt to take down this giant of P2P bittorrent sharing pans out. Will it succeed at last, or be beaten down again?

Open Letter to Microsoft and the Community

Chris Holmes: I decided to write this letter with the help of various others in the community who agree with my assessment of current things relating to Windows 7 and the way it is being handled. Enjoy the letter, I think we make a LOT of good points that need to be considered.

The growing number of atrocities committed by Steven Sinofsky as the Senior Vice President of the Windows group has been mounting week by week. Recently, I think we saw the effect of this boil over. But first, before we get into that, I think we need to examine who he is and what he has done.

TorrentSpy, isoHunt to filter copyrighted content

It is being reported that isoHunt, another US-based torrent search engine that has been battling against the movie industry for some time, also plans to use the hash-based system to filter pirated content from its search results. With FileRights, studios need to submit the file's name and hash code to automate the takedown process, however, hash codes can be altered and files renamed, so the outcome of this filtering tool remains to be seen.

The popular public torrent tracker TorrentSpy, currently in the middle of a legal battle against copyright owners, has decided to give in and start showing some level of good faith in the fight against piracy by adding a content filtering tool called FileRights.

Pressure is building on TorrentSpy after a judge recently ordered the search engine to log user activity to be handed as evidence. The company stated that it doesnt keep any logs and therefore cannot produce any, but a judge has ruled that the necessary information is already stored temporarily in server RAM and they just need to record it. TorrentSpy is still fighting this ruling with the help of the EFF and the Center for Democracy & Technology. However, they appear to have abandoned the fight over filtering, hoping to prove to the courts that they have no desire to incite infringement...

Windows 7 leaks to Web, pirates downloading

Leaked copies of Windows 7 hit the Internet only hours after Microsoft Corp. handed out a preview build to developers last week, according to searches at several BitTorrent-tracking sites. The notorious Pirate Bay site, for example, first noted the 32-bit version of the upcoming operating system on Oct. 29, just one day after Microsoft unveiled Windows 7 to attendees at its Professional Developers Conference in Los Angeles. A 64-bit edition was posted the following day.

As of midday Sunday, with several copies of Windows 7 available, downloading was brisk. One 32-bit torrent listed on Pirate Bay showed more than 1,400 "seeders," the term for a computer that has a complete copy of the torrent file, and close to 5,300 "leechers," or computers that have downloaded only part of the complete torrent. The 32-bit torrent installs a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate, according to users commenting on the site.
