Evolution of Microsoft Word

Nathan Weinberg: This blog has a screenshot and commentary collection, looking at Microsoft Word over the last twenty years. Its more amazing how many things were in place already in 1989, including the familiar toolbar layout, and how long it took some things to change. You can see Microsoft made the right move with Office 2007, given how the only major changes in the previous several versions all focused on that stupid Clippy character.

Worst Windows flaws of the past decade

June 25, 1998, and June 30, 2008, marked two important milestones in Microsoft's evolution of the Windows OS -- the passing of the torch from Windows 95 to Windows 98, and the less seemly transition from XP to Vista.

In the 3,659 days between, users of Windows have been forced to bear witness to another evolution of sorts: bugs that left Windows open to exploits that appeared almost as fast as you could say, "On the Origin of Species."

Konami and Reebok Team Up For Pro Evolution Soccer

Konami has teamed up with sportswear giant Reebok to cross-promote brands ahead of the release of Pro Evolution Soccer 6 in Europe later this month. As well as the Reebok brand appearing in-game, the two companies will work together on a range of marketing and promotional campaigns.

"Pro Evolution Soccer 6 is an outstanding football simulation and Reebok is delighted to be involved with a game that is so highly regarded in both the gaming community and the youth marketplace as a whole," said Roy Gardner, Reebok's Euro marketing director. Konami's Euro marketing and PR boss, Martin Schneider, added: "Reebok's efforts at working closely with target age groups akin to those of Pro Evolution Soccer 6 makes them a perfect partner for Konami."

"We are delighted to be working closely with them to extend awareness of both brands in a partnership that perfectly fits with both companies," he added. Pro Evolution Soccer 6 is due for release across Europe on PS2, Xbox 360 and PC, October 26th.

Pro Evolution Soccer 6 Hits Stores Early

Brits love their footie, so when family retailer Woolworths released Pro Evolution Soccer 6 two days early they should have expected at least a little bit of fuss to be made about it. After reading about the early release on Gamespot this morning I headed off into the dangerous place that is Luton Town centre on a bank holiday week and low and behold, Pro Evo 6 is on sale, pretty much everywhere.

Obviously Konami are a little annoyed at this leak, which they say is unfair on stores that haven't yet received their shipments of the game with a Konami rep stating, "The situation could escalate into retail and chart chaos, this is not something we condone." "It leads to anarchy in the market, and some retailers who do not yet have stock or are unable to react quick enough will be disadvantaged."

Pro Evolution Soccer 6 is officially released tomorrow, but if you have time you can still venture into your own chav infested town centre and attempt to pick one up today.

DirectX 10.1 in Windows Vista SP1 - The Evolution

As Windows Vista brought to the table the exclusive DirectX 10, the first service pack for the operating system will evolve Microsofts graphics technology to version 10.1. DirectX 10.1 is already available to over 12,000 testers via the first beta of Vista Service Pack 1, concomitantly with the official release of Build 6001.16659. Although the testing milestones of Vista, Windows Server 2008 and Windows XP SP3 Beta, are officially limited in terms of access, a hack is available designed to permit the download of Windows Vista SP1 Beta Build 6001.16659 straight from Microsoft, and simultaneously test drive DirectX 10.1.

However, Vista users have to understand that DirectX 10.1, as well as DirectX 10 is a technology intimately connected with the underlying graphics card, such as the upcoming ATI Radeon HD 3800 Series. According to an AMD whitepaper focused on the implementation of DirectX 10.1 in the ATI Radeon HD 3800 Series, the latest application programming interface from Microsoft, manages to "unlock the state of the art in GPU technology."

So what's the business case for Windows Vista?

The next few weeks could be crucial in the evolution of Windows Vista, Microsoft's next client operating system. Microsoft engineers will crunch through feedback from 500,000 beta testers who evaluated the latest Windows Vista Community Technology Preview (CTP).

At stake is a "feature complete" Windows Vista CTP due for release in "early" 2006. At last, after three years of big promises and broken dreams, we should be able to cut away the hype and get a realistic idea of Windows Vista's features and capabilities.

As Microsoft decides what to put into Vista, one thing has become clear: after months of glitzy presentations Microsoft must explain in unambiguous terms why exactly corporate IT departments should bother upgrading, instead of waiting to receive the new software when they buy their next round of PCs...

