Office 12 to Feature 'Super Tooltips'

Tooltips, those little yellow popup boxes that provide information on a button or menu option, have become an indispensable part of the modern user interface. Now, Microsoft is looking to extend their usefulness by introducing what it calls "Super Tooltips" in the upcoming release of Office 12.

The next-generation Office suite from Microsoft is already slated to bring a major UI makeover. Standard toolbars have been replaced with task-oriented "Ribbons" that include features pertinent to the current job. But such a change will require a learning curve, which is where the new larger tooltips come in.

Canon wants You at the Super Bowl

Canon U.S.A. Incorporated, the "Official Camera of the NFL" since 1984, has announced the launch of a Super Bowl sweepstakes. An advertisement promoting the sweepstakes which will award one lucky winner at random (I wish the odds were a tad better than that) a trip for two to Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa Bay in 2009, will begin appearing on January 14, both online and in print. Canon, the longest-tenured sponsor of the NFL, has lined the football sidelines for years with both high-definition TV camera lenses and the white lenses used by professional photographers covering the game.

Admin Pack replacement to be available for Vista after SP1 RTM

Two days ago Kevin Remde from Microsoft posted about there not being an Admin Pack that will run on Windows Vista for administering Windows Server 2008 servers. He did this after learning this from another blog, and during e-mail discussion threads. The recommendation was to use RDP (Terminal Services) instead. Fortunately, there is a group that is indeed building a replacement:

The final word was finally passed down from the group who are building a new tool to replace the Admin Pack for running on Vista, and I have received their permission to repeat it here. Here is the verbatim quote:

The new feature with codename Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT Client) for managing WS08 from Vista SP1 Business, Enterprise and Ultimate will be released as an OOB component shortly after Vista SP1 RTM. In the meantime, you can leverage the Admin Pack for managing WS03 servers remotely (Instructions Here: http://support.microsoft. com/kb/930056). The old Admin Pack will not work against WS08, though.

So.. that's good news! You can use the Admin Pack to manage WS03 servers, or you can use the new Remote Server Administration Tools (which I understand will be much like the ones added to "Longhorn" Beta 3) when they become available, on Vista SP1.

Should "Standard User" be the default in Windows 7?

Adrian Kingsley-Hughes: It seems clear to me that combining an Admin accounts with Windows 7’s “low nag” User Account Control (UAC) setting is a bad idea. Problem is, Admin accounts and “low nag” UAC settings will be the default for millions of people buying Windows 7-based PCs.

The problem with systems running with these two settings is that it’s possible to use a code-injection vulnerability to silently run code or other applications with administrative privileges behind the user’s back. Even Windows super-guru Mark Russinovich acknowledges that a problem exists...

Windows Live Custom Domains renamed to Admin Center - New features added

Windows Live Custom Domains has today undergone its Wave 2 update that sees it renamed as Windows Live Admin Center, though the old url of domains.live.com still works. This name change reflects the wider array of features now offered by the service, which has transitioned from a hosted email service into a more complete Windows Live package. The update now allows those who manage a domain to redirect a subdomain to a Windows Live Space, a Windows Live Map of a location you specifiy, a Live Search page complete with custom macros or even a customised live.com page. Experimental Super 3G network could reach 300Mbps

Japan-based NTT DoCoMo announced today that it plans to begin testing on an experimental "Super 3G" system for extra-high-speed data on mobile devices.

The country's largest mobile carrier said that it hopes to achieve an impressive 300Mbps down in its tests over the wireless network. The company has already begun accepting proposals from suppliers and hopes to implement the Super 3G system in Japan by 2009.

The company said that it planned to start experimenting with Super 3G in an indoor setting with only one transmitting antenna and one receiving antenna. From there, NTT DoCoMo plans to expand the experiment by using four Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) antennas on both the transmitting and receiving side. The ultimate goal will be not only to achieve 300Mbps down but also to look at how well handovers will be handled between towers.

Camera tech behind the Super Bowl

The Super Bowl is one of the largest sporting events on earth. It attracts hundreds of millions of viewers each year and even more dollars will be spent on advertising. Have you ever wondered what kind of technology is behind the curtains to make it all possible? This year NBC is leaving no inch of the field uncovered. First off there will be "400 on-site production and engineering personnel" and they have put down over 50 miles of fiber optic cable. There will be 35 high end Sony cameras using Cannon lenses to make sure every inch of game play is covered. Cameras will be placed on everything from goal posts to outside the locker-rooms.

Surface used to coordinate Super Bowl Security

If you've been watching the news this week, you might have caught NFL security VP Milton Ahlerich saying that Raymond James Stadium in Tampa will be "one the safest locations you can possibly be" during the Super Bowl on Sunday, and it looks like Microsoft Surface will be a big reason why: it's being used to coordinate security forces around the site.

It's seriously slick -- maps are integrated with planning and voice communications software so the field commanders can immediately assess incident responses and personnel deployments, with the ability to initiate radio contact directly from the interface

Researchers Craft HDTV's Successor

High-definition TV may still be far from the norm in many countries, but that isn't stopping engineers at Japan's public broadcaster from pushing ahead with development of Super Hi-Vision, a system they hope will eventually replace HDTV. Last week engineers at NHK's (Nippon Hoso Kyokai) Science and Technical Research Laboratories showed off their most recent work on the technology.

A Super Hi-Vision (SHV) picture is made up of 4,320 horizontal picture lines and 7,680 vertical lines. That's four times the horizontal and vertical resolution of current HDTV or, put another way, a single Super Hi-Vision image is equivalent to 16 tiled HDTV screens.

In the year since it was last demonstrated, the company has developed an image sensor for use in TV cameras that can shoot an entire SHV screen...

Program Names govern admin rights in Vista

Developers have discovered that the name given to a Vista executable affects whether or not it will require admin rights to run. Security experts said the feature might seem odd, but helps to catch out spyware. Reg Reader Mike, a C++ developer, discovered the behaviour after spending days trying to work out why just some of his projects required elevation (admin rights) to be run on his Windows Vista machine. To his disbelief, Mike realised that the different properties were simply due to projects being named differently.

"If Vista sees that you have created a Microsoft Visual C++ project with install in the project name, then that .exe will automatically require Admin Rights to run. Create exactly the same project, but call it, say, Fred, and the problem disappears," he explained. "Vista's security isn't just concerned with what an .exe is doing to your PC, but what it's actually called."
