Diablo III Hints?

Thanks to Shacknews for the heads up.

Diablo III is one of those games that most people assume has to be in development, but has still yet to be announced. Now, several Blizzard and Diablo fan sites have hosted an online chat interview with Diablo novelization author Richard A. Knaak containing numerous tidbits suggesting that a third main game in Blizzard's acclaimed hack and slash RPG series is on the way. Some choice quotes:

Q - Medievaldragon: How much of the book is creation of yours, and how involved is Chris Metzen behind the canon storyline of Diablo: The Sin War Trilogy? Do you think the ramifications of this book impact in the storyline of Diablo 3 the game?

A - Knaak: This is a pure collaboration between myself and Chris/Blizzard. All that is written is passed by him and the others there. This will be canon and has adjusted earlier info. The ramifications here will be used for any future project...and I ain't writing for a dead game.

Q - Deathshade|EU: So... Diablo 3?

A - Knaak: I am not writing for a dead world...but a world with dead. nuff said

Sweet, Diablo III. Now all we need is Starcraft II and Warcraft IV!

ArchLord Goes Free To Play (With a catch though)

Thanks to Bluesnews for the scoop.

ArchLord, the MMORPG from Codemasters which almost across the board got horrible reviews, will go "Free To Play" starting January 4th, 2007. But there is a catch - you still have to buy the game. Now normally, like in the case of Guild Wars that isn't such a big deal - right? Well in ArchLords case, I think the reviews of the game speak for themselves pretty well. I'm not trying to badmouth the game, in fact I was probably one of the only beta testers who had some fun playing the game. But who am I to argue this, I mean heck it is going to be free to play once you buy the game now, so kudos to Codemasters there I suppose. Here is the Codemasters little press blurb on the move to Free To Play for ArchLord:

Codemasters Online Gaming is pleased to announce that ArchLord will be going Free To Play on January 4 2007.

ArchLord will continue to be fully supported, including the second fantastic update Episode II: Season of Siege. However, players will now be able to access all this great content simply by buying the box; after that it's free!

Over the next few days all those playing ArchLord will be receiving emails updating them of the changes and how they will be affected. Visit the website at www.archlordgame.com /freetoplay to find out more information on how the changes affect you.

If you want to discuss ArchLord going free to play, or anything else to do with ArchLord be sure to visit the forums. http://community.cod emasters.com/forum/forumdispla y.php?f=336

That's right, ArchLord now has no monthly fee. Buy the game and that's it! Get out there and buy a box and be prepared to take part in some mass PvP action.

So there you have it, ArchLord goes free in a short few weeks here, and hopefully they will get some more players now. I always hate to see an MMORPG fail, and ArchLord is no different in that regard. Who knows, maybe some of you will give it a shot!

More Intel "Tigerton" Demonstrations

It has been reported that Intel's server platform, Caneland, features a point-to-point connection between chipsets and processors. This new feature allows the processors to be grouped together. In the Caneland system, four Tigertron processors are installed for a total of sixteen cores.

Supporting the four Tigerton processors is Intel's upcoming Clarksboro chipset. The upcoming chipset appears to dissipate plenty of heat and is shown with a fairly large all copper active cooled heat sink. Intel also demonstrated the performance of its Caneland system with POV-Ray Raytracing Rendering tests. The benchmark showed Tigerton delivering performance improvements greater than 16 times with the multi-threaded benchmark compared to the single-thread benchmark.

It is unknown what the system configuration and clock speeds of the demo systems were. Nevertheless, Tigerton lives and is expected next year.

Packaging revealed for Windows Vista and Office 2007

Special thanks to Neowinian trekkie. for posting this in Back Page News, and Googler24022 for submitting this news to us.

