11.07.2007Something New when Uninstalling Drivers and Devices on Windows Vista
Chris Mu: Today, I'd like to share a background story about a KB article that describe a interesting behavior in Windows Vista that is different with
previous OS. Maybe it is not the most important or highest impacted issue occurs in Windows Vista, but I think it will impact some of you when you are
troubleshooting for your firendes/family... OK, let go through this issue.
This issue is about re-install network adapter in
Windows Vista and the KB article for this issue will be KB945399 and published in a few days. The issue can be reproduced in many computer models and
you will encounter it when you uninstall a network adapter device using Device Manager. Maybe you have to troubleshoot whether the network adapter
driver installed is right to troubleshoot OS network issue. Therefore, after uninstall the adapter, you may try to install another driver for the
device ... Everything works fine in Windows XP/Server 2003 and so on. However, when you try to do same action in Windows Vista, the popular OS
nowadays, you will see soon after the uninstall process completes, PnP detects the network adapter as a new device and automatically installs the
device and drivers. Instead, in Windows XP, only after you click to scan hardware change, the PnP will detect the network adapter and install the
driver.

10.04.2006Enable Vistas two-way firewall with Vista Firewall Control
Microsoft ships Vista with a better firewall than previous versions of Vista but its configuration isnt so great right out of the box and unless you
want to set up rules manually, yourself, its just better to run a third party firewall. But that can pose entirely new problems.
It seems that many
third
party solutions dont play nice with Vista in one or more ways. Some can prevent Vista from retrieving updates, others can freeze the operating
system seemingly at random and others just plain dont work at all.
That leaves running the Vista firewall itself. Running the
firewall thats built in to the operating system is not something I usually recommend unless you have Mac OSX or Linux which arent very prone to any
kind of attack.

13.01.2008Microsoft: Sorry we used GPLv2 code illegally
Microsoft tonight issued an update on the reports that the company used open source code in their Windows 7 USB/DVD tool, illegally. Neowin
originally reported earlier this week that Microsoft had pulled the tool after complains by Rafael Rivera over some of the content of the Windows 7
USB/DVD download tool. Microsoft issued the following statement regarding the reports: After looking at the code in question, we are now able to
confirm this was indeed the case, although it was not intentional on our part. While we had contracted with a third party to create the tool, we share
responsibility as we did not catch it as part of our code review process.

14.11.2009Morfik Builds First iPhone Development Tool
WebOS vendor
Morfik has created a
platform for developers to
build applications for
Apple's iPhone, which is
being released Friday night.
Morfik claims this is the
first development tool for the
iPhone.
Up till this
point, no one had announced a
development tool for the
iPhone - although there have
been suggestions by bloggers
that Adobe AIR and Google GWT
might become iPhone
development platforms.
However, it seems Morfik is
the first to do it.
Morfik says that Scriptor,
a utility built into their
WebOS AppsBuilder platform,
enables development of
applications for products such
as the iPhone. To prove that
point, Morfik used Scriptor to
develop
iChess, a working example
of an iPhone application.
That link is the iPhone
version, but see also
http://chess.morfik.com
for a browser version. It is a
chess app, a favorite
prototyping app of Morfik. It
is running on EC2 now and can
be used by purchasers of the
iPhone on Friday. Also
developers can download the
AppsBuilder with Scriptor now
from
Morfik's homepage.
There is of course a lot
of anticipation around third
party iPhone apps - indeed
there are
dedicate
d sites for this already.
As last100 recently noted,
Apple will
allow
third party apps for
iPhone - by giving them
access through the web (not
the OS)...

11.12.2007Stardock to announce DeskScapes 2.0 Vista Ultimate Extras going the Way of the Dodo
Long Zheng:
Windows Ultimate Extras is losing value faster than
the US dollar as one of the few extras is soon to be superseded by a free third-party application that works not only on Vista Ultimate, but Home
Premium and Business versions as well. That extra would be
DreamScene, that third party would
be
Stardock and that application would be
DeskScapes 2.0. Those grumpy looking people in the corner would be
Ultimate Extra advocates.
Tomorrow, Stardock will announce
DeskScapes 2.0 the second version of its desktop background visualiser tool for Windows Vista. Formerly DeskScapes was an
extension to the DreamScene extra, allowing for dynamic generated Dreams on top of just the motion videos allowed by DreamScene itself. Now, both
formats will be supported by DeskScapes 2.0 without the requirements for DreamScene or Vista Ultimate.

How to identify a buggy device driver on Windows Vista
If your computer is acting unpredictably, locking up, and encountering blue screens of death, then youre most likely the victim of a faulty driver.
The Driver Verifier Manager (DFV) is a great tool for troubleshooting driver problems by identifying the troubling driver. Although DFV does not
actually fix the driver, it still is a really useful tool because it helps you identify the troubling driver so you can choose to delete or update the
driver.
Before you attempt to use this tool, please be sure that your are really having driver problems. The tool will prevent
your computer from starting by identifying the troubling driver. I say this only because it may be a lengthy process for you but if you are
having troubles, it will definitely be worth it.

Intel's BIOS tool spells death bell for third party utilities
ECS is showing
Intel's backup utility called
the System Recovery Tool.
This utility sits inside
the BIOS of a motherboard that
of course, sports Intel's
latest chipsets. The
application features partition
and disk image backup and
recovery, just like a lot of
third-party applications.
However, being built inside
the BIOS, it has the advantage
of not needing any sort of
boot or recovery CDs, rather
pressing a function key (F3 in
the case of ECS's boards) on
a keyboard.
The image
creation process is very
simple - press the F3 key,
pick the option Create new
image, choose what partition
will be backed up and the
destination (different
partition, CD, DVD medium).
You can expect this
feature to come on many
motherboards in near future.
