Vista Industrial Design Toolkit

Microsoft is trying to encourage PC makers to spice up their PCs with the Vista Industrial Design Toolkit. The kit has been shipped out to about 70 designers in hopes of giving the PC world a facelift. I?m not sure about you but I think Microsoft might be on to something here. Bland, boring boxes just don?t cut it anymore.

The Windows Vista Industrial Design Toolkit, hand-delivered to about 70 designers, contains everything a PC maker needs?color palette, suggested materials, even graphics for icons and power buttons?to create computers, laptops, and peripherals that hew to Vista's look. A separate booklet exhorts hardware makers to eschew drab, utilitarian boxes.

New iPhone patents, object identification and more

Apple has filed new patents today for its iPhone. Some of the items in the new patents include real world object identification, face detection and recognition, text messaging filtering, smart text messages and voice changer. The patents filed today may not be seen for awhile, possibly in the next 4.0 upgrade or in the next iPhone, something we could see next June or July, if the pattern of iPhone releases stay true. Real world object identification will let users take video or snap shots of places around the world, for example The Pentagon, and then the phone would check a database of similar photos and give detailed information about the landmark.

Game-changer: Asus Eee PC a win for Intel and Linux, at Microsoft's expense

A little over a week ago, reviews of Asus's Eee PC 701 started to trickle out onto the Internet. Some of the larger publications, like CNet and LAPTOP Magazine got their hands on the unit first, but as it has become more widely available sites like HotHardware and PC Perspective have now put out their own reviews of the Eee PC.

The overall verdict is fairly unanimous: the device's keyboard is a bit cramped, but in terms of price, performance, and features the Eee PC hits the trifecta. Indeed, Asus appears to have gotten so many things right with the Eee PC that it could be a game-changer in the mobile market, in terms of both hardware and software. Instead of rehashing the reviews, which you can read on your own, let me draw a few lessons from the Eee PC launch that I think are important for the mobile space going into 2008.

PowerPoint Prototyping Toolkit (release 0.1)

Long Zheng: After hearing about the impact and success it had in Microsoft, I couldnt wait to get my hands on prototyping in PowerPoint 2007. Amongst a few things Manuel Clement suggested a few weeks ago in his presentation about świreframe prototyping with Office PowerPoint 2007ł, was to create a toolkit of commonly used GUI components to copy and paste when designing the prototype screens. Thats what I set out to build.

My vision for a toolkit is to contain a set of all the possible and feasible GUI components you could otherwise use in designing a real Windows application or browser application. For example, it should include buttons, drop-down lists, window frames, toolbars, dialog boxes and address bars. Of course there are probably as many of those as there are stars, so Ill just have to focus on the most commonly used ones.

Partners helping fix Vista Software Compatibility Issues

James Senior: When chatting with people about the deployment of Windows Vista within their organisation, one of the topics that comes up is software compatibility. It's a no brainer that their business applications continue to work whilst they are enjoying the benefits and features of Windows Vista. Microsoft have worked hard to ensure we had a large number of software vendors ready to offer their software as "Certified for Windows Vista" or "Works with Windows Vista". These certifications mean that either software is designed specifically to take advantage of new features in Windows Vista or is compatible with Windows Vista.

Whilst these certifications go along way to answer questions about software compatibility, there are still bespoke software solutions or legacy applications that might not have been tested by Microsoft to gain the certification. For businesses in this situation there are a range of tools that will help test the compatibility of applications on Windows Vista. Microsoft provide a great toolset, for instance, called the Application Compatibility Toolkit which is worth checking out for the analysis of your software portfolio.

Microsoft to provide Facebook-Toolkit-like add-on for Windows Live developers

Microsoft is planning on fielding in November a set of new tools that will support Windows Live developers.

The forthcoming Windows Live toolbox kit will include add-on tools that will work with Visual Studio 2008, the Expression family of designer tools and the Express hobbyist tools. the first deliverable will support Visual Studio 2008 and possibly also Visual Studio 2005.

Microsoft is planning to officially roll out the Visual studio Toolkit for Windows Live simultaneously at the Dev Connections show in Las Vegas and TechEd Europe. (My bet is the rollout will be of a beta of the toolkit, though I dont know this for sure.)

LiveSide.Net obtained some preliminary details about the new toolkit during the recent Mix UK conference. Microsoft execs told LiveSide that the new tools are going to look and work a lot like the Facebook Developer Toolkit that Microsoft announced in May 2007. In fact, the new Visual Studio Toolkit for Windows Live is being developed by Microsofts Doug Handler, who did a lot of the work on the Facebook toolkit in terms of using a drag-drop-to-canvas model, the Softies told LiveSide.)
