28.07.2009No Mac version of Madden '08 NFL, yet
EA chief technical officer
Bing Gordon said at Apple's
Worldwide Developers
Conference in June that the
company would simultaneously
release Madden '08 for both
Windows PCs and Macs when the
title went on sale last night.
However, as noted by
VNUnet,
the Mac version is nowhere to
be found.
Mac users have had to put
up with late-arriving game
titles for years, as game
studios have put their PC
gaming efforts around the
Windows platform, by far and
away the choice of serious PC
gamers. But with the
company's switch to Intel
processors and the growing
number of Macs out in the
wild, it seemed that Mac
gaming had turned a corner
with Gordon's endorsement.
Not yet,
apparently. Other Mac sites
such as Inside Mac Games noted
the frustrations of Mac users
who still haven't yet seen
copies of Harry Potter and the
Order of the Phoenix and
Battlefield 2142, two games
promised by Gordon for a July
release during Apple's
developer conference...

13.11.2008DTV likely delayed till June 12
The Senate Republicans and Obama have been pushing the need to keep analog signals online instead of switching all television transmissions to
digital, to free up wireless spectrum, meaning that we could see a delay in the switch. It would seem after reports of the delay, and with the FCC
backing to prevent the switch, it is likely the Senate will postpone it. A new bill has been presented to delay the switch of DTV till June 12, 2009
because too many Americans, up to 6.5 million households, are not prepared for the switch. The original bill was passed by Congress in 2005,
mandating that the switch would be February 17, 2009.

12.06.2007How Vista screws dual-booting
nirvana
Declan Kennedy at APC Magazine
has written an interesting
analysis looking at
Microsoft's suspicious
lack of advancement in OS boot
technique.
Put
simply, Vista will still
overwrite the master boot
record with no regard for any
other boot loader that may be
present.
But
Kennedy also describes how,
with the right boot loader
configuration, you can setup a
dual-boot system that allows
you to switch between Windows
and Linux without having to
reboot either OS, using
hibernation.
His
observations open up
interesting possibilities for
Mac users too. Boot Camp would
be considerably more useful if
it didn't involve closing
all applications and fully
restarting the system each
time. If it were just a case
of sleeping one OS to switch
to the other, it'd be the
next best thing to perfect
virtualisation. Will Apple
implement this in time for
Panther?..

03.09.2006Windows DreamScene coming soon on Ultimate
Windows Vista Ultimate users
began to receive the first set
of "Ultimate Extras". But
arguably the most anticipated
Ultimate Extra was not there
-- Windows DreamScene.
Windows client
director, Jeff Putt has
confirmed that this extra will
not be available in its final
form immediately after launch.
However, a technology preview
may be coming soon for Windows
Vista Ultimate users who want
to give it a try.
Windows DreamScene enables
users to use looping
high-definition video content
(MPEG, WMV) as an animated
wallpaper. Thanks to the new
3D accelerated desktop in
Windows Vista, the animated
wallpaper uses virtually no
CPU (just a little for
decoding the video).
Microsoft demonstrated
Windows DreamScene yesterday
at the launch event which
showed Windows DreamScene
using an animated wallpaper
created by
Stardock
. The wallpaper they showed
will be available exclusively
at Neowin.net's partner site,
WinCustomize
.com, in February.
More information on
public availability for
Windows Vista Ultimate users
is expected soon.
