Office 12 to Feature 'Super Tooltips'

Tooltips, those little yellow popup boxes that provide information on a button or menu option, have become an indispensable part of the modern user interface. Now, Microsoft is looking to extend their usefulness by introducing what it calls "Super Tooltips" in the upcoming release of Office 12.

The next-generation Office suite from Microsoft is already slated to bring a major UI makeover. Standard toolbars have been replaced with task-oriented "Ribbons" that include features pertinent to the current job. But such a change will require a learning curve, which is where the new larger tooltips come in.

Cray Computer Founder Joins Microsoft

Microsoft confirmed on Friday that Burton Smith, formerly the chief scientist for Cray, would be joining the company as a technical fellow. Smith will work to expand Microsoft's efforts in parallel and high-performance computing, and would report to chief technical officier Craig Mundie.

Smith had worked with Cray since its inception as Tera Computer Co. in 1988. He has also published several works on issues regarding parallel computing. "As microprocessor technology continues to evolve over the next decade or so, we're going to see the capabilities of a supercomputer cluster on the desktop which will require a different software architecture," Mundie said. "Burton will be investigating how to develop software to benefit from the opportunities which multi-core multiprocessors will present."

Apple Without the 'Computer:' Life with iPhone

On Tuesday morning in San Francisco, Apple did something it had never done before. In 1976, it basically created the personal computer industry; if it had ever come into fruition without Apple, the computer today would probably be unrecognizable, and maybe even unlikable. In 2001, the company essentially invented the portable digital music industry, even though MP3 players existed prior to 2001, and personal computers of some sort existed prior to 1976...

Canon wants You at the Super Bowl

Canon U.S.A. Incorporated, the "Official Camera of the NFL" since 1984, has announced the launch of a Super Bowl sweepstakes. An advertisement promoting the sweepstakes which will award one lucky winner at random (I wish the odds were a tad better than that) a trip for two to Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa Bay in 2009, will begin appearing on January 14, both online and in print. Canon, the longest-tenured sponsor of the NFL, has lined the football sidelines for years with both high-definition TV camera lenses and the white lenses used by professional photographers covering the game.

Experimental Super 3G network could reach 300Mbps

Japan-based NTT DoCoMo announced today that it plans to begin testing on an experimental "Super 3G" system for extra-high-speed data on mobile devices.

The country's largest mobile carrier said that it hopes to achieve an impressive 300Mbps down in its tests over the wireless network. The company has already begun accepting proposals from suppliers and hopes to implement the Super 3G system in Japan by 2009.

The company said that it planned to start experimenting with Super 3G in an indoor setting with only one transmitting antenna and one receiving antenna. From there, NTT DoCoMo plans to expand the experiment by using four Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) antennas on both the transmitting and receiving side. The ultimate goal will be not only to achieve 300Mbps down but also to look at how well handovers will be handled between towers.

Camera tech behind the Super Bowl

The Super Bowl is one of the largest sporting events on earth. It attracts hundreds of millions of viewers each year and even more dollars will be spent on advertising. Have you ever wondered what kind of technology is behind the curtains to make it all possible? This year NBC is leaving no inch of the field uncovered. First off there will be "400 on-site production and engineering personnel" and they have put down over 50 miles of fiber optic cable. There will be 35 high end Sony cameras using Cannon lenses to make sure every inch of game play is covered. Cameras will be placed on everything from goal posts to outside the locker-rooms.

EU Official: IP Addresses are Personal Information

IP addresses, string of numbers that identify computers on the Internet, should generally be regarded as personal information, the head of the European Union's group of data privacy regulators said Monday. Germany's data protection commissioner, Peter Scharr, leads the EU group preparing a report on how well the privacy policies of Internet search engines operated by Google Inc., Yahoo Inc., Microsoft Corp. and others comply with EU privacy law. He told a European Parliament hearing on online data protection that when someone is identified by an IP, or Internet protocol, address "then it has to be regarded as personal data." His view differs from that of Google, which insists an IP address merely identifies the location of a computer, not who the individual user is - something strictly true but which does not recognize that many people regularly use the same computer terminal and IP address.

