17.5.2009Facebook caves to user demands over layout
If you were one of the many who signed an online petition or joined a group over the distaste of the new Facebook layout; good news has arrived. The
Facebook team has announced that they will alter the new layout based on feedback that they have received over the last two weeks. The original goal
of the new layout was to offer a similar format to rival twitter. But when a group on Facebook reached 45,000 people who said that they hated the new
layout and an online petition reached 1.7 million signatures, the Facebook team got the memo.

05.03.2009Print Layout in Google Docs
Google Docs has a new way of displaying documents: fixed-width page view (or print layout in Microsoft Word).
Documents are more readable and look closer to the way they appear when printed. The previous mode (plain view, also called web layout in Microsoft
Word) is available in the new View menu.
The OpenOffice
wiki explains the advantages and disadvantages of different word processing layouts: the web layout is useful for documents that are written for
presentation, is suboptimal for editing because of the long lines and acts as a final preview.

03.09.2007Internet Explorer 8 and Adaptive Zoom
Saloni Mira Rai, a program manager on the Internet Explorer 8 Layout team provides a walk through of the changes in Zoom for Internet Explorer 8:
Zoom lets you enlarge or reduce the view of a web page to improve readability. The feature is particularly useful on really large
and really small displays, allowing for scaling of content while maintaining the intended layout of the page. The second iteration of the zoom feature
(first shipped in Internet Explorer 7) focuses on improving the existing experience by providing a higher quality, more predictable, and persistent
zooming experience.

26.03.2008Leaked documents reveal possible Microsoft Store layout
A few hours ago Gizmodo received an entire PowerPoint presentation revealing the possible layout and concepts of Microsoft's upcoming retail
stores. While the documents are fairly old, according to our own sources, the final design for the stores has not yet been finalized. After taking
a look at the document, it appears that Microsoft is going to be focusing on Windows 7, Xbox, Windows Media Center (Including Surface) and Windows
Mobile. It can be assumed that looking through the slides that there is going to be a massive digital media wall that wraps around the entire store.

a higher resolution display could be expected within a year. However this was not confirmed by the Microsoft's User Experience Evangelist for

30.05.2007WebSlices now appearing on Wikipedia article near you
Long Zheng: Trust the open-source lovin’ contributors at
Wikipedia to be early adopters of Microsoft
web technologies. Beginning just a couple of days ago, Wikipedia user “
Soumyasch” began building Wiki templates to support the new content-subscription
feature in Internet Explorer 8 called
WebSlices which allow
you to save and retrieve snippets of information from web pages without loading the whole page.
So far the template is only
implemented on the
“Acid3″ Wiki. On this page it allows users to save a WebSlice of a
table which records the compatibility of different layout engines and the web standards test. As a result, you can then just bring up this table by
clicking on the toolbar. As a built-in feature of WebSlices, if the content is ever updated, it will also be highlighted in the toolbar.

28.03.2008Evolution of Microsoft Word
Nathan Weinberg:
This blog has a
screenshot and commentary collection, looking at Microsoft Word over the last twenty years. Its more amazing how many things were in place already
in 1989, including the familiar toolbar layout, and how long it took some things to change. You can see Microsoft made the right move with Office
2007, given how the only major changes in the previous several versions all focused on that stupid Clippy character.

10.03.2008Hitachi Does Microsoft Surface Without the Table
According to CNET.co.uk, who randomly stumbled into a booth at CES, Toshiba has created a Microsoft
Surface-type system without the unwieldy table. 'The
StarBoard system is really two technologies in one. Firstly, it features Hitachi's short-throw LCD projector. This is important, because the
projector sits mere inches from the interactive surface. This means you get a huge 50-inch, in fact bright screen, which doesn't get blocked out by
your head as you lean over the table. The image it projects is incredibly high-quality too, and there was no noticeable distortion.' The video
attached to the article shows the system in action.
It should be noted that the implication that leaning over the table blocks a
projection from above is spurious; the Surface projects an image from below. The 'overhead' setup at CES was a camera designed to show onlookers
what was taking place on the table.

17.01.2008Would you pay $1,499 for the Microsoft Oahu Surface table?
Microsoft has been dangling the possibility of a
smaller, more consumer-centric version of its
Surface multi-touch tabletop computer for the past few months. Now that form factor has a codename: Oahu.
Long Zheng of
istartedsomething.com has
more details
on Oahu, which he has gleaned from a Microsoft marketing survey evaluating interest in a more affordable, smaller, home-oriented Surface. As Zheng
notes the survey asked participants about a few different forms of Oahu a table for meals, a counter top or games table.

14.10.2008Google patent for minimalistic home page approved
Google's home page is very well known around the Internet, because it's simple, clean, and easy to understand. It may not seem as though much
work has gone into it, but that doesn't mean it's any less effective; apparently, it's such an icon that Google has now managed to patent
it, preventing others from using the layout. According to Valleywag, the patent was submitted a hefty 5 and a half years ago, back in early 2004, and
it has taken this long for it to be approved.

03.09.2009MySpace to Shake up Its Layout
MySpace will unveil next week a large-scale redesign that will alter major components of the social-networking site, like its home page, navigation
scheme, search engine and video player. On Wednesday, MySpace users will see the first phase of the redesign, which has been in the works for the past
six months, according to the company.
MySpace, the world's most popular social-networking site, expects the changes to boost user
engagement by making the site easier to navigate. MySpace is routinely criticized by users and observers for a layout that many consider visually
strident and messy. Its members have many options to alter their profile pages, such as changing their background color, adding hyperactive
animations, using fonts of many sizes and colors and plastering them with videos and photo slideshows.

13.06.2008War breaks out between AdBlock Plus and NoScript
A quiet war has broken out between the authors of AdBlock Plus and NoScript and money is on the table. Both are trying to outdo each other by
disabling each other's functionality. The issue at stake is NoScript's behavior of showing a changelog window whenever it gets a new update,
which of late has been updated rather frequently. And unsurprisingly, that changelog window is filled with ads that generate revenue for NoScript.
AdBlock Plus on the other hand is commited to blocking ads regardless of where they are from; and this has treaded on the tail of the author of
NoScript.

it's still quite an ambitious
