Red Hat Accuses Oracle of Forking Linux Code Base

Red Hat to offer whitebox Linux desktops globally

The world's largest Linux vendor Red Hat will release a pre-installed desktop version of Linux globally in September. The new Red Hat desktop targeting primarily small business users will be available on cheap whitebox Intel PCs and, according to Red Hat, will not try to be a Windows clone.

The new Linux desktop platform, called Red Hat Global Desktop, has been announced on Red Hat's site and promises that the desktop will have wide global distribution through Intel's channel of white box system builders.

The Red Hat strategy contrasts markedly with Dell's push to offer Ubuntu Linux to consumers on some of its desktop and notebook models in a limited release to the US market. Red Hat is not targeting consumers but small business users and local government agencies who want to keep the cost of hardware and software to a minimum...

Red Hat to MS: Let's Talk Interoperability

Even though patent talks between Microsoft and Red Hat broke down last year before Microsoft went on to sign a technical collaboration and patent indemnity deal with Novell, Red Hat is still willing to work with the Redmond software maker on the interoperability front.

But the Linux vendor wants to limit those talks to pure interoperability between Windows and Red Hat Linux, with the goal of solving real customer problems, Paul Cormier, Red Hat's executive vice president of engineering, told eWEEK.

"I want to talk to the folks at Microsoft about our two operating systems and how we can work together to solve real customer problems without attaching any unrelated strings, such as intellectual property," he said. ..

What's Red Hat doing in the virtualization business?

Even before Red Hat bought the virtualization company Qumranet, with its Linux KVM (Kernel Virtual Machine) platform, Red Hat had made it clear that it was moving into virtualization in a big way. At its annual Red Hat Summit in June, the Linux powerhouse
announced that it would be deploying its Embedded Linux Hypervisor, oVirt, which is based on KVM in its server line. This lightweight, embeddable hypervisor currently enables users to run Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Windows VMs on Linux.

Red Hat Rated Best Overall IT Vendor

For the fifth year, CIO Insight polled IT executives on how well their major vendors deliver business value, reliability and quality. This year's winner? The No. 1 vendor? None other than Linux distributor Red Hat. Perhaps even more impressive than Red Hat beating such name brand companies as Google and Hewlett-Packard was that Red Hat also earned a remarkable 97 percent loyalty rating. In other words, 97 percent of Red Hat's customers plan on continuing to do business with Red Hat in the future. Oracle, which is doing its best to snatch Red Hat's business away from it with its Oracle Unbreakable Linux, should keep well in mind.

How does Red Hat win the hearts and minds of its corporate customers? A close look at how IT executives evaluated Red Hat and the other vendors shows us that where Red Hat really stood out above the rest was in how its products met expectations for lowering costs and meeting commitments on time and on budget.

Red Hat, Novell sued for patent infringement

In this sue-happy world, it was only a matter of time before Linux became a target. A company has dared to declare a patent infringement against not one, but two Linux vendors.

IP Innovation and Technology Licensing Corporation are suing Red Hat and Novell for patent infringement in three similar patents including US Patent No. 5,072,412 for a "User Interface with Multiple Workspaces for Sharing Display System Objects" issued December 10, 1991. According to the plaintiffs, Red Hat and Novell are deliberately and wilfully infringing on the patents since they were previously notified of the infringement and continue to sell the Red Hat Linux system, the Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop, and the Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, according to the lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Marshall Division.

Red Hat Inc. has postponed until January the launch of a new Linux software product for personal computers that would directly compete with Microsoft Corp's Windows operating system. Red Hat Chief Executive Matthew Szulik had said in September that he expected to get the new product on the market by the end of November. Late on Monday, spokeswoman Leigh Day said the company planned to release the software in January, five months after the original target date of August that it had promised customers.