Download Uproar: Record Industry Goes After Personal Use

Despite more than 20,000 lawsuits filed against music fans in the years since they started finding free tunes online rather than buying CDs from record companies, the recording industry has utterly failed to halt the decline of the record album or the rise of digital music sharing. But in an unusual case in which an Arizona recipient of an RIAA letter has fought back in court rather than write a check to avoid hefty legal fees, the industry is taking its argument against music sharing one step further: in legal documents in its federal case against Jeffrey Howell, a Scottsdale, Ariz., man who kept a collection of about 2,000 music recordings on his personal computer, the industry maintains that it is illegal for someone who has legally purchased a CD to transfer that music into his computer.

Surface used to coordinate Super Bowl Security

If you've been watching the news this week, you might have caught NFL security VP Milton Ahlerich saying that Raymond James Stadium in Tampa will be "one the safest locations you can possibly be" during the Super Bowl on Sunday, and it looks like Microsoft Surface will be a big reason why: it's being used to coordinate security forces around the site.

It's seriously slick -- maps are integrated with planning and voice communications software so the field commanders can immediately assess incident responses and personnel deployments, with the ability to initiate radio contact directly from the interface

Researchers Craft HDTV's Successor

High-definition TV may still be far from the norm in many countries, but that isn't stopping engineers at Japan's public broadcaster from pushing ahead with development of Super Hi-Vision, a system they hope will eventually replace HDTV. Last week engineers at NHK's (Nippon Hoso Kyokai) Science and Technical Research Laboratories showed off their most recent work on the technology.

A Super Hi-Vision (SHV) picture is made up of 4,320 horizontal picture lines and 7,680 vertical lines. That's four times the horizontal and vertical resolution of current HDTV or, put another way, a single Super Hi-Vision image is equivalent to 16 tiled HDTV screens.

In the year since it was last demonstrated, the company has developed an image sensor for use in TV cameras that can shoot an entire SHV screen...

Download the first 100 issues of Computer Gaming World free!

As some of you may or may not know, Computer Gaming World is dead. November's issue of CGW is the last issue ever for the magazine, at least with that name. In December's issue, the magazine relaunches with the new super cool name of Games for Windows: The Official Magazine. I posted about this story awhile back, but I saw this and thought, wow now that is way cool. Seems some of the editors decided to take the first 100 issues of CGW and put them in PDF format for everyone to download and enjoy. Now you can download the first 100 issues and read them all you want, but they also have every single magazine cover as well, though after issue 100 obviously there is no content besides the cover. I do not know if they plan on converting the rest of the issues and uploading them, but I assume eventually it will happen.   For those that have never heard of CGW, or aren't up to snuff with PC gaming magazines, Computer Gaming World was first launched back in November 1981. Since then they have published 268 issues, and they have seen every change that has ever happened in the PC gaming industry first hand. From the Atari to the Apple II all the way to current super high end rigs, they've seen it all, and covered it all. So if you are a fan of CGW, or if you are just interested in the wonderful history of PC gaming, check the issues out. Just be warned, if you want to download all 100 issues, be prepared for a rather long read.

Dells All-in-One PC Has the Guts, Design To Compete With iMac

Something interesting is going on at Dell. The Texas personal-computer behemoth, long associated with boxy, boring machines, has started emphasizing industrial design. And the company, which in recent years seemed to care only about corporate customers, techies and hard-core gamers, appears once again interested in average, mainstream consumers who value simplicity.

The most tangible example of this new approach is Dells XPS One desktop an elegant, handsome, cleverly designed one-piece computer. If it didnt have the Dell logo on it, the XPS One might be mistaken for a product of the PC industrys design leaders, Apple or Sony.
