Sony announces the VAIO W series, possibly a netbook

Sony Japan has just put up a product page for the latest entry into the VAIO line-up of computers, the Sony VAIO W series. Though there is no mention of a netbook in the translated version of the web page, the W series features hardware more commonly found in netbooks, such as the Intel N280 Atom Processor (1.66 GHz). The computer also runs Windows XP with Service Pack 3. The W series will be available in 3 colours (white, brown and pink) and features an isolated 'chiclet' style keyboard similar to the one found in the CS series. Sony laptops disable Windows 7's XP Mode

It's not looking good for Sony Vaio owners who were looking to get their hands on a hot, fresh release of Windows 7 - Sony has disabled hardware virtualization in their laptop range, thus rendering Windows XP Mode in Windows 7, and many other Virtual Machine Based products, such as VMware and Virtualbox pretty much useless. Sony claims that they are disabled for "security" reasons - which doesn't really seem to make any sense; Sony has also said that they will re-enable hardware virtualization on "select" laptops from the Vaio range.

Sony recalls 440,000 Vaio laptops

Sony is recalling 440,000 Vaio laptop computers worldwide because of wiring faults that could cause overheating.

The recall concerns 19 Vaio models in the TZ series manufactured between May 2007 and July 2008 - but does not include models sold in the UK.

Sony said wires have been put in the wrong position near the hinge, while a flaw in the circuit board that controls the screen also may cause overheating.

The company said that a number of people had been burnt by the fault.

According to the company 373,000 of the Vaio laptops were sold worldwide in some 48 countries, with 67,000 sold in Japan.

Sony said that anyone who believed their machine was part of the recall should contact the firm to organise an inspection and rework of the wiring where needed.

Sony unveils VAIO TT Series: Carbon fiber, Blu-ray, SSD

Sony has taken the covers off of the latest in their VAIO series of notebook computers. The VAIO TT Series of notebooks will be the worlds lightest Blu-ray capable computers available on the market.

Sony's goal with the TT series seems to be focused on packing a lot of power into an ultra portable device. Weighing in at only 2.87 pounds and being less than an inch thick, the new series of VAIO notebooks isn't just about looks. Behind the carbon fiber shell (yes, seriously), you can find an Intel Centrino 2 processor and an optional dual channel 256GB (2 x 128GB) solid state drive with RAID technology. If the 11.1 inch 16:9 LED display is a little too small for you, there's also an HDMI output so you can connect the notebook to your HD television of choice and watch your Blu-ray movies in full 1080p high definition. To round it all off and offer you some connectivity on the go, the device also integrates with Sprint's Wode Area Network, though a separate subscription, through Sprint, is required.

With all this power and grace, there's also a sizable price tag. The TT series of VAIO notebooks will start off at $2000 US, though the inclusion of Blu-ray will raise the price to $2700 and the optional SSD drive will raise the price even high than that. If you have the money, then all you have to do is worry about which color to buy. The TT series will be available in premium carbon black, silk black, champagne gold and crimson red.
