Microsoft jacks into the Softgrid

Look ma, no virtualisation window: at Tech.Ed Australia today, Microsoft showed its new "Softgrid" technology that allows apps to run as if they were inside a second copy of Windows. But unlike traditional virtualisation apps, there's no second Windows desktop getting in the way.

Microsoft showed Office 2003 and Office 2007 running side-by-side, even though they can't actually be installed on the same copy of Windows.

Initially, the technology is for corporate users only, but it has huge obvious benefits for home users as well. For example, the ability to install an application, without affecting the system in any permanent way, and be able to remove it completely without relying on the app's uninstaller.

How to fix Vistas Security Center from reporting missing or duplicate programs

The Windows Security Center which is included with Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista is a nice way of seeing the security status overview of your system but sometimes it makes mistakes after you have uninstalled one or more programs and replaced them with others. Heres how to correct those problems with Security Center.

Sometimes, after you have uninstalled a firewall, antivirus or malware detection program the entry remains because the uninstaller failed to remove the entry from the Security Center either by design or just sloppy coding. Either way, you are not stuck and this is easily fixed.

Author apologizes but fails to fix Panda worm

The first man to be arrested in China for virus-writing goes by the name of Li Jun, a 25 year-old man from Wuhan, who was arrested last month for allegedly selling copies of Panda. In an effort to make an example of Li, state police said they made Li write software that would remove the worm, but after analyzing the software, Symantec says this program fails to undo many of the file and registry changes made by Panda and is completely ineffective against some variants of the malware. Panda, which is also known as Fujacks and Radoppan.T, was written in October 2006 and has since spread widely within China. Li made 100,000 renminbi ($12,876) by selling copies of the worm to criminals, who then distributed it. Li's uninstaller tool comes with an apology from the worm-writer himself, claiming that the program was written for research purposes.

" This removal tool is not effective against most of the samples we have tested against and isn't fully effective against any of them. For Li, perhaps he may have learned the hard way that ... it is much easier to write a program to cause destruction than it is to repair the damage ," wrote Symantec researcher Hon Lau on his blog.

Microsoft release IE8 beta 2

Microsoft have released English, German, Japanese and Simplified Chinese beta 2 versions of Internet Explorer 8. The installer weighs in at 23.1 MB and users will be required to remove beta 1 before it can be installed.

Windows Vista users will have to dig deep to find the uninstaller for beta 1, it is located under: Control Panel, Programs & Features and in the left menu: "Installed Updates" under the listing Windows Internet Explorer 8. You will then be required to restart your system before beta 2 can be installed.

Neowin obviously needs some work, as some pages can only be viewed correctly in compatibility mode which can be activated in the address bar like so. IE7 mode is there, but has been changed to this handy new/updated feature which allows only certain sites to display in compatibility mode, while retaining native mode for other websites and/or tabs.
