You can only get the device subsidized if you live in a region where you can't get home delivery which means most will have to pay full retail. The Kindle DX will ship this summer and is up for pre-order now at Amazon.

Confirmed: Windows 7 set to RTM on July 13th

Earlier today the guys over at GeekSmack.net "confirmed" that Windows 7 was set to RTM(Release to market) on July 13, which also coincides with Wzor's unconfirmed rumor last month. A few minutes ago sources close to the company, who wish to remain anonymous, have confirmed to Neowin that Windows 7 is indeed set to RTM on July 13. After a year of furious beta testing and continuous leaks every other week, Microsoft is finally ready to give Windows 7 the green light to hit the market. Currently the Windows 7 team is working on polishing off the RTM build so that no show-stopper bugs are present in Windows 7.

Build a Mac Pro equivalent workstation for 1/3 the cost

George Ou: Conventional wisdom tells us that a digital content creation and CAD professional had to fork out $6000 to $10,000 dollars for a high-end 8-core dual-processor workstation, but this is Real World IT where I say screw conventional wisdom. Ive put on my mad scientist hat again and brewed something up for $2311 with equal or better performance than a $6803 Mac Pro (as configured in Apple screen cap to the left). Now granted you cant run Mac OS X so that might be a show stopper for a Mac user, but there are plenty of Windows users who want something that will run just as fast. If thats you, then keep reading!

Windows 7 RTM contains a rather nasty chkdsk bug

Windows 7 RTM, which will be distributed to MSDN/TechNet and technical beta testers tomorrow, contains a nasty memory leak when the chkdsk command is initiated. The bug occurs when the CHKDSK /R command is initiated on a non-system volume. Memory usage of the chkdsk.exe process soars until the system is using over 90% physical memory. In some cases this will cause the system to become unresponsive and unstable. Some are calling the bug a "show stopper", whilst others (Randall Kennedy) claim it could derail the Windows 7 launch. It's worth noting that Kennedy claimed in November 2008 that Microsoft had delayed the Windows 7 beta to early 2009, even though company officials always stated this was the case.

Microsoft to RTM Windows 7 this week? Build 7260 leaks

Earlier today Neowin reported that Windows 7 build 7232 had leaked. What a difference a few more hours makes, now 7260 has leaked and the Russian site Wzor claims that Microsoft will build the RTM (release to manufacturing) build between June 15-19. If Wzor is correct, and that's a big if and rumour, then we may see the final Windows 7 RTM build ready this weekend. Internal sources indicate that 7260 is still the latest build under the win7_rtm branch. Build 7260 carries the tag 7260.win7_rtm.090612-2110 and is an RTM escrow build meaning vigorous testing will commence to ensure this is the final code unless there are show stopper bugs.

Apple's Leopard rejects latest version of Java

Apple faces yet more flack from the Mac faithful over the discovery that the operating system won't run the latest version of Java. It's one of several beefs relating to the OS X upgrade that is sparking vitriol among the normally docile crowd.

Leopard may have 300 new features, but it is unable to run Java 1.6, even though that same version is available for both Windows and Linux. That has taken some Mac users by surprise, including some on this user forum on Apple's website. Several users there say 1.6 is so central to the development work they do on a daily basis that they will be forced to use an OS other than Leopard if it remains incompatible.

"This is a show stopper for me, and I will have to revert to 10.4, since my job as a software engineer for Sun requires Java 6--this will likely prevent a lot of people from upgrading, and there's a well represented Mac userbase at Sun," a user going by the name buckmelter wrote. 10.4 is a reference to Tiger, the OS X predecessor to Leopard.

In Tokyo, arcade games use real cars

Picture this. You are strapped down in a full-scale Toyota Trueno, Subaru Impreza WRX or Mazda RX7, sweaty palms on steering wheel. Your eyes fixated on what's beyond the windscreen, desperately trying to "drift" your way through the narrow Japanese countryside roads. If all these sound all too familiar to you, yes, we are referring to the Japanese cult anime Initial D . Now Sega is redefining the arcade gaming experience with its Initial D Arcade Stage 4 Limited system.

This life-sized motion simulator has all three of the above-mentioned vehicles each lined up in front of a giant projection screen and installed with a moving platform. The level of detail is truly out of this world. Imagine real vehicle chassis, authentic racing wheels and even bucket seats! It's a pity some of the in-car instruments are non- functional, though we doubt it will be a major show-stopper for diehard manga fans.

Another Vista Activation Crack Appears

Buzz about a Windows Vista zero-day vulnerability is troubling enough (although probably overblown). Now, there appears to be a second product activation hack, this one designed to fool the activation timer into not counting down. The activation hack is quite different from the first one, which involved setting up a Key Management Service server. Microsoft also released an update blocking hybrid testing/final Vista "Monster" code that could bypass product activation.

"Recently it has been reported that activation of Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system has been compromised," a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement in response to a Microsoft Watch inquiry. "Microsoft is investigating this reported activation breach; however, there is no concrete evidence that this breach has been automated to the point that it is widely deployable." The not "widely deployable" statement, while likely true, isn't denial of an actual activation breach.

I've read instructions, which I won't link to, and comments from people successfully trying the so-called Time Stopper hack; I haven't tested it and wouldn't because of possible security breach when applying a downloaded crack as part of the process. As the Microsoft spokesperson acknowledged, there are reports about the crack, which requires setting a computer's BIOS clock to 2099. The hack does work on 32-bit Windows Vista installations but not necessarily 64-bit versions. The process requires some other Windows changes and eventual clock reset from within Vista leading to a perpetual state of 30 days to activation.

Is a time machine possible?

A bit off topic but interesting nevertheless...

Amos Ori, a professor at Israel's Technion, has published a paper in Physical Review outlining a model of a theoretical time machine. Conceivably, these ideas could one day help humans travel back in time.

The concept revolves around controlling the curvature of space and time. Einstein's theory of relatively states that the space/time continuum can be flat, but it can also be curved by gravitational fields. Ori is investigating whether the laws of gravity will permit curving space and time in such a way as to make travel possible.

"The machine is spacetime itself," he stated in a prepared statement. "Today, if we were to create a time machine, an area with a warp like this in space that would enable time lines to close on themselves, it might enable future generations to return to visit our time.

Leopard Allegedly Facing Java Problems

Early adopters of Apples newly released OS X 10.5 Leopard operating system may soon have a sour taste in their mouth as reports file in that users are unable to work with the latest version of the Java programming language. Following the release of OS X Leopard on Friday evening, threads began to appear in Apples support forum where numerous users reported that code written in Java 1.6 (also known as Java 6) failed to execute. The problem allegedly lies in an outdated version of the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), an application that allows OS X to interpret and run Java code. Java 1.6 was officially released in December 2006, but Leopard reportedly supports only Java 1.4 due to Apples insistence on developing the JVM themselves, rather than allow Sun to do it. Apple did not respond to a request for comment.

Users on Apples support forums are, to say the least, a bit miffed at the development. " This is a show stopper for me, and I will have to revert to 10.4, since my job as a software engineer for Sun requires Java 6, " wrote one user. " This will likely prevent a lot of people from upgrading. " Users were further angered when many of the threads about the issue were reportedly deleted from Apples support forum without explanation.
