In part one of my comparison of Windows Vista Beta 1 and Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger," I looked at three key aspects of each system: Look and feel, desktop search, and data visualization and organization. For the most part, OS X came out well ahead of Windows Vista, as you'd expect, since it's a polished finished product. Vista, meanwhile, is all knees and elbows, an awkward teenager on its way to maturity.
. Microsoft will iron out the details, I'm sure, but the end result will likely not change much. Specifically, OS X will always be elegant, and Windows will almost certainly lag behind in the fit and finish department. The only questions are how much Vista will improve when compared to previous Windows versions, and whether it will be enough to keep customers from moving to OS X.

technique.
Put
simply, Vista will still
overwrite the master boot
record with no regard for any

Kennedy also describes how,
with the right boot loader
configuration, you can setup a
dual-boot system that allows
you to switch between Windows
and Linux without having to
reboot either OS, using
hibernation.
His
observations open up
interesting possibilities for
Mac users too. Boot Camp would
be considerably more useful if
it didn't involve closing
all applications and fully
restarting the system each
time. If it were just a case
of sleeping one OS to switch
to the other, it'd be the
next best thing to perfect
virtualisation. Will Apple
implement this in time for
Panther?..

for Chris Pirillo, but something happened when Microsoft talked up Longhorn and eventually shipped Vista. Chris was enraged most of the time because
the promise of "Longhorn 2003" never happened, and I think he probably feels that Microsoft cheated themselves, and him out of a worthwhile upgrade.
Ever since, he hasn't involved himself in Microsoft (lab) events and has become quite outspoken against Windows Vista.

Nearly half of businesses are in some phase of preparing to update desktops to Windows Vista, with small businesses moving the fastest to implement
the OS, according to a xreport released last week. The number of organizations evaluating and testing Vista increased from 29 percent in February 2007
to 48 percent by early November 2007, found the report, commissioned by reseller CDW and based on information collected by Walker Information from 772
IT decision makers. Moreover, about 35 percent of companies are currently implementing or have implemented Vista already, compared to 12 percent last
February, the report said. The report is the third of a wave of reports on Vista adoption that CDW has done since the OS was in its final testing
phases in October 2006. In the latest phase of release, which tracked Vista adoption from October 31 until Nov. 7, 2007, small businesses comprised 53
percent of those companies either using or evaluating Vista. The higher-education segment came in second, with 49 percent reporting that they are
evaluating or using the OS, while medium-to-large businesses were third, with 48 percent.

21.01.2008Another CNet Blogger Says No to Vista (SP1)
Those guys over at CNet really have it in for Vista, this time it's Robert Vamosi suggesting that users that are waiting for SP1 to make the switch
will be disappointed. In all fairness it lacks the flair of the SP2 release on Windows XP which came with new features such as a new Internet Explorer
version and several security enhancements. SP1 for Vista is no more than a roll up package of everything released on Windows Update until now.
What Robert fails to mention is that a few
performance
enhancements are also included in the update that significantly speed up the OS and are only available through Microsoft Downloads, which requires
the Windows Genuine Advantage Check. Service Pack 2 for XP was a one-off, due to the repeated set backs of Vista, Microsoft were forced to include
technologies already planned for Windows Vista, before SP2 Microsoft stressed time and time again that Service Packs usually do not offer new
features.
SP1 will be a welcome update for those that opted to switch when Vista became available, performance and reliability have always
been a talking point from the very beginning and I am confident that SP1 fixes those issues (even for those that have already
applied the updates)

Throughout 2007, according to reports by Net Applications, Mac OS increased its market share by 3.15% while Vista managed to grab 10.48% market share.
Windows XP lost 8.39% of the OS market share in the same time period, quite unsurprising considering Vista is its successor, while Linux increased by
0.26%. Nothing too mind-boggling, but definitely interesting, to say the least. At the end of December 2007, the (incomplete) standings are as
follows:
Windows XP - 76.91%
Windows Vista - 10.48%
Mac OS - 7.30%

Microsoft Windows Vista. And, it seems the future of Windows is ... XP?
Vista? What Vista? One year after Vistas release, just 2
percent of respondents said the OS is the primary desktop OS at their company. A whopping 92 percent said Windows XP was the primary desktop OS.
And it seems that enterprises are planning on sticking with what they have for the foreseeable future: 72 percent of respondents
said that the OS theyre currently using is the one they expect to be using in 2009. Looks like XP has a longer life than Microsoft plannedor

limits the program's
functionality once activation
has been bypassed a certain
number of times.
But now Microsoft's
intentions are clear: Just as
it is doing with Vista,
Microsoft plans to incorporate
what basically amounts to a
'kill switch' into Office
2007. Office 2007 users who
can't or won't pass
activation muster within a set
time period will be moved into

testing the Lenovo X300 with hopes of comparing it to Apple's MacBook Air. The review never saw the light of day but the testing was mostly complete.
Obviously the X300 doesn't run OS X, but the MacBook Air can run Windows so I compared battery life between the two under Vista, which yielded some

With dissatisfaction over the Vista operating system persistent, can Microsoft right the OS's wrongs with its upcoming Vista service pack?
Microsoft made the latest beta of Vista SP1 available to the public earlier this month, and after informally testing it for a couple of days, I find
my PC is working more reliably--and some tasks especially file copying, take less time. But I was hoping for more out of SP1, such as bigger system
performance gains and fixes for Vista annoyances including the oft-criticized User Account Control feature.
And if you are waiting for
major improvements to switch to Vista, you'd better hope that Microsoft's SP1 development team goes into overdrive before the service
pack's official release and gives you more compelling reasons to make the jump to the OS. Vista undergoes no major overhaul with the SP1 release I
looked at.

so-called "kill switch" is designed to prevent users with illegal copies of Vista from using certain features.
But the tool has
suffered from glitches since it was introduced with many Windows users claiming that legal copies of Vista had been disabled. Microsoft says its
efforts have seen a drop in piracy of its software. In a statement released by the company, Microsoft corporate vice president Mike Sievert, said:
"Users whose systems are identified as counterfeit will be presented with clear and recurring notices about the status of their system and how to
get genuine copies."

After almost 3 years since Microsoft released Windows Vista, we are now heading for a wonderful release of Windows 7, the next version of Windows OS.
Windows 7 RC is expected to be released next month, April 10th. But, what about the next version of Windows OS? Let us call it Windows 8 for now.
Soni Meinke, a senior program manager in the Windows Server group in an interview with Channel 9 revealed very little info that the next version of
Windows OS is already in its planning stage and her work being engaging with various customers and partners, she is already discussing the plan and
strategy around them.

12.03.2009Apparently Microsoft Windows XP Is Far From Dead
At the latest budget meeting
they "fine tuned the Vista/XP
mix". This means that they
are expecting to make more
money off of the ostracized OS
than they had first predicted.
Initial expectations were of
an 85/15 split between Vista
and XP respectively. The new
numbers reflect a noticeably
higher number, 78/22.
Here's to hoping that
Microsoft realizes they have a
pretty good OS already, and
that all the eye-candy isn't
a good enough trade off for
the usability of XP. Maybe
they will change their mind
about the XP retailer sales
cut-off date that is quickly
approaching.
I for
one will cling dearly to my
precious copies of Windows XP,
I may begin venturing out and
exploring other operating
systems, but a lot is going to
have to change before I switch
to Vista.