Microsoft today revealed the retail packaging for Windows Vista and Office 2007, the eagerly awaited new products to be made widely available in early 2007.  The boxes boast a completely revised and redesigned packaging. Writing on the Windows Vista Team Blog, Nick White said:

"Designed to be user-friendly, the new packaging is a small, hard, plastic container that's designed to protect the software inside for life-long use. It provides a convenient and attractive place for you to permanently store both discs and documentation.

The new design will provide the strength, dimensional stability and impact resistance required when packaging software today. Our plan is to extend this packaging style to other Microsoft products after the launch of Windows Vista and 2007 Office system."

Keep reading for a glimpse of the designs for yourself.

Siemens Raided on Suspicions of Embezzlement, Bribery

Reports have shown that police and prosecutors have raided Siemens AG in Munich and Erlangen, Germany. The raid is a part of an investigation into acts of fraud suspected at the company's fixed networks business. Siemens AG, the world's largest electronics company was raided by approximately 200 police, prosecutors and tax inspectors at around 30 locations, some of them private homes. Police have already arrested five Siemens employees as part of an investigation into embezzlement and possible bribery at the company.

A total of ten Siemens employees, which included top executives Michael Kutschenreuter and Andy Mattes, and two other non-Siemens workers are still undergoing investigation for involvement in €20 million (USษ.5 million) to front companies and bank accounts in Switzerland and Liechtenstein, according to German publication Spiegel.

"Whether and to which degree these funds were used for paying bribes must still to be investigated," said Munich< /st1:place> senior prosecutor Christian Schmidt-Sommerfeld. "Three of the suspects have already made comprehensive statements."

Reports say that company executives created a secret slush fund with the purpose of paying bribes to secure contracts, customers and design-wins. The tactic, though illegal, is not uncommon in tech companies and may lead the way for several other investigations of the same manner.

Running With Scissors Postal 3 Interview

How have you felt about the response to the series from the media, and censorship bodies?

In the early days I was totally surprised, I mean we had the US Government taking us to court, we had Sen. Lieberman calling us out on the US Senate floor, not to mention endless groups calling for our castration. But I'm really glad how, over time, most our of early critics have come to realize that we really are about mature humor, and not reckless violence. The only thing that still drives me nuts is when a critic or reviewer actually tells me they haven't played Postal, or even seen it, and they go on and write a negative or misleading story or uneducated review.

Why have you decided to go with Valve's Source engine for the third game, rather than continuing to use the Unreal engine?

We believe that the Source engine will be a much better fit for the type of game that Postal III will be.

Why have you decided to bring the series to the console market, and what do you think this will add to the game?

We've always wanted to bring Postal to console. You have to remember that Running With Scissors is a small indie studio, and we operate like a club, so it made sense for us to find the right partner, and I'm very glad that we're now working with Akella. Clearly, Source and Xbox 360 are the basis and key motivators in our design and overall direction for Postal III. One thing we will be offering is multiplayer right from the start - it won't be an add-on.

Harry Potter style newspapers to become a reality

We are probably all aware of what a Harry Potter style newspaper looks like (The Daily Prophet). Moving images on the page, playing out a newsworthy scene or a wanted poster. Such newspapers are surely that of fantasy, right? Not according to BBC News. Appearing in the September 18th editions of Entertainment Weekly in Los Angeles and New York, slim-line screens will be embedded into the printed pages to offer video in these paper magazines. The technology is similar to that of singing greeting cards, as the chips that store the video (up to 40 minutes worth) are activated upon a page turn.

The unique result of their collaboration is a laptop design that screams chic, featuring Ultrasuede to deliver a unique and luxurious personal touch to mobile computing, along with the performance, mobility and wireless computing capabilities provided by Intel Centrino mobile technology.

They feature ultra micro-fiber Ultrasuede fabric integrated directly into the casing of Intel Centrino mobile technology-based laptop PCs, changing not only the look but also the feel of the system. Intel Centrino mobile technology trims weight off a traditional laptop PC and provides wireless communications features with great battery life, while the unique Ultrasuede design appeals to consumers??? sense of style, providing a sophisticated, personalized approach to tote-able, go-everywhere technology.

