Talking to Reuters, Yasuhiko Tajima, a professor of constitutional law at Sophia University in Tokyo, said, "We strongly suspect that what Google has been doing deeply violates a basic right that humans have. It is necessary to warn society that an IT giant is openly violating privacy rights, which are important rights that the citizens have, through this service." Tajima heads the Campaign Against Surveillance Society, a Japanese civilian group that wants Google to stop providing its Japanese Street View service and to delete all saved images.

RIAA to stop suing users, cuts them off instead

RIAA has reached an agreement to stop suing individuals who continue to share music illegally, but will cut your internet connection off instead. The decision was reached with ISP's to send a warning letter to individuals who have been suspected or caught by the RIAA, who will set up P2P listening posts to catch individuals and submit their information to their ISP. After 2 or 3 warnings, your ISP will slow your internet connection, and if a user continues to share music illegally, they will be shut off for good. RIAA has sued more than 35,000 people since they began operations in 2003, which was very costly to the music industry and time consuming.

Apple, please stop 'thinking different'

When Apple unveiled its latest Macbook and Macbook Pro the world rejoiced. Steve Jobs and his gang at Apple are excellent at product presentation and sales. One thing that was somewhat overlooked at the launch was the inclusion on of mini-DisplayPort. It sounds great but where did Apple get this DisplayPort mini idea from? It seems as if they came up with the idea to design, fabricate and now push the small form factor display port themselves. It's also astonishing because mini-DisplayPort is following in the foot trails of mini-VGA and mini-DVI which all were wildly adopted?

Microsoft release 2 updates for IE8 on Windows 7 RC

Microsoft has released two new updates for Internet Explorer 8 on Windows 7 RC, via Windows Update. The first update applies only to Windows 7 RC, and will be fixed in the Windows 7 RTM. The first issue resolved is one which, according to the Microsoft Support site, caused the browser to hang, and show this error message: "A webpage is not responding on the following website: (Website name)". The update for this issue requires the browser to restart before it can be applied. The issue is apparently caused by a timer used to detect when web pages have stopped responding, which is normally fine.

Ten New Years Resolutions for the PC Industry

Happy New Years folks and that means it's time for New Years resolutions. We have some suggested resolutions for the PC Industry that will help them...and us!

#1 To the PC Makers: Stop pre-loading shareware. Nothing is more annoying than getting a new PC loaded with "trial versions" of programs. Just stop it.

#2 To Microsoft: Get Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista out there ASAP and make sure IE 7 doesn't hang anymore for no apparent reason.

#3 To Apple: Get that 3G iPhone out the door sooner rather than later. GPS on it would be nice too.

#4 To the RIAA: Just stop it. I mean, seriously, just stop.

#5 To Jack Thompson: Get a new hobby. Better yet, get a life. In a world in which one can't escape "The Girls Next Door" on TV are video games really a threat?

#6 To Google: Please make a Project Management extension to Google Calendar!

#7 To the BluRay and HD-DVD consortiums, please find a way to work together. You're just slowing down adoption (massively).

#8 To Amazon: Just because you think it might be patentable doesn't mean you should try to patent it.

#9 To Bloggers: This year is the US Presidential Election. Just remember, just because someone doesn't agree with your political opinion doesn't mean they're a bunch of sub-human monsters who eat babies.

#10 To Internet Users: Just remember that there is another person on the other side of that screen. Just because they aren't there to punch you in the nose doesn't mean you should surrender any semblance of civility on-line.

Have a Happy New Year!

Time labels iPhone as Invention of the Year

Stop. I mean, dont stop reading this, but stop thinking what youre about to think. Or, O.K., Ill think it for you:

The thing is hard to type on. Its too slow. Its too big. It doesnt have instant messaging. Its too expensive. (Or, no, wait, its too cheap!) It doesnt support my work e-mail. Its locked to AT&T. Steve Jobs secretly hates puppies. And—all together now—were sick of hearing about it! Yes, theres been a lot of hype written about the iPhone, and a lot of guff too. So much so that it seems weird to add more, after Danny Fanboy and Bobby McBlogger have had their day. But when that day is over, Apples iPhone is still the best thing invented this year. Why? Five reasons:

New Android commercial attacks iPhone

Verizon released a new commercial which takes shots at the missing features for the iPhone. The website droiddoes.com has a countdown timer to the release of the new Android 2.0 mobile phone. The ad attacks a variety of things Apple doesn't do or won't do on the iPhone. The advertisement attacks Apple's oversights on the iPhone like a real keyboard, running simultaneous applications, being customizable, allowing widgets, open source development and interchangeable batteries. The advertisement also takes a stab at the iPhone's camera, saying the Android based phone will have a 5MP camera and will be able to take pictures in the dark. The Android 2.0 phone will release this November on Verizon.

Windows Vista Shutdown Fix

The Vista™ Operating system can experience delays during shutdown if running a managed service that was designed with a ServiceBase.OnShutdown method that does not explicitly call the ServiceBase Stop() method on system shutdown. This update facilitates quicker system shutdown by explicitly setting the service state to stopped after calling their OnShutdown, if the service has not already called the Stop() method.

SP1 Unsuccessful in Preventing Vista Hacks

It seems that Microsoft has been unsuccessful with SP1 in preventing hackers from turning a pirated, non-genuine copy of Vista into genuine copies that pass activation. The article initially looked at two of the most popular hacks (OEM BIOS hack and the grace timer hack) but after a little digging ZDNet were able to transform a non-genuine install into a genuine one. 'After a few minutes of searching the darker corners of the Internet and a few seconds in the Command Prompt I was able to fool Windows into thinking that it was genuine.'

Drug cops stop to play Wii during raid

Being a drug cop must be a rather interesting job, particularly during raids; those under the target of the law tend to be rather wealthy, and certainly aren't afraid to show it. According to CNET, a group of drug cops showed their awareness of this by taking the time to play on a suspect's Nintendo Wii… during a raid. An alleged drug dealer named Michael Difalco was taken into custody by police, and his house raided for drugs as per usual. During said raid, the cops took some time out of their task to enjoy some virtual bowling, the whole time being caught on camera.

Windows 7 will give your laptop longer battery life

It's no surprise that Windows 7 is getting good reviews and praise as the operating system is proving itself to be a rock solid platform. It seems as the news is only getting better as Microsoft and Intel showed off how Windows 7 when paired up with Intel's new processor line will increase battery life for laptops, according to PCMag.com. The two companies worked together to help develop technologies that will allow for sustained performance while improving battery life in the next generation of Intel processors. "The dramatic leap in battery life appears tied to a technology known as Windows 7 timer coalescing, a technical term for minimizing the time in which the processor enters a high-performance, full-power state.