Konami Talks Pro Evolution Soccer 6

Konami today released further details on Pro Evolution Soccer 6, confirming that the title will be making its next-generation debut on the Xbox 360.

Boasting improved visuals, enhanced animations and a plethora of gameplay additions, the Xbox 360 version will be joined by the PlayStation2, PSP, Nintendo DS and PC versions, all scheduled for release in October.

With the sixth title in the series, Shingo 'Seabass' Takatsuka and his team have incorporated a variety of new features and improvements, ranging from player AI enhancements to advancements to the physics engine, resulting in players working to turn defenders as they receive the ball, and defenders standing slightly off to prevent such moves.

Pro Evolution Soccer 6 also features an improved shooting technique, which introduces a greater selection of snap shots and re-worked volleys and half-volleys. Players can also retain control of the ball with a sliding tackle (thank you Konami), along with all-new feints and tricks courtesy of the reworked dribbling system.

More importantly, Konami have continued to secure licenses for Pro Evolution Soccer 6, which will feature the fully-licensed kits for the Czech, French, Australian, English, Italian, Argentinian, Spanish and Swedish national sides. The French Championat league has also been added, in addition to agreements with Bayern Munich, Sporting Lisbon, Olympiacos and Manchester United.

Finally the online aspects of the PlayStation2 and PC version have been tweaked, implementing a new system that allows up to eight players to compete via four linked systems.

"Pro Evolution Soccer 6 is one of the most eagerly-awaited games of the year, and we are delighted to be able to come to the Games Convention with so many exciting advances to announce," commented Martin Schneider, Sales and Marketing Director for Konami in Germany. "As we show the first Next Generation version of the game for Xbox 360, we are sure that visitors to the Konami stand will see that the future of the Pro Evolution Soccer series is very bright indeed."

Mundie: Future software to exist in the cloud and on your PC

For all the talk about future software leaving the desktop and running exclusively from services on the Internet, Microsoft chief research and strategy officer Craig Mundie doubts this will be so.

Speaking in Los Angeles at WinHEC 2007, Mundie's keynote speech, "The evolution of computing," described, in part, the future of software. He admitted desktop software has reached a road bump; faster apps will require faster CPUs on the PC and that's becoming harder to accomplish--the old way.

Mundie talked on Tuesday morning about the evolution of multicore processor architecture on desktops and laptops. He said that the 3Ghz dual core processor on today's PCs will soon give way to 3Ghz quad core and then 3Ghz 8 cores down the road. The new processors will require new software languages. The new programming languages will run programs in parallel and on multiple platforms--PC, mobile, and the Internet. ..

Technology. Evolution or De-evolution?

With technology having grown to be as widely-used and widely-recognized as it is now, its emergence was bound to have profound effects on human life.

The Internet, for example, has given us access to news from around the world, new mediums of entertainment, social networking, etc. It has, to some extent, given human beings the power to transcend their current societies and create new societies online. With such a great power, is there a responsibility attached?

Marshall McLuhan taught us all that the emergence of new mediums would have to, by definition, render some previous method obsolete. What happens when the method being rendered obsolete is something that is foundational to human beings?

As an example let's briefly look at communication as a medium for a brief moment. Can you imagine a future where people speak without voices? Imagine a more efficient method of speech, perhaps if advancements in technology render speech in its current form obsolete, will we tend to see our naturally created faculty being rendered obsolete by a subsequent human creation? Over a period of time, just as bats have a reduced faculty of eyesight that has been caused by their environment, will human beings then lose the ability to speak in the ways we utilize speech presently?

Certainly civilization in its present form would seem strange if showed to someone from a vastly different time. There are electronic wheelchair machines which assist in the movement of people with a challenged physical faculty, and do so in a manner that would probably be considered more efficient than the organic method of walking or running. Why then do human beings choose to walk?

An assumption I'm willing to make is that if there were to exist, for example, a technology that would bathe and dress us in the mornings with increased efficiency, we would gladly utilize such. Furthermore and progressively I assume that other methods that increase efficiency would be adopted as well, eventually leading to a redefinition of all our natural organic faculties.

Such a world may be almost impossible to imagine, a world in which human beings have replaced all that nature has given them with better, created systems. My question to you is whether or not it is as impossible, for example, as the concept of the Internet would have seemed in the late 1800's.
