Canada unmasks Chinese spy network

Researchers at the University of Toronto traced pieces of malicious code found on more than 1,200 computers worldwide and discovered that it originated from China. The Globe and Mail reported that the software had tapped into top secret documents from governments in 103 countries. Most troubling was the discovery of said software on the computers of Tibetan exiles, leading to the presumption that a goal of this spy campaign was to acquire information regarding the Dalai Lama. The spy network, dubbed "GhostNet" was uncovered by Canadian researches at the Munk Institute for International Studies in the University of Toronto. The researchers have notified international intelligence agencies and it is presumed that further investigation is being undertaken.

Hack turns iPhone into spy-phone

US security consultant, Rick Farrow, has used H D Moore's security testing tool, Metasploit, to crack the iPhone, which allows a hacker to control an iPhone remotely.

Farrow demonstrated how he gained root access to the iPhone and installed an application that can record conversations on and near the iPhone, transforming the device into a spy tool. It also allowed him to remotely access recently modified files, locally stored e-mails and view the iPhone's Web browsing history.

"Using a specially crafted Web page utilising an iPhone exploit (now patched) he gained root level shell access to the phone -- which means he could do anything that the iPhone is capable of from his laptop," explained Jarno Niemelä, security researcher for the security vendor, F-Secure.

Pentagon admits to having spy satellites

The Pentagon has gone on record to officially say that they do have satellites that spy on other satellites. The Mitex micro-satellites, which were launched in 2006 have been flying around in the geostationary ring and have made observations of the DSP 23. DSP 23 is a satellite that can monitor missile launches but went offline shortly after reaching orbit. The UN was particularly upset about the idea of satellites that can track and in theory destroy other satellites. The UN also pointed out that China may be interested in the news as the US has criticized the country and its leaders for a lack of transparency.

F-Secure slams mobile spying application

Antivirus company F-Secure has severely criticised the security of a mobile spying application.

The Finnish security company said that Retina-X Studios' Mobile Spy is "not built to be secure".

Mobile Spy is an application aimed at businesses wishing to monitor their employees' Windows Mobile smartphone traffic. The full text of SMS messages can be recorded and logged to a "private account" accessible by the business, as well as incoming and outgoing call numbers, and the URLs of websites visited.

F-Secure claims to have found a way that anyone can access those private accounts. The antivirus company said that, if a user logs in to the Mobile Spy demonstration account, and goes to view SMS logs, there are demonstration samples from a database of messages...

Microsoft Vista SP2 beta: Nothing new has been added (yet)

If you install the beta of Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) expecting to see visible changes to your version of Vista, you'll be sorely disappointed. At least in this initial beta, all the changes are under the hood, and even they are far from earth-shaking. Microsoft says that it has fixed compatibility problems with the third-party Spy Sweeper and ZoneAlarm security applications, enhanced hardware support for Direct X, improved Wi-Fi connections after a system resumes from sleep, improved Windows Search, added support for the newest Bluetooth specification (2.1) and rolled up all previous Vista updates.

Microsoft: Removal of Group Policy Tool from Vista SP1 'Not Significant'

As part of a request to help modify its apparent stance on the upcoming removal of Group Policy Management Console from Microsoft's Windows Vista Service Pack 1, a company spokesperson told BetaNews, "The removal of the GPMC tool with Service Pack 1 is not significant to the majority of Windows Vista users."

This despite the continued presence of remnants of the GPMC campaign, which touted its inclusion in Vista as a boon. "The Group Policy Management Console, or GPMC, was available as a download for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003," reads one TechNet page.

"A scriptable Microsoft Management Console, GPMC offered a single administrative tool for managing Group Policy. GPMC is now built right into Windows Vista. This means that whenever you're ready to create or edit , you'll have easy access to the best tool for the job."..

The Driver Verifier Manager (DFV) is a great tool for troubleshooting driver problems by identifying the troubling driver. Windows Vista Hardware Assessment 2.1 Available

The Windows Vista Hardware Assessment is a tool that will find computers on a network and perform a detailed inventory of the computers using Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI). Through use of the detailed inventory data, the tool will assess and report whether the computers can run Windows Vista or the 2007 Microsoft Office system, where to find drivers for devices on the computers, and provide recommendations for hardware upgrades, where appropriate.

The Windows Vista Hardware Assessment tool does not require the deployment of agent software on the computers being inventoried and assessed. It provides a secure, quick, and easy way to determine which computers, in a networked environment, are ready for Windows Vista and the 2007 Microsoft Office system software.

For home users and users with a few Windows XP computers to migrate, use the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor to understand the readiness of your computer for Windows Vista.

Newest spy gadget: social networking

As spy gear goes, a social-networking Web site doesn't quite have the same cachet as some of James Bond's high-tech gadgets.

But the U.S. intelligence community is taking a page from popular online hangouts like Facebook and News Corp.'s MySpace to help encourage operatives to share information. In December, agency leaders are launching a social-networking site just for spooks.

The classified "A-Space" ultimately will grow to include blogs, searchable databases, libraries of reports, collaborative word processing and other tools to help analysts quickly trade, update and edit information.

It comes on the heels of the year-old Intellipedia, a Web site modeled after the popular online encyclopedia Wikipedia. Intellipedia has been gaining traction among the intelligence agencies and already has nearly 30,000 posted articles and 4,800 edits added every workday...
