Study: Largest vendors account for fewer software flaws

Though it might not seem that way, the top 10 most vulnerable software vendors -- and, yes, that includes Microsoft Corp. -- are contributing a smaller percentage of all vulnerability disclosures per year compared to five years ago.

That's according to an analysis by Gunter Ollmann, director of security strategies at IBM's Internet Security Systems X-Force team.

Ollmann, who crunched vulnerability data gathered by X-Force between 2002 and 2006, said the overall percentage of security flaws disclosed by the most vulnerable software vendors dropped from 20.2% in 2002 to 14.6% during that period.

Much of that decrease is likely the result of improved quality assurance and testing processes by the most vulnerable software vendors, Ollmann said. Most of their software packages have been through multiple versions and have been combed thoroughly for vulnerabilities by security researchers, Ollmann said...

SANS Warns of Attack Shift to Apps, Network Devices

An increase in the number of holes in software applications and network devices like routers and switches is allowing malicious hackers to gain access to sensitive systems, including government and military systems, according to the SANS Institute.

SANS warned of the switch to attacks on applications and network devices in its annual publication of the Top 20 vulnerabilities on Tuesday. Critical holes in computer backup and antivirus applications, as well as switch and router platforms, are enabling a new wave of attacks that is shifting attention from holes in operating systems like Microsoft Corp.'s Windows, Web and e-mail servers, SANS said. Software vulnerability scanning and better patching are the best way to address the holes, SANS said.

The annual SANS Top 20 highlights holes in software programs that are considered the most serious for security professionals. As in past years, the SANS Top 20 contains warnings about security holes in Windows and popular Internet applications like the Internet Explorer Web browser and Outlook Express e-mail program...

Gartner: Antivirus is biggest security expense

Spending on security software across Europe is expected to top 2.4 billion euros ($3.3 billion) this year, with antivirus software continuing to form the largest slice of the pie.

Antivirus software will account for more than 50 percent of the total security software revenue market in 2007, according to the calculations by analyst Gartner.

Organizations are getting more sophisticated in the way they choose security products, and technical evaluations are now common practice, the analyst said. Customers also want to deal with a smaller number of vendors that can supply products that work well together.

Gartner principal research analyst Ruggero Contu said that traditionally, the security software market has been dominated by "best-of-needs" vendors, but the market is now starting to see a gradual consolidation around fewer players.

However, Contu added that security is becoming more complex and difficult for a single vendor to handle. "Customers require products that integrate with their security architecture rather than disconnected-point solutions," he said in a statement.

Microsoft betting on secure development metamorphosis

Back in 2002, Microsoft executives realized they had a serious problem at hand. As the primary target of a growing global community of amateur hackers and professional cybercriminals, Microsoft knew it had to do something to improve the security of its code or it was likely to become a party pooper at the online fiesta. The Bill Gates Trustworthy Computing e-mail of January 2002 got lots of PR focus, but Microsoft's real security work horse was a new development process called the Security Development Lifecycle (SDL).

Web apps, Office among top security headaches, says SANS

Web-based applications and security holes in Microsoft Office are among the biggest threats faced by Internet users today, according to the SANS Institute's annual security report.

Developers aren't using secure coding techniques to create Web applications, giving hackers an opportunity to tap the rich databases of information connected to them, according to SANS, a computer training and security organization.

The report, which will be discussed in depth in London Wednesday, compiles information on security threats from governments, security companies, and academics.

Ants inspire new generation of security software

The way ants behave when their colony is under threat is the inspiration behind a new generation of network security software, which has been successfully deployed by security experts. By mimicking the behaviour of real ants, security experts hope this method will defeat computer worms faster than conventional security software. Glenn Fink, a research scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Washington, came up with the idea. In the natural world ants wonder about randomly, returning to the colony when they find a threat or food. On the way back, they leave a trail of pheromones. As other ants find the trail, they follow it and reinforce it.

