The Beijing Online News and Information Panel has accused 12 dating websites in Beijing of being a cover for prostitution and has ordered them to clean up their act: " The outrageous pimping content in some websites is very shocking ." The 12 sites are loaded with similar information, including " service items, pricing and contact information ." One of the websites, ostensibly a lonely-hearts dating service, contained a posting supposedly from a young woman describing herself as a " professional pleasure giver ." The online panel, which has representatives from government, academia and the public, has ordered a complete purge of such information from the sites by June 1.

FireWire Interface to Get Speed Boost

Universal Serial Bus 3.0 is just around the cornet, but it does not mean that its brother IEEE 1394 standard (also known as FireWire and iLink) has ceased its development. In fact, this month the 1394 trade association said that it had ratified the 1394-2008 specification, which significantly improves bandwidth of the interconnect.

The 1394-2008 high performance serial bus standard updates and revises all prior 1394 standards dating back to the original 1394-1995 version, and including 1394a, 1394b, 1394c, enhanced UTP, and the 1394 beta plus PHY-Link interface. It also incorporates the complete specifications for S1600 version with 1.6Gb/s bandwidth) and for S3200 version, which provides 3.2Gb/s speed.

New web threat takes advantage of iFrame vulnerability, making its way to the U.S.

Security firm Trend Micro said that it has discovered a new threat that is currently making the rounds on the Internet. The threat is based on an iFrame vulnerability in webpage code to plant a keylogger to steal user passwords, or turn computers into proxy servers for various other attacks.

Trend Micro said that the threat could have originated from a computer Trojan-making kit and relies on a scenario in which website owners are unaware that they are compromised, and website users are unaware that surfing through seemingly legitimate pages can actually be part of an infection process. This process, according to the security firm, involves a malicious IP address that is inserted into the HTML code (HTML_IFRAME.CU), a download of malicious Trojans (TROJ_SMALL.HCK, TROJ_AGENT.UHL, TROJ_PAKES.NC, PAKES) from another URL via a JavaScript routine.

TrendMicro said that the threat was initially detected in Italy, but apparently is making its way to the U.S.

London to have satellites that monitor your speed

In a trial that can only be described as Big Brotherly, London is going is going to start trials of attempting to stop speeders from space. The basic idea works around that the vehicles are equipped with information about speed limits for public roads. A satellite will monitor the speed of the car vs. the pre-installed data to determine if the car is speeding. If the car is found to be speeding then one of two things can happen. The car can either be slowed down by the satellite (voluntary mode) or the car can alert you that you need to slow down but won't actually adjust the vehicles speed (advisory mode).

Microsoft Adversary Rises Instinctively at Yahoo Bid

More than a decade ago, Andrew S. Grove, then the chief executive of Intel, aptly described the hypercompetitive mentality of Silicon Valley in his book title "Only the Paranoid Survive."

Now, the anxious efforts by Google, led by its chief executive, Eric E. Schmidt, to try to scuttle Microsoft’s $44.6 billion bid for Yahoo may well seem like a bout of Valley paranoia. After all, many industry analysts view the acquisition plan, announced Friday, as a desperation move by Microsoft to buy a bigger stake in the online advertising and Internet search markets, even as it and Yahoo fade further behind Google.

The fast, forceful response from Google is a product of Mr. Schmidt’s history and personality. Mr. Schmidt, 52, had spent much of his career battling Microsoft at Sun Microsystems and Novell, before joining Google in 2001.

Microsoft Announces Game for Nintendo DS

Although we probably wont ever be seeing Mario on the Xbox, one of Microsofts latest franchises will be hitting a Nintendo system.

Google Gets Ready to Rumble With Microsoft

A CEREBRAL computer-scientist-turned-executive, Eric E. Schmidt has spent much of his career competing uphill against Microsoft, quietly watching it outflank, outmaneuver or simply outgun most of its rivals.

At Sun Microsystems, where he was chief technology officer, Mr. Schmidt looked on as Scott G. McNealy, the company’s chairman, railed against Microsoft and its leaders, Steven A. Ballmer and Bill Gates, as “Ballmer and Butthead.” During a four-year stint as chief executive of Novell, Mr. Schmidt routinely opined that it was folly for any Microsoft rival to “moon the giant,” as he put it; all that would do, he argued, was incite Microsoft’s wrath.

Coming Soon: Nothing Between You and Your Machine

John Markoff: It has been more than two decades since Scotty tried to use a computer mouse as a microphone to control a Macintosh in "Star Trek IV."

Since then, personal computer users have continued to live under the tyranny of the mice, windows, icons and pull-down menus originally invented at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center in the 1970s and popularized by Apple and Microsoft in the next decade.

Last year, however, the arrival of the Nintendo Wii and the Apple iPhone began to break down the logjam in technological innovation for the way humans interact with computers.

Microsoft data centers go beyond the container

Microsoft's data center of the future will be more like a trailer park.

Only the concrete pad will need to be built on-site, with everything else shipped in as a pre-manufactured unit.
