Both Symantec and McAfee are in an 'Arms Race' in the PC security market according to a report by The New York Times. McAfee has been trying

you include corporate and business use. Unfortunately, for McAfee, they've been facing a decade of legal and accounting problems that left it in
poor competitive shape, and employee morale low. Things aren't any better in the revenue department. Symantec made $1.8 billion in revenue
last year, compared to $624 million in revenue for McAfee. However, McAfee is fighting back.

06.09.2005Symantec says Chinese offer a success, withholds numbers
Symantec Corp. declared its
compensation offer for Chinese
users who saw their computers
damaged by a bad software
update a success Sunday, but
declined to say how many users
had accepted the deal.
Symantec ran into trouble
May 18, when the company
issued a faulty software
update for its Norton
antivirus software that
wrongly identified two system
files in the Simplified
Chinese edition of Windows XP
as malware, and quarantined
them. That blunder rendered an
estimated 50,000 Chinese PCs
unusable, Symantec said.
The incident provoked an
angry outcry from Chinese
users, who demanded
compensation for the damage
wrought on their systems by
Symantec. At least two users
filed lawsuits against
Symantec over damage done to
their PCs. ..

16.07.2007Symantec Sues Microsoft
It was bound to happen sooner
or later but security firm
Symantec is taking legal
action against Microsoft
accusing it of misusing its
technology the
BBC
reports.
Symantec is angry and
alleges that Microsoft
improperly used Symantec's
data storage techniques in its
own software. Symantec wants
compensation, saying the
alleged infringement amounts
to misappropriation of its
trade secrets.
The disagreement is based on
Symantec's Volume Manager
software, which allows
operating systems to store and
handle large amounts of
data.
Symantec
believes Microsoft has
"deliberately and
surreptitiously
misappropriated" the
technology "and thereby
convinced the US government to
issue patents to Microsoft
based on technologies invented
by Symantec".
Symantec is mostly known for
its corporate and home
anti-virus software that is
used widely across the
world.
Microsoft describes the
accusation as unfounded and
says it has tried
unsuccessfully to resolve the
issue.

15.05.2007Microsoft, Symantec settle Windows dispute
After nearly two years of litigation, Microsoft Corp. and Symantec Corp. have settled a dispute over data-storage technologies in Microsoft
products.
The suit, filed by Symantec in May 2006, alleged that Microsoft wrongly used Symantec's technology in programs including the
Windows Vista operating system. Symantec had acquired the technology in its purchase of storage company Veritas in 2005.
The companies
declined to disclose financial terms and other details of the settlement. Symantec and Microsoft on Tuesday requested to dismiss the suit in U.S.
District Court in Seattle.
Symantec's original suit, filed before Windows Vista's release, sought an injunction to "preclude the
further development, sale or distribution" of Windows Vista until the disputed technology was removed.

03.04.2008Symantec: Windows Vista less
Secure than XP
According to Symantec, Windows
Vista is very likely to be
less secure than Windows XP by
the time it comes out.
Symantec has supposedly
already found many security
flaws in Windows Vista's
networking code. Symantec also
says Vista's new code is what
is problematic.
According to the Symantec
report, "Microsoft has
removed a large body of tried
and tested code and replaced
it with freshly written code,
complete with new corner cases
and defects. This may provide
for a more stable networking
stack in the long term, but
stability will suffer in the
short term."
This is obviously surprising
for Microsoft employees, who
have declared so many times
that Vista would be more
secure than XP. Microsoft
answered by a simple
explanation that the software
is still in beta stage and
that numerous improvements
would be made until it comes
out.
