Despite the fact that Microsoft has expressed its official position regarding testing Windows Vista Service Pack 1 ahead of its finalization, there is simply too much of a hunger for the service pack.

06.12.2007Windows Server 2008 RC1 with Hyper-V Beta Build Clarification
Just a quick note to anyone that plans on testing the new Windows Server 2008 RC1 with Hyper-V Beta. The build Microsoft posted
here is in
fact a much newer build than either the original Server 2008 RC1 or Vista SP1 RC1. While the original RC1 was Build 6001.17051 for Server 2008 and
6001.17052 for Vista SP1, the new Server 2008 RC1 with Hyper-V beta is substantially newer at 6001.17119 and may even contain further
stability/performance improvements to the actual OS so it may be worth checking it out even if you don't intend to test the Hyper-V bits. Also note
that due to Hyper-V being a 64-Bit OS only option, there is no 32-Bit build available of the newer Server 2008 RC1.

26.08.2006Vista SP1: RC1 test build goes to 15,000 testers
Microsoft has delivered yet another test build of Windows Vista Service Pack (SP) 1 to testers. On November 14, the new build — designated the
SP1 Release Candiate (RC) Preview — went to a slightly expanded group of 15,000 pre-selected testers. Microsoft made a first public beta of
Vista SP1 available to 12,000 testers in September. The new build, No. 6001.17042, can be downloaded by invited testers from Microsoft’s
private Connect test site.
Microsoft has been making builds of Vista SP1 available to progressively larger groups of testers since earlier
this spring. The company has been dangling the promise of making a test build Vista SP1 available more broadly, first as a semi-public build
downloadable by Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) members, and ultimately, by any interested parties. Microsoft posted a note to MSDN two weeks ago
announcing avaiablility of a Vista SP1 beta, but later pulled the note and apologized for the false alarm.

04.09.2006Simple guide to test Vista SP1 RC1 on a separate partition
Long Zheng: A couple of people, dozen at max, have expressed interest in testing out the
soon-to-be-public Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Release Candidate release. There are many ways of installing and testing
operating systems and even more so service packs so it can be rather confusing and cumbersome experience for some people out there. Out of all the
possibilities, I do myself and recommend everyone to always start fresh, but that doesnt always mean from the command prompt.
Whilst release candidate will be a very good representation of the final product early next year, it still means youll have to forfeit this
release sooner or later so it is not recommended you replace your existing Windows installation with it. Especially with all the problems people have
been running into uninstalling their service pack betas which itself sounds like a really bad idea anyway, its ideal to set up a fresh install. And
the most convenient fresh install is on a separate partition on existing disks.
Formerly the process of splitting a partition
involved third-party software which is time-consuming and sometimes unreliable, however a less-known disk management function in Windows Vista will
simplify all that.

Don't expect huge UI changes after installing SP1

12.12.2007Changes to UAC in Vista SP1: Much less than meets the eye
A video is making the rounds showing how Vista SP1 has significantly improved Vista's immensely annoying User Account Control (UAC). But there
appears to be less to the improvement than meets the eye --- hardly any changes were made to UAC in SP1, and it remains a very big Vista annoyance.
Microsoft blogger Michael Kleef
has
made a video that he says illustrates how much better UAC is under SP1 than before SP1. It very nicely shows that when you create a new folder in
Program Files, you only need to go through one UAC prompt under Vista SP1, rather than four previously.
