Spy The Spy - Monitor Folders For File Changes And Additions

I was always puzzled that Microsoft did not integrate a software into Windows that would monitor specific folders for file changes and list the changes in a table to provide the user with means to analyze those changes.

Google Earth Used as a Spy Satellite?

The homicide detectives from the Melbourne department have recently started investigating a murder case, which seems to be taken out of a thriller that cannot be broadcasted before midnight. The body was found wrapped in plastic bags and dumped in the front yard of an empty Melbourne house that had an overgrown lawn, which covered the body all too well.

Canada unmasks Chinese spy network

Researchers at the University of Toronto traced pieces of malicious code found on more than 1,200 computers worldwide and discovered that it originated from China. The Globe and Mail reported that the software had tapped into top secret documents from governments in 103 countries. Most troubling was the discovery of said software on the computers of Tibetan exiles, leading to the presumption that a goal of this spy campaign was to acquire information regarding the Dalai Lama. The spy network, dubbed "GhostNet" was uncovered by Canadian researches at the Munk Institute for International Studies in the University of Toronto. The researchers have notified international intelligence agencies and it is presumed that further investigation is being undertaken.

Pentagon admits to having spy satellites

The Pentagon has gone on record to officially say that they do have satellites that spy on other satellites. The Mitex micro-satellites, which were launched in 2006 have been flying around in the geostationary ring and have made observations of the DSP 23. DSP 23 is a satellite that can monitor missile launches but went offline shortly after reaching orbit. The UN was particularly upset about the idea of satellites that can track and in theory destroy other satellites. The UN also pointed out that China may be interested in the news as the US has criticized the country and its leaders for a lack of transparency.

F-Secure slams mobile spying application

Antivirus company F-Secure has severely criticised the security of a mobile spying application.

The Finnish security company said that Retina-X Studios' Mobile Spy is "not built to be secure".

Mobile Spy is an application aimed at businesses wishing to monitor their employees' Windows Mobile smartphone traffic. The full text of SMS messages can be recorded and logged to a "private account" accessible by the business, as well as incoming and outgoing call numbers, and the URLs of websites visited.

F-Secure claims to have found a way that anyone can access those private accounts. The antivirus company said that, if a user logs in to the Mobile Spy demonstration account, and goes to view SMS logs, there are demonstration samples from a database of messages...

Newest spy gadget: social networking

As spy gear goes, a social-networking Web site doesn't quite have the same cachet as some of James Bond's high-tech gadgets.

But the U.S. intelligence community is taking a page from popular online hangouts like Facebook and News Corp.'s MySpace to help encourage operatives to share information. In December, agency leaders are launching a social-networking site just for spooks.

The classified "A-Space" ultimately will grow to include blogs, searchable databases, libraries of reports, collaborative word processing and other tools to help analysts quickly trade, update and edit information.

It comes on the heels of the year-old Intellipedia, a Web site modeled after the popular online encyclopedia Wikipedia. Intellipedia has been gaining traction among the intelligence agencies and already has nearly 30,000 posted articles and 4,800 edits added every workday...

Hack turns iPhone into spy-phone

US security consultant, Rick Farrow, has used H D Moore's security testing tool, Metasploit, to crack the iPhone, which allows a hacker to control an iPhone remotely.

Farrow demonstrated how he gained root access to the iPhone and installed an application that can record conversations on and near the iPhone, transforming the device into a spy tool. It also allowed him to remotely access recently modified files, locally stored e-mails and view the iPhone's Web browsing history.

"Using a specially crafted Web page utilising an iPhone exploit (now patched) he gained root level shell access to the phone -- which means he could do anything that the iPhone is capable of from his laptop," explained Jarno Niemelä, security researcher for the security vendor, F-Secure.

Spyware bill's chances uncertain in Senate

An antispyware bill that the U.S. House of Representatives passed this week earned praise from cybersecurity groups, but faces an uncertain future in the Senate. The bill, which would create penalties of up to five years in prison for some spyware-like behavior, is a "needed piece of legislation in order to protect consumers," said Kevin Richards, federal government relations manager for Symantec Corp. Many online identity theft schemes start with spyware on a victim's computer, he said.

Though versions of the Internet Spyware Prevention Act (I-SPY) have passed through the House in the last two sessions of Congress, they stalled in the Senate. The House passed I-SPY and a second spyware bill in May 2005. But the Senate failed to act, partly because of concerns that the second proposal, called the Securely Protect Yourself Against Cyber Trespass Act or SPY Act, too broadly defined spyware. The Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee also became hung up on what approach to take for a spyware bill -- a criminal penalties approach similar to I-SPY or a broader approach attempting to define spyware technologies similar to the second House bill.

Security Startups Score Cash

"Now pay attention, 007!"

In the James Bond novels and films, it fell to technical expert Q to invent the gizmos and cunningly concealed weapons that helped the British spy cheat death and save the world.

From a biometric keyboard to blast-proof curtains, the inventions on display in the real world this month came from five technology firms in the final round of the Global Security Challenge, a competition to identify the world's most promising security startup.

