18.12.2006Bermuda to Put RFID in All Vehicles on Island
This month, Bermuda's
Transport Control Department,
a division of the tiny string
of island's Ministry of
Tourism, plans an island-wide
deployment of electronic
vehicle registration made up
of RFID tags, antennas,
readers and a database system.
Over the next five years, the
program is expected to
generate over $11 million
in lost fees from unlicensed
and uninsured vehicles.
A unique
identification number will be
established for each vehicle
registered on the island; each
number is then linked to a
record in a centralized
vehicle database. As car
owners have their vehicles
inspected or registered they
will receive a
tamper-resistant windshield
sticker embedded with an RFID
tag which, when read by a
specially equipped RFID
reader, will send off
information in encrypted code
to TCD's database where it is
linked to a record in the
vehicle database.
The vehicle database itself
identifies vehicles, and the
EVR system retains only photo
images of non-compliant or
criminal vehicles. A
back-office violation
processing system will
automatically generate
citations, while the EVR
system itself will validate
commercial vehicle
registration and issue
violations. Bermuda will also
receive a network of fixed
reader points that will verify
vehicle registration and
compliance. In sting-like
operations transportable,
tripod-mounted readers and
handheld readers will be used
for screening vehicles at
random locations. In addition
to tracking down errant
registration and vehicle
inspections, the system will
automate emissions and
insurance compliance as well.
3M, which develops vehicle
registration systems, is
designing and implementing
Bermuda's RFID-based system.

06.11.2008Apple recalls iPhone 3G power adapter
Apple has issued a recall for the iPhone 3G USB power adapter due to a flaw with can cause the metal clips to break off inside of the outlet. The
adapters were supplied with iPhone 3Gs sold in the United States, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Peru.
In addition the adapters were sold as standalone accessories in Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, and Panama.
The USB power adapters supplied
with the original iPhone are not affected by this recall.
Due to a risk of electric shock, Apple has encouraged customers to discontinue
use of the faulty adapter until their new adapters arrive. Users are encouraged to charge their phone by connecting to their computers or using a
standard-sized USB power adapter if they have one.
Replacement adapters will begin shipping starting October 10 to users who register at
Apple's website, or you can wait and exchange your adapter at an Apple store
starting that same day. You will need your iPhone's serial number to complete the registration, but once registered Apple will send you the
replacement adapter and packaging to send your old adapter back to Apple.
Apple reports this flaw has only affected a small number of users
and no injuries have been reported.

20.09.2008Microsoft Officially Opens @live.com Email Registration
Microsoft has officially opened the much anticipated and well overdue registration for the new @live.com email addresses. This minor update along with
the rest of wave 2 of Microsoft’s Windows Live Suite allows users to now fully take advantage of Windows Live. Microsoft should have opened
registration to the @live.com acronym when the company first started Windows Live, but nonetheless this is a welcome change. The company now gives
users a change and the ability to get away from the old "Hotmail" acronym and finally puts their email service in-line with the rest of the
Windows Live Suite.

17.07.2008Android Market to open to any app Monday
The Android Market currently has about 50 applications, but that number should go up next week when Google opens the market to developers. Starting on
Monday, any developer will be able to register for $25 and upload their application to the market. The registration and fee will help make sure
that "each developer is authenticated and responsible for their apps," Google's Eric Chu wrote in a blog post on Thursday.
The first
phone running Google's Android software, the G1, went on sale on Wednesday from T-Mobile in the United States. It costs $180 with a two-year
contract.

23.10.2008Acer to surpass Dell as the second biggest PC company
Dell has long been a massive player in the computer retailing industry, second only to Hewlett-Packard (or HP to you youngsters), but it appears that
they're about to be surpassed by someone quite unexpected. That's right; according to the NY Times (registration required), Acer is set up to
become the second biggest PC vendor on the planet. This is surprising for a number of reasons. Firstly, Acer is based in Taiwan; they'll be the
first non-US manufacturer to reach that high in US sales, as Dell and HP are both firmly American. PC industry analyst and president of a consultancy
named Endpoint Technologies Associates, Roger Kay, stated, "That is a big achievement, and they have beaten the odds.
