Is Microsoft getting ready to attack Linux and open-source software with its patents?
Florian Mueller, spokesman for the European NoSoftwarePatents.com and a leading anti-patent activist, thinks that may be the case. Mueller sees a recent Forbes interview with Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer as stopping just " short announcing patent litigation against Linux."

After the widespread Gmail outage yesterday users were hit by a phishing attack over the Gtalk chat client. "The malicious message spread via the
Google Talk instant messaging chat system, urging users to a video by clicking on a link connected via the TinyURL service. The link points to a
website called ViddyHo, which invited users to submit their Gmail usernames and passwords." When users entered their credentials the information
would be logged and the email account would be compromised. If you think you may have been subjected to this attack it is advised you change your

06.06.2007Storm Worm Erupts Into Worst Virus Attack In 2 Years
The Storm worm authors are
waging a multi-pronged attack
and generating the largest
virus attack some researchers
say they've seen in two
years.
"We are
basically in the midst of an
incredibly large attack,"
said Adam Swidler, a senior
manager with security company
Postini. "It's the most
sustained attack that we've
seen. There's been nine to 10
days straight days of attack
at this level."
Swidler said in an
interview with InformationWeek
that the attack started a
little more than a week ago,
and Postini since then has
recorded 200 million spam
e-mails luring users to
malicious Web sites. Before
this attack, an average day
sees about 1 million
virus-laden e-mails, according
to Postini. Last Thursday,
however, the company tracked
42 million Storm-related
messages in that day alone. As
of Tuesday afternoon, Postini
researchers were predicting
they would see that day
between 4 million and 6
million virus e-mails -- 99%
of them associated with the
Storm worm. ..

worm.
But they are
fake posts, according to
Infosecsellout, who said the
blog was hacked on Tuesday
night and will not be revived.
"Infosecsellout is
now dead," the anonymous
blogger said in an e-mail
message. "It was a great

They are quick to attack the
credibility of others in order

Russia launched another cyber warfare attack against the small country of Kyrgyzstan. A distributed denial of service attack (DDOS) took place
against the country in January of 2009. The ip traffic has now been traced back to Russian based servers primarily known for cyber crimes. The
claim is placed against the Russian Business Network (RBN) which is possibly the world's largest botnet with 150 to 180 million nodes. The attack
was successful in knocking three of four internet service providers in the country offline. This is not the first attack from this group which is
suspected of having government sponsorship.

09.04.2009Twitter suffers Denial of Service attack
Twitter was hit with a Denial of Service (DoS) attack earlier today, causing the site to go down for about 2 hours. Services were restored by 11:30
a.m. EST. A DoS attack is an attempt to make a computer resource unavailable to its intended users. This is typically accomplished by continuously
requesting information from the a site, until the sites network resources become too congested or busy to serve pages. CNN reports that although
services have been restored, the attack is still on going, and Twitter is actively working to defend and recover from the incident.

22.06.2007Microsoft Wont Attack Apple
Vista may be under attack, but Microsoft isnt going to fight back anytime soon.
Last week
we wrote about how a nearly endless
wave of negative stories about Microsofts new Windows Vista operating system “ stories about poor business sales, buggy upgrades, and slow speeds “
was creating the impression that the operating system is a failure. Apple is trying to make that label stick with a series of ads that talk about
Vistas śproblems.ť The ads are the tech industrys equivalent of a political candidate attacking a rival.
Microsoft will respond
to these attacks by staying on message, Neil Charney, a general manager for Windows, tells us. Charneys read all the stories and seen the Mac ads. And
he wonders whether or not theyre effective. But he says he wont spend too much time worrying about it.

07.12.20075 User Tips for Configuring Your Hardware in Linux
I have heard lots of complaints about configuring hardware in Linux distributions. This argument has had lots of merit in the past, but with each new
distribution or release, managing hardware has become much easier. With
Ubuntu, the most
popular Linux distribution to date, the developers have spent an incredible amount of time adding drivers and apps to help you configure your
computer. I offer these tips for configuring your hardware as examples of how easy it can be. Please remember that each computer build and its
configuration may be different, so these are general guidelines. Usually there are forums dedicated to each distribution where users and developers
can interact and solve specific issues.
Research Your Hardware. Just like with Windows, if you use Windows you need hardware that is
supported by Windows. Wireless cards are the same for Linux. In most cases, it is black or white. Linux supports it, or it doesn’t. You can find
most hardware information
HERE. For laptop support,

19.08.2008Microsoft limiting Windows
Live Messenger?
The newly released build
792 of
Windows Live Messenger
continues to surprise, some
days after its release.
Mess.Be<
/STRONG>, in its third
"review" part of the build,
points out a few interesting
error messages which appeared
in the string tables:
- "The following
message could not be delivered
because you have exceeded the
maximum number of messages per
minute. Please try again
later."
-
"This message was not sent
because you don't have
permission to send an offline
message."
-
"This message was not sent
because it is too large for
the user's offline message
store."
-
"This message was not sent
because Offline Instant
Messaging is not yet available
in your region."
Those seem quite limiting.
It is unknown yet in what
cases those error messages
will appear in future builds,
but it is suspected that those
will happen during an offline
messaging session with Yahoo!
Messenger users, as this seems
to be the point of this build:
preparing users to Yahoo!
Messenger
interoperability.

26.06.2006Could key-logging be behind webmail attack?
Key-logging malware could be behind the recent web mail attack that saw thousands of email addresses and their associated passwords leaked online,
according to one security expert. Amichai Shulman, from security firm Imperva, believes that the size of the scam shows that it is not a phishing
attack. According to Mr Shulman, the majority of people do not fall for phishing attacks, with only one person falling for such an email in every
1000 sent. "The vast majority of people do not fall prey to phishing attacks and the success rates are around one per 1,000," he told the BBC.

Over the Easter weekend, Twitter feel victim to yet another attack against the micro-blogging service, this time the attacker was 17 year old Mikeyy
Mooney, who claims full responsibility for the attack, saying "I am aware of the attack and yes I am behind this attack". The attack was harmless
in a sense that no passwords or users data was compromised or stolen, only leaving messages on peoples Twitter page such as "Dude, www.StalkDaily.com
is awesome. What's the fuss?". The worm infected other Twitter users when someone visited another person's page, making the worm spread
rapidly. The messages linked users to Mikeyy Mooneys own web site which offers similar features and style as Twitter does.
