Americans Spend $1,200 A Year On Tech Gadgets

In their annual survey, the Consumer Electronics Association has found that U.S. households are spending an average of $1,200 a year on electronic gadgets; the average home has 25 consumer-electronic devices, with the top five growth sectors being digital video recorders, network routers or hubs, MP3 players, cable modems, and digital cameras. " It's interesting to note here that two of the fastest movers and shakers in the CE industry are devices that enable home networking. The other three products enable consumers to create, shift or transport digital content ," said CEA research analyst Elena Caudle. Teenagers spend about $350 a year, which is about half of their total discretionary income, while adults with children and teens spend up to $500 more on CE purchases than the national average.

30% of U.S. households owned a router or hub (8% more than last year), 62% owned a cable modem (6% increase), digital video recorders were in 25% of U.S. households (8% increase) while MP3 player ownership was up 7% to 32% and digital-camera ownership rose to 62% of households. The five most owned products were televisions, 92% of households; DVD players, 84%; cordless phones, 82%; and cellular phones, 76%. Other product categories with significant growth included high-definition TVs, which are in a quarter of U.S. homes.

PowerUser.TV e62: Finale

The PowerUser gang is back for one more regularly scheduled episode. This week they discuss how robots could demand legal rights (they poo-poo the idea, as is to be expected), they review the Windows Vista system requirements, they discover that the Zune is making no dent in the iPod market ( shock! ) and we revisit a previous story about Nigeria becoming a toxic waste dump.

In gaming news, Nintendo is making good on 3.2 million Wii straps, and of course our rambunctios gang can't keep their dirty minds out of the gutter. Joel Hulsey gives his top game picks of 2006, as does Brad Wardell. And finally we bid a fond but somewhat bittersweet adieu to all of the fans that have stuck with us for 62 episodes.

We will be back in the future with non-scheduled "special" episodes. Thank you to everyone who has supported us over the last year and a half.

Happy Holidays to All and Best Wishes for the New Year, from the PowerUser Team!

Yahoosoft!: A Match Made in Heaven or Hell?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past week (which, if you are, you have my sincerest condolences), by now you’ve no doubt heard of the latest drama to hit the technology industry: Microsoft’s attempt at grafting search-engine Yahoo onto its cold steel heart with a whopping $42 billion USD unsolicited bid, which came after Yahoo politely declined a friendly buyout agreement. If my calculations are correct (and, more importantly, if the analysts’ calculations are correct), that’s a 62% premium on Yahoo’s current worth. Now, assuming that good old Steven Ballmer hasn’t been struck with a case of the Tom Cruise crazies, the two top obvious questions are: “What is Microsoft thinking?” and “How does Yahoo feel about the whole deal?”