"I'm sorry that Q wasn't at the judging table," said Sir Richard Dearlove, who from 1999-2004 was the real-life Cthe code-name given to the head of British spy service MI6.

Intel Quad-Core Notebook Spy Shot

TechwareLabs claims to have acquired a spy shot of an Intel quad core enabled notebook that boasts compatibility with the 8XXX Nvidia cards and much more.

This laptop will supposedly support dual 8800 Video cards, a 17" screen and chassis, two internal Hard Drives up to 160GB each, and the new quad core Intel CPU all using a 975 chipset.

We don't think the cooling solution is up to the task of cooling that amount of heat but time will tell.

Microsoft seeks patent for office 'spy' software

Microsoft is developing Big Brother-style software capable of remotely monitoring a worker’s productivity, physical wellbeing and competence.

The Times has seen a patent application filed by the company for a computer system that links workers to their computers via wireless sensors that measure their metabolism. The system would allow managers to monitor employees’ performance by measuring their heart rate, body temperature, movement, facial expression and blood pressure. Unions said they fear that employees could be dismissed on the basis of a computer’s assessment of their physiological state.

UK to invest in massive 'spy' database

Something you would have thought would only be part of action movies may be a reality soon in the UK. The government has plans to create a massive database that will store all phone calls, emails, and internet logs of all UK citizens. The information can be stored for as long as 2 years.

The database will take time to create, but there are trials and tests set in place with pre-determined people.

This is a feasible solution to solving criminal cases, and lowering crime rates, however, many will see it as a very large invasion of privacy.

UK Home Office minister, Lord West, noted:
"It is a cross-government program, led by the Home Office, to ensure that our capability to lawfully intercept and exploit data when fighting crime and terrorism is not lost."

I would like to hear you opinions, Neowin. In an act to ensure safety, is this action taking it too far?

Webroot: Vista's Defender stops 16% of 25 Spyware Samples

According to the results of a two-week study of Windows Defender by Webroot, a leading antispyware vendor and Microsoft competitor, the product missed 84% of a sample set of 25 spyware, Trojan horse programs and keyloggers. Many of the samples were unable to install on Vista and simply crashed, but others got through just fine. Webroot's Spy Sweeper product spotted all of the samples.

Gerhard Eschelbeck, Chief Technology Officer at Webroot, said the point of the study was not to draw specific conclusions. He acknowledged that 25 samples was a tiny fraction and that it may be possible for Microsoft or other competitors to pick samples of malicious code that would evade Webroot's Spy Sweeper. " It's important to leave the interpretation up to individuals. People need to make their own conclusions about it ," he said. Eschelbeck noted that Microsoft should update Windows Defender quicker than on a weekly basis. Webroot has been hurt by Microsoft's entry into the desktop and enterprise security business and the company's decision to offer Windows Defender as a free download.

FTC: More spyware-fighting tools needed

Organizations and law enforcement agencies fighting spyware are making progress, but new tools in an antispyware bill stalled in the U.S. Congress could improve the efforts, a member of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission said Monday.

One of the spyware bills passed by the House of Representatives earlier this year, the Spy Act, would give the FTC authority to impose civil fines on companies that distribute spyware to consumers' computers. The bill, along with the Internet Spyware Prevention (or I-SPY) Act, have stalled in the Senate since passing the House in May and June.

The FTC has the authority to collect profits from spyware operations and collect money for consumer redress, but it lacks the authority to impose other fines, as it does when going after spammers, said Commissioner Jon Leibowitz, speaking at a spyware forum in Washington, D.C.

Windows Vista with SP1 integrated on MSDN

Keith Combs is reporting that images of Windows Vista with SP1 already baked in are appearing on MSDN TechNet subscriber downloads. After checking myself, I find that only the English, French, German, Japanese & Spanish x86 versions are available thus far. Maybe they are still updating and the x64 versions will start appearing in a few, more on that later folks.

Keith is clearly ecstatic: "My download took minutes. Being first helps. It flew down the fiber pipe to my house at 1.8meg per second. I wish all my downloads were that fast. Your mileage will vary. I'm planning on "enhancing" my VM first thing. I'm going to enable IIS7, then drop PHP, MySQL and Wordpress on it. When I get it working, I am going to do a screencast on the process. Getting ready to record how to do that with Windows Server 2008 in a few minutes. Enjoy!"

He also mentions that the blog post is a rolling update, later he will post some more screencasts of the resulting installation. Thanks Keith!

Update: Microsoft have posted an announcement regarding the SP1 images availability on it's MSDN subscriber download sites: "The first wave includes English, French, German, Japanese and Spanish versions of Windows Vista with Service Pack 1. New files will be added every couple days, depending on server bandwidth, until all downloads are published."

Wi-fi security system is 'broken'

More holes have been picked in the security measure designed to protect the privacy and data of wi-fi users.

The latest attack lets criminals defeat firewalls and spy on where someone goes and what they do online. It comes after a series of other attacks that, experts say, have left the basic protection in wi-fi comprehensively "broken".

But compatibility issues mean that many will have no alternative but to use the much weakened protection system.
