Office Genuine Advantage (OGA), Now Mandatory

If you don't like the mandatory anti-piracy checks that Microsoft now enforces for Windows, brace yourself. The Microsoft Office productivity and collaboration suite is about to get a similar program.

The company's Office Genuine Advantage (OGA) program will require mandatory validation of Office software starting October 27, the software vendor quietly disclosed today. After that date, any Office Online templates downloaded from within the Office 2007 Microsoft Office System applications will require validation of legitimacy.

Similarly, starting in January, users of Office Update will have to validate the legitimacy of their Office software before they can use the service, Microsoft added.

Users absolutely hated the first iteration of the Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) program, and their protests pressured the company into revising it about a year after it launched in July 2005.

Microsoft said in a press statement that the validation process will be "quick and simple" for users. The OGA program, currently in the testing phase, is now available in 26 languages worldwide. OGA is a sibling program to WGA; both automatically check a user's version of Microsoft software to ensure it is not counterfeit or pirated.

WGA and OGA Servers Down

According to Ars Technica, the servers responsible for activating new installs of Windows and Office are currently down due to an unspecified reason. The issue became apparent after several users attempted to activate Office 2003 with no avail, even as early as this morning, and a Microsoft representative confirmed that the servers were offline. Fortunately, this seems to be simply a case of prolonged downtime, rather than an actual activation error, as was this case in August of last year, when the Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) software acidentally labelled legitimate installs as pirated versions. Users affected by this issue can still take advantage of the built-in 30-day grace period until the servers are brought back up.

Microsoft to add the Genuine Advantage ‘nag' to Office

Microsoft is set to begin a pilot of a new Genuine Advantage anti-piracy mechanism for Office that will add a “nag-like” feature, akin to what is now part of Windows Vista, to Office.

Office already currently includes an Office Genuine Advantage (OGA) validation mechanism (for Office XP and Office 2007), but Microsoft doesn’t do a whole lot to “punish” those it deems to be running non-Genuine versions of Office. However, as part of a new OGA notifications pilot program — which Microsoft is launching in Chile, Italy, Spain and Turkey, according to an April 8 announcement buried in a Q&A on Microsoft’s Web site — Microsoft is set to turn up the unpleasantness a notch.

Is Microsoft 'capable' of stopping Vista Capable lawsuit?

Microsoft would dearly love the Vista Capable lawsuit to just go away, but once the wheels of justice start grinding, can any amount of grease stop the squeaky wheel?

Microsofts Vista Capable class action lawsuit is in the news again, this time because Microsoft wants an appeals court to reverse the decision to have granted the case official ˜class action status.

The whole situation bubbled up because a number of consumers felt duped by the Vista Capable sticker that implied a computer with such a label would be able to run Vista, presumably at least the ˜Home Premium version of Vista with the fancy Aero graphics, instead of the Vista Home Basic version which had no such capability.

Microsoft Announces Use of HDi Logo by Toshiba and Major Hollywood Studios

Microsoft Corp. today announced that its trademarked HDi(TM) logo will soon appear on all Toshiba HD DVD players. In addition, Universal Studios Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Entertainment will include the HDi logo on packaging for HD DVD movie titles beginning in the fourth quarter of this year.

HDi technology is Microsoft's high-performance implementation of the interactivity layer for the HD DVD format, which has taken the movie-viewing experience to an entirely new level with such advanced features as network connectivity and community scenarios. HDi is also a trademark of Microsoft, as recognized by the United States Patent and Trademark Office in its July 2007 notice of allowance for trademark.

As Microsoft's implementation of the mandatory interactive layer in HD DVD, defined as Advanced Navigation by the DVD Forum, HDi immediately began delivering unprecedented and unique experiences for consumers when it was launched in April 2006. Early movie titles such as "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift," "Miami Vice" and "Mission: Impossible III" received immediate acclaim for their interactive HD DVD experiences -- from picture-in-picture director's commentary to graphical interfaces with tailored movie specifications -- all available without stopping the movie playback experience...

No fix for data corruption bug in Windows Home Server

Two months after acknowledging a serious data corruption bug exists in Windows Home Server, Microsoft has admitted it still has no fix. The latest update to its knowledgebase entry essentially says, "still workin' on it". The bug relates to a little known, but frequently used, method of writing hidden data to NTFS file systems, which is incompatible with the disk pooling strategy used in Home Server.

The software giant first acknowledged the problem on December 21 last year, providing a list of programs that could cause data on a Windows Home Server to become corrupted, including Windows Vista Photo Gallery, Windows Live Photo Gallery, OneNote 2007, OneNote 2003, Outlook 2007, Money 2007, SyncToy 2.0 beta, QuickBooks and uTorrent.

Trojans Get Agile with Web 2.0 Tricks

Security researchers have spotted Trojans that are using RSS feeds to communicate instead of their traditional method of "phoning home" to get marching orders from command-and-control centers that security researchers have learned to track down and blacklist.

Yuval Ben-Itzhak, chief technology officer for Finjan, told eWEEK that the security firm recently detected three separate Trojans using blogs of limited popularity to receive orders from botnet herders or to feed stolen information back to identity thieves.

The lure of using legitimate sites such as blogs or social networking sites is that attackers can hide behind the legitimacy of Web 2.0 brands such as Google or Yahoo, Ben-Itzhak said.

Windows Home Server, RC Next week?

Two bits of information on Windows Home Server were releaced at TechEd 2007 "Day 3".

First there are only going to be two ways for people to get the SKU. First is from an OEM like HP the other method will be from System Builders. If you were hoping for picking this up at your local big box off the shelf, like me, we are out of luck. there might be one exception to this and that could be the current beta test population. He was hopeful that they would be able to provide RTM to the existing beta testers, but as with all things there is no guarantee.

The second bit of really useful information was that we might see an RC version of Home server as early as next week. If you have been holing out rebuilding your home server on RC, like me, then with any luck next week is what you have been waiting for.

Windows Home Server Technical Brief for Home Computer Backup and Restore

WindowsÂŽ Home Server will automatically backup your home computers to the home server and allow you to easily restore the entire computer or an individual file or folder to a previous point in time. The Windows Home Server Backup solution backs up only the data that has not already been backed up. Even if you have several copies of the same data on different computers, the data is backed up only once on your home server and your home server keeps track of what data was stored on each home computer on each day. This makes it efficient in the time it takes for backups to complete and the amount of space that is used on your home server.

Windows Home Server Update on the way...

Windows Home Server Team: Hi all. Next week on Tuesday, Nov 27 we will release a new update for Windows Home Server software. This is a scheduled update - part of the ongoing process of continually enhancing the customer experience with Windows Home Server. The new functionality will be downloaded via Windows Update and made available to existing Windows Home Server customers.

Details are available here, but the main benefit of the update is that it will improve the remote access experience for Windows Home Server users by providing them with a œtrusted SSL certificate for their home servers. That means customers will be able to access their home server from outside the home more seamlessly, without any security warnings. The Windows Home Server team worked closely with Windows Live Domains and GoDaddy, a leading provider of Web domain addresses, to provide the certificate for the homeserver.com web pages customers use for remote access.

In addition, this months update provides a new œDelete All button to let users delete all home computer backups that are stored on the home server, as well as a few improvements to the Shared Folders and Server Storage components of Windows Home Server.