ISPs: Botnets And DoS Attacks Top List of Fears

Botnets and distributed denial-of-service attacks are the biggest security concerns for Internet service providers, according to a new study.

Arbor Networks, a network security company, and the University of Michigan released the results of the third annual Worldwide Infrastructure Security Report this week. After surveying 70 ISPs on the security issues facing Internet backbone operators, the team reported that 73% of Tier One and Tier Two ISPs and cable operators think they're doing a good job battling the bad guys.

However, the battles keep changing.

This year, the ISPs report that their top security concern is dealing with the growing number of botnets that are buffeting the Internet with spam, phishing attacks, and denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. And the ISPs aren't allow in their fears. According to the FBI, because of their widely distributed capabilities, the government considers botnets a growing threat to national security, the national information infrastructure, and the economy. ..

Set-top shakeup is in the cards

A new Federal Communications Commission rule that requires cable operators to change the hardware in their set-top boxes has finally gone into effect, but few industry experts believe it will do much good for consumers or jump-start competition.

As of Sunday, cable operators must provide new TV subscribers with set-top boxes that have a slot for a special PC card known as a CableCard. This card contains decryption mechanisms that determine if a user is allowed to view the video content coming from the cable operator.

In the past this security, which provided conditional access, was integrated into set-top boxes that people leased from their cable operators. But now, due to the new FCC rule, that security mechanism will reside on a separate card that fits into a slot on the set-top box.

Symantec: Fake security software on millions of computers

Millions of computer in the US are infected with fake security software, which their owners may have even paid for, according to a cybercrime report from security company Symantec. Such software would only make computers more vulnerable, possibly allowing cybercrooks to take complete control of an infected computer. "Lots of times, in fact they're a conduit for attackers to take over your machine. They'll take your credit card information, any personal information you've entered there and they've got your machine," said Vincent Weafer, Symantec's vice president for security response. Symantec found 250 different kinds of fake security software installed on computers, all with perfectly legitimate sounding names such as "Antivirus 2010" and "SpywareGuard 2008".

Is security software becoming a security risk?

Is the software we're using to protect ourselves from online attacks becoming a liability?

That's what Thierry Zoller believes. For the past two years, the security engineer for n.runs AG has taken a close look at the way antivirus software inspects e-mail traffic, and he thinks companies that try to improve security by checking data with more than one antivirus engine may actually be making things worse. Why? Because bugs in the "parser" software used to examine different file formats can easily be exploited by attackers, so increasing your use of antivirus software increases the chances that you could be successfully attacked.

Antivirus software must open and inspect data in hundreds, if not thousands, of file formats. One bug in the software that does this can lead to a serious security breach.

Zoller and his colleague Sergio Alvarez have been looking into this issue for the past two years, and they've found more than 80 parser bugs in antivirus software, most of which have not yet been patched.

Top 25 common coding errors that brought down websites

The United States National Security Agency (NSA) has released a list of the top 25 coding errors that have landed coders and webmasters into hot water. The SANS institute located in Maryland reported that "1.5 million websites were breached" because of two types of coding errors that are on the list. These errors are so malicious and commonly made that the NSA, the Department of Homeland Security, Microsoft, Symantec and many more published a list, a first of its kind, to help out developers as they are coding. The list is hoped to help those coders and upcoming coders from making the mistakes that veteran coders learned the hard way.

The top 10 reasons Web sites get hacked

Web security is at the top of customers' minds after many well-publicized personal data breaches, but the people who actually build Web applications aren't paying much attention to security, experts say.

"They're totally ignoring it," says IT consultant Joel Snyder. "When you go to your Web site design team, what you're looking for is people who are creative and able to build these interesting Web sites... That's No. 1, and No. 9 on the list would be that it's a secure Web site."

The biggest problem is designers aren't building walls within Web applications to partition and validate data moving between parts of the system, he says.

Security is usually something that's considered after a site is built rather than before it is designed, agrees Khalid Kark, senior analyst at Forrester.
