09.04.2008Microsoft Kills Windows Validation and Office Validation Anti-Piracy Efforts
Microsoft's anti-piracy
efforts will undertake a major
overhauling. The Redmond
company plans to take down
both the Windows Validation
Assistant and the Office
Validation Assistant.
However, Microsoft is
going to fill in the empty
spaces left by the
discontinuing of WVA and OVA
with Windows Comparison Guide
(WCG) and the Office
Comparison Guide (OCG).
Additionally there is also the
old trust Windows Genuine
Advantage and Office Genuine
Advantage that will survive
the anti-piracy cancelled
services. Still, this is not
the end of the upgrades in
stored for the Microsoft
anti-piracy programs. Feature
updates and additions are also
planned to be introduced.
"We're finally
taking down both the Windows
Validation Assistant and the
Office Validation Assistant.
The WVA was a prototype for
WGA; it was the first tool
launched that offered a
web-based validation that
could help find evidence that
a copy wasn't genuine that
otherwise might be hard for
the average person to find
(such as bad or leaked product
keys, etc.) The good news is
that we're replacing the WVA
with the Windows Comparison
Guide (WCG) and the Office
Comparison Guide (OCG). These
guides offer much of the same
functionality as the WVA did
by walking users through a
quiz that helps them match the
anti-piracy features of the
products they have, but
without the web-based
validation. For that we're
pointing people directly to
WGA,"
revealed
Alex
Kochis, a senior licensing
manager on the WGA team. ..

08.04.2008Heck, I'm Son of a Software Pirate
Joe Wilcox: About a year ago,
Microsoft brandished my mom a software pirate. Now, I've been nabbed, too.
She professed her innocence, as
did I. A Microsoft support technician spent about four hours fixing mom's problem. A corrupt file trigged the piracy validation failure. I used it as
evidence that Windows Genuine Advantage does indeed generate false positives. But Microsoft disagreed, saying there was no false positive. Mom was
always legal; the system worked. Say what?
I never thought Microsoft would come after me? On Friday night, my copy of Office 2007
Ultimate failed to validate. Shoot, that makes me a pirate, too. Weeks earlier, Office 2007 activated just fine, so I was surprised by the sudden
non-genuine status. I re-ran the validation mechanism several times and once for Windows Vista. The operating system validated just fine.

15.12.2007Office Genuine Advantage (OGA), Now Mandatory
If you don't like the
mandatory anti-piracy checks
that Microsoft now enforces
for Windows, brace yourself.
The Microsoft Office
productivity and collaboration
suite is about to get a
similar program.
The company's Office
Genuine Advantage (OGA)
program will require mandatory
validation of Office software
starting October 27, the
software vendor quietly
disclosed today. After that
date, any Office Online
templates downloaded from
within the Office 2007
Microsoft Office System
applications will require
validation of legitimacy.
Similarly, starting in
January, users of Office
Update will have to validate
the legitimacy of their Office
software before they can use
the service, Microsoft
added.
Users
absolutely hated the first
iteration of the Windows
Genuine Advantage (WGA)
program, and their protests
pressured the company into
revising it about a year after
it launched in July 2005.
Microsoft said in a
press statement that the
validation process will be
"quick and simple" for
users. The OGA program,
currently in the testing
phase, is now available in 26
languages worldwide. OGA is a
sibling program to WGA; both
automatically check a user's
version of Microsoft software
to ensure it is not
counterfeit or pirated.

Microsoft will continue to deliver genuine updates and notifications for XP users. The program has been criticized for its punishment tactics and
false-positive results, even though Microsoft has fixed some of these problems in Vista SP1. According to Microsoft, Windows 7's activation will
be built on the same software protection platform that was part of Vista, with some minor tweaks made for Windows 7.

15.12.2006WGA Servers Encounter Glitch
Updated August 25th, 5:37PM EST
It seems Microsoft's Genuine Validation servers encountered a glitch today, after users started
to report that they were booting up their systems only to find them in reduced functionality mode.
Windows Genuine Advantage
program manager, Phil Liu, confirmed the issue today on the Microsoft Community Forums that users running Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system
may find their systems stuck in reduced functionality mode, where users are left with nothing more than an Internet Explorer window and Activation
capabilities.
Windows XP users are apparently also affected, although its effects have not been told publicly yet.
The issue is expected to be resolved by either Monday or Tuesday, but for those who have already encountered the issue, there is a quick
fix; simply visit the Windows Genuine Advantage site to revalidate your copy of Windows. Those who have yet to encounter the glitch, it is suggested
that you do not fully shut down your systems and simply put them into Sleep mode until the issue is resolved.
Update: According to
Ars
Technica, this issue is also affecting users running Windows XP. Users are also suggested to avoid anything that requires contacting the WGA
servers such as Windows Update, activation, WGA downloads and such; as it may result in your copy of Windows being invalidated.
