Locking Down Windows Server 2008 Terminal Services

Some of the greatest enhancements to Terminal Services in its Windows Server 2008 implementation pertain to its overall security. Being one of the most prolifically used forms of remote server access by both administrators and users alike, this is not too much of a surprise and is greatly welcomed. In this article we will go through several things you can do to make your Terminal Server environment more secure...

winbeta.org - 20.05.2009

Configuring the Windows Server 2008 Terminal Services Gateway (Part 1)

Thomas Shinder: Microsoft security administrators have always been a bit wary of publishing Terminal Servers to the Internet. And for good reason there was no ability to pre-authenticate connections or use policy to determine which users could access which Terminal Servers. The lack of pre-authentication was an especially difficult problem. Without pre-authentication, anonymous users could leverage their anonymous connections to compromise the published Terminal Server. A compromised Terminal Server is perhaps the most dangerous exploit possible against your network, as the attacker has access to a full operating system to launch his attacks.

In this, part two of the article series, we will finish up by installing and configuring the TS Gateway and the RDP client. Then we will make the connection and see it work.

How Microsoft IT Uses Windows Sever 2008 Terminal Services

Tony Soper: Microsoft employees have enjoyed the benefits of Terminal Services in Windows Server 2008 since long before it was shipped. See how in the webcast: How Microsoft IT Deployed Windows Terminal Services 2008 and Terminal Server Gateway Technologies, scheduled Tuesday, March 18, 2008. You can also read the white paper:

How MSIT Uses Terminal Services as a Scalable Remote Access Solution

This white paper discusses how Microsoft IT used Windows Server 2008 Terminal Services to create a scalable remote access solution that is accessible by using HTTPS connections from any location worldwide.

winbeta.org - 07.03.2008

Top 5 Reasons to Upgrade to Windows Server 2008 Terminal Services

Via Tony Soper's blog:

1. Terminal Services RemoteApp applications appear no different than local applications, tightly integrated with the task bar and new Windows Vista features like 3-D flip. Terminal Services RemoteApp helps improve the end user experience and reduce training requirements.

2. Terminal Services Gateway provides a highly secure connection between internal applications and data to users outside the firewall. It delivers critical applications and data to mobile employees without additional VPN infrastructure.

3. Terminal Services Web Access helps simplify application deployment by making applications available from a web page or a SharePoint portal without installing them on the local PC. Speed application deployment by quickly connecting users with the applications they need.

4. Terminal Services Session Broker delivers session-based load-balancing to a Terminal Services Farm. Terminal Services Session Broker helps bring better uptime and performance to your Terminal Services environment.

5. Terminal Services Easy Print leverages the client-side print driver (no server side driver needed) to enable fast and reliable printing to a local or network-attached printer. End users can more productively work from remote locations.

Windows Server 2008: Terminal Services Architecture

Day Fourteen - we are past the halfway point. A good portion of the next two weeks will be devoted to Terminal Services and the new TS features. So strap in, and let's get started ...

We talked about the Windows Server 2008 Startup Processes in an earlier post. SMSS.EXE is still the first user-mode process created during the boot process as in previous versions of Windows. The change is that now SMSS.EXE launches a second instance of itself to configure Session 0, which is dedicated to system processes. The instance of SMSS.EXE dedicated to Session 0 launches the Windows Startup Application (WININIT.EXE) as well as an instance of CSRSS.EXE for Session 0, after which it exits. WININIT.EXE continues the startup process by starting SERVICES.EXE and LSASS.EXE as well as a new process, the Local Session Manager (LSM.EXE) which manages Terminal Server connections for the machine.

winbeta.org - 14.02.2008

Server Manager: A closer look at its role in Windows Server 2008

Windows Server 2008, when it arrives on the scene early next year, will come with a host of new features and functionality. Upgrades like improved clustering support, better Terminal Services and enhanced Group Policy make it an easy win for many IT managers. But one enhancement to Windows Server 2008 that's getting a lot of attention is Server Manager.

Compared to your father's operating system, Windows Server 2008 goes far into consolidating many previously separated administrative consoles. Integrating a central wizard-driven interface for installing and uninstalling server components along with many management functions, Server Manager helps systems administrators tailor their servers just the way they want them.

There are major differences in relation to how you'll be working with your servers once you move to Windows Server 2008. First, with security being a major Microsoft focus in this operating system, you'll find a big change in what is installed onto a basic instance of Windows Server 2008 - essentially nothing.

Getting to Know RDP

The Remote Desktop Protocol, or RDP, allows you to access machines remotely. It's a very useful piece of technology that has undoubtedly saved more than a few system admins over the years.

RDP has a long history of providing better and better remote access support. It was introduced in 1998 for Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server Edition (TSE) and has evolved in almost every release of Windows since. Beginning with Windows 2000, almost anyone could easily access a server system remotely because Terminal Services was introduced as an optional Windows component and could be configured so you could use the system either as an actual Terminal Server or for what we call Remote Desktop today.

Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP delivered native Remote Desktop functionality, allowing you to control the system as if you were there locally. Today, I use Remote Desktop every day to access my home PC and server remotely, and to use my Media Center Extender.

Microsoft Partners Embracing Server Virtualization

Microsoft partners are eagerly anticipating the new features of Windows Server 2008, which include network access protection, terminal services, Bitlocker, and beefed up Active Directory services.

But for many partners, the virtualization features of the next Windows Server are the biggest game changer.

"Virtualization is the next big thing and it's what makes utility computing possible. In addition to allowing you to deliver backup and disaster recovery solutions, it also lends itself to hardware portability," said David Sobel, CEO of Evolve Technologies, a Fairfax, Va.-based solution provider.

What Windows Server 2008 won't have, at least not initially, is live migration. Live migration, part of the VMware and Xen-based virtualization platforms, enables users to quickly and easily migrate virtual machines from one system to another system. ..

Windows Server 2008 R2 and Remote Desktop Services (RDS), A New Name for Terminal Services

In Windows Server 2008 R2, Terminal Services is renamed to Remote Desktop Services (RDS). RDS introduces the new Remote Desktop Connection Broker an expansion of the Session Broker in Windows Server 2008 which provides the administrator with a unified experience for setting up user access to both Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) and traditional session-based remote desktops. Together with Hyper-V and System Center Virtual Machine Manager, the Remote Desktop Connection Broker enables a VDI solution. The Remote Desktop Connection Broker it complements shared RDS infrastructure components in Windows Server 2008, such as Remote Desktop Web Access or Remote Desktop Gateway. Windows Server 2008 R2 also introduces a series of platform enhancements for remote desktop users such as support for multiple physical monitors, redirection of multimedia and 3D content, including Vista Aero, and enhanced, bi-directional audio support.
