Microsoft promises Vista-Windows Mobile 6 sync fix by mid-June

Following Smartphone Thoughts earlier finding that Windows XP PCs with ActiveSync can sync files with Windows Mobile Standard smartphones while Windows Vista PCs with Windows Mobile Device Center cannot sync files, Microsoft has given now an official statement.

According to Brighthand, Microsoft is aware that Windows Mobile 6 users can synchronize files between PCs and smartphones with Active Sync 4.5 only but the Redmond-based software giant will update Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC) on Windows Vista PCs to support file synchronization with Windows Mobile 6 by mid-June.

"We appreciate our customers continuing to use ActiveSync 4.5 for file synchronization until this update is available and are looking forward to offering the WMDC synchronize option very soon." ..

Google announces Google Sync

Wireless syncing seems to be all the rage these days, and if you're using Google's Contacts and Calendars service but get tired of have to manually sync your info, this is the tool for you. Lifehacker reports that Google Sync can work on your iPhone (or iPod touch), Symbian phones, BlackBerry or Windows Mobile devices. The Sync service itself uses a Microsoft ActiveSync protocol in order to keep your data up to date. It's a Push service, meaning that you won't have to push any 'Synchronize' buttons in order to update your phone; it'll just happen.

Microsoft Sync Framework CTP1 Refresh

Microsoft Sync Framework is a comprehensive synchronization platform that enables collaboration and offline scenarios for applications, services and devices. Developers can build sync ecosystems that integrate any application, any type of data, using any protocol over any network.

The Microsoft Sync Framework provides a platform for taking web services and databases offline. In addition, it provides optimized P2P sync of any type of file including contacts, music, videos, images and settings. The extensible framework includes built-in support for synchronizing relational databases, NTFS/FAT file systems, FeedSync compliant feeds (formerly known as Simple Sharing Extensions), devices and web services.

Microsoft Strips Another Key Feature from Vista

It seems another major feature has been stripped from Windows Vista. PC-to-PC sync, which Microsoft co-president Jim Allchin described as one of his favorite Vista features back in January. "You really can leave all your documents on a server and use cached copies on the client," he said. "It's just synchronizing the files when you make changes, as needed."

It's unclear whether PC-to-PC sync will appear later, perhaps as a Web download update to Vista, or in a future Windows release. (Microsoft does plan to offer XPS functionality via a Web download to Vista users.) Typically, when Microsoft drops features from the Windows version currently in development, those features get lumped into the next release. But Microsoft has indicated that it will be releasing more frequent Windows updates going forward, though it hasn't yet specified how it will deliver those updates.

Windows Live Sync released for Windows- and Mac

Windows Live Sync, the replacement for the older Windows Live FolderShare service, is now available, for both Windows and Mac OS X users. Users upgrading from FolderShare only have a few steps to follow in order to transition to the new service:

- Install the software on each of your computers that previously ran FolderShare so Sync can automatically reconnect your synchronized folders.
- To keep sharing your synchronized folders, you'll need to send your pals a new invitation. Don't worry if they don't have a Windows Live ID; we'll help them get set up using their preferred e-mail address.
- Your synchronized folders will be set to automatically sync after migrating. If you'd prefer to sync on demand, just visit the Sync website to adjust that.

So, what's new?
- Higher file limitsup to 20 synchronized folders (formerly known as libraries) with up to 20,000 files in each one.
- Integration with Windows Live ID.
- Integration with the Recycle Bin.
- Unicode support.
- More languages for Windows (46 in all).
- And lots of bug fixes.

Extending Windows: Ford Sync demo from CES

More details emerge on Microsofts online-offline sync platform

The biggest news out of the Microsoft TechEd Developers conference that kicked off on November 5 is the official announcement of Microsofts offline/online sync platform.

Microsofts strategy around the platform is whats more intriguing to me than the actual platform itself.

The actual Community Technology Preview (CTP) 1 bits are somewhat dull. As one developer I know said: Its ADO.NET Sync Services plus FAT/NTFS file sync, Ray Ozzies Simple Sharing Extensions (SSE) for peer-to-peer sync of RSS/Atom feeds, and some arm-waving about custom data synchronization.

Here are a few tidbits about the sync framework that I did find interesting, however...

Push Gmail available on iPhone thanks to Google Sync update

One of the complaints that Apple commonly receives about its iPhone is that push email services are not available for Gmail, whereas they are for MobileMe, the paid service from the company, as well as Yahoo! Mail. Whilst the Cupertino-based company still hasn't done anything to resolve this issue, Google certainly has, and it used Microsoft in the process to do so. According to the Google Mobile blog, you can now get Push services for Gmail, thanks to an updated Google Sync. Though this is great news for some, it's not as simple and straightforward as it sounds.

Apple locks the Palm Pre out of iTunes

When Palm announced that the Pre would sync with iTunes by spoofing its identity it was only a matter of time until Apple stopped this practice. With the latest iTunes update 8.2.1 syncing with the Pre no longer functions according to Businessweek.com. It should not come as a surprise that Apple stopped supporting the device as it only wants authentic iPods and iPhones to be able to use their software. Palm did post a statement saying "Palm's media sync works with iTunes 8.2. If Apple chooses to disable media sync in iTunes, it will be a direct blow to their users who will be deprived of a seamless synchronization experience. However, people will have options.

If you're on the Chrome developer channel, you just got a new feature- bookmarks syncing.

Note that this only seems to be working for Windows users, according to TechCrunch:

"Bookmark management appears to have been temporarily disabled on the latest versions of Chromium for Mac, after they were first turned on last week. When they come back, hopefully this syncing will work for Macs as well. To stay up-to-date on the latest versions of Chromium for Mac, check out our updater tool."

iTunes update kills Pre syncing

Apple has updated its iTunes platform making the current version 9.0.2. While it does add some new support for the newly released Apple TV 3.0 software, the biggest news is that this update breaks the ability for the Palm Pre to sync with iTunes. The cat and mouse game has been going on since Palm announced that the Pre would have the ability to sync with iTunes, something Apple did not approve. The Pre is able to sync itself by spoofing iTunes into thinking that an iPod is attached. The less than ethical approach has been given mixed reviews as Palm is clearly using iTunes as a marketing push when it is not paying royalties to Apple.