The CSS Corner: Alternate Style Sheets

As publishing and layout standards for web documents, HTML 4.01 and CSS 2.1 define relatively few user experience requirements for browsers. One of them, however, mandates the ability for end users to switch among a set of mutually exclusive document styles defined by the author. This feature is known as alternate style sheets. Significantly, the end user must also be able to turn off all styling.

Unfortunately, Internet Explorer did not expose this feature in the user interface until IE8 Beta 2...

Updated "Unofficial" System Requirements For Crysis

Crysis-Online has the "unofficial" updated minimum and recommended system requirements for the upcoming mega-smash hit Crytek masterpiece Crysis. Wow, that's a mouthful eh? Check these out.

Minimum Requirements
  • CPU - Athlon 64 3000+/Intel 2.8 Ghz
  • Video - Nvidia 6200 or Ati X1300 - Shader Model 2.0
  • RAM - 768 MB on Windows XP or 1 GB on Windows Vista
  • HDD - 6 GB
  • Internet - 256k+
  • Optical Drive - DVD
  • Software - Direct X 9.0c with Windows XP
Recommended Requirements
  • CPU - Dual Core CPU - Either Athlon X2 or Intel Pentium D
  • Video - Nvidia 7600GT or ATI X1800GTO - Shader Model 3.0 or DX10 Equivalent
  • RAM - 1.5GB+
  • HDD - 6GB
  • Internet - 512k+ - 128k Upstream
  • Optical Drive - DVD
  • Software - Direct X 9.0c with Windows XP
Also of note from the report are a couple of other things. Mainly that Crysis will run on both DX9 and DX10 and on Windows Vista and Windows XP. A video card supporting Shader Model 2.0 is the minimum, period. Don't bother with anything less. The CryEngine 2 as its called, can scale back quite a bit, around 2 years according to Crysis-Online, and scale ahead around 1.5 years or so. Crysis will utilize multi threaded CPU's which means the game will support Quad Core processors. A single Geforce 7800GTX will be able to pretty much max out the game.

Now remember, these are not confirmed specs, but I wouldn't doubt they are pretty accurate at this point. Time to upgrade the old PC folks?

F.E.A.R. Extraction Point Final Wrap

Francis Choi the associate producer of F.E.A.R. Extraction Point, the expansion to F.E.A.R. updated his blog over at IGN and let us know what's been going on:

There hasn't been much time passed since Tim's last blog was posted about how we're at full speed so there isn't too much to write up on, especially since we've come to a close and the answer is no, we didn't just finish the expansion in a week's time. In terms of an actual update on the F.E.A.R. Extraction Point, now we're done and the only things left to do is continue to help promote the game, so we've actually slowed down quite a bit.

But it's good to have this much needed rest though after juggling the task of finishing the game as well as going on trips to help support the product in the PR sense. In the closing weeks of the project I was sent off to show F.E.A.R. Extraction Point to the European press over in Leipzig as well as go off to Dallas for another event, all while leaving Tim to do all the heavy lifting of actually finishing the game. Both were really great events where I had an opportunity to talk with the fans of the original product and see how excited they were to see the expansion pack as well as the 360 version of F.E.A.R.

My highlight of these events has to be getting the opportunity to meet the guys that run one of the longest standing F.E.A.R. fansites, and if allowed, here's a quick plug http://www.fearhq.co m/ . These moderators have been running the site ever since they saw the E3 video from 2004 and have been supporting the game in as many ways as they possibly can, running contests and hosting as many files as they possibly can. Their support really has been second to none and it was great to see that Vivendi paid their way to the Games Convention. It's hard to count the number of copies that they have sold through their support, so paying their way is the least we could do. But getting the chance to meet them again was awesome as these guys are diehard fans of the game and I was very happy to show them what we've been working on since the release of F.E.A.R. and even happier that they liked what they played back then.
