A lady in Washington state who apparently purchased a computer in late 2006 bearing the "Vista Capable" sticker, and who only later discovered it was only capable of running Vista Home Basic, has filed a class action lawsuit against Microsoft in her home state, seeking in excess of $5 million.

27.08.2008Panorama report on Wi-Fi was 'misleading'
A Panorama programme claiming that Wi-Fi creates three times as much radiation as mobile phone masts was "misleading", an official BBC
complaints ruling has found. Two viewers complained that Panorama exaggerated the grounds for concern and wrongly suggested that Wi-Fi installations
give off higher levels of radiation.
A further complaint suggested that the programme misleadingly presented an experiment to test whether
certain people were hypersensitive to such radiation. Professor Michael Repacholi, who appeared in the programme, also complained that the scientific
issues had been presented in an unbalanced way, and that the treatment of his own contribution to the programme was unfair.

03.12.2007Did Microsoft Lose XP SP3 on the Way to Vista SP1 RTM?
Windows XP Service Pack 3,
Windows Vista Service Pack
1 and
Windows Server 2008... In the
end its all Windows to Microsoft. Right? Well... in all fairness, you do have to keep in mind that all Windows platforms are equal, but some Windows
operating systems are more equal than others... And in this context, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 are privileged over Windows XP. Microsoft
is essentially choosing to ignore the vast majority of Windows users.
According to data from Net Applications, the install base
of XP is over 75% of all the operating systems, with Vista at just over 10%. But statistics are by no means impressive to Microsoft. Throughout the
development process of Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008, the Redmond company has been pushing Windows XP SP3 to the background. Even though XP SP3
was developed alongside Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008.

05.02.2008Microsoft: 5573 Does Not Imply a Specific XP SP3 Build
Marius Oiaga: Microsoft is not saying much at all about the third and final service pack for Windows XP, and whatever information does manage to get
through the translucent filters implemented by Steven Sinofsky, Senior Vice President, Windows and Windows Live Engineering Group,
presents little
relevance. A recent reference related to XP SP3 is Build 5573 from KB951126. Judging by the fact that XP SP 3 Release Candidate 2 Refresh 2 was Build
5508, speculation began circulating of a
new version
number 5573, that could even be the RTM build for the service pack. I contacted Microsoft on the matter, and this is not the case.
"The reference comes from 'A multiprocessor computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows XP stops responding on a black screen after
you resume the computer from hibernation' KB article 951126 available here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951126/. The file versions discussed on the Microsoft Help and Support page, referring to a
hotfix for Windows XP SP3, are accurate," a Microsoft spokesman revealed in an email to Softpedia.

17.04.2008Next Version of Windows Live Messenger
Microsoft has placed customer
input at the top of the list
of the features selection
process for the next versions
of Windows Live Messenger. And
as such, the Live messenger
users are invited to
contribute to the evolution of
the Microsoft instant
messaging client. For this, a
thread in the Windows Live
Messenger newsgroup has been
set up to catalyze discussions
and voting on the ideas for
9.0, 10.0 and beyond.
"Please note that
this is not a guarantee that
these features will be worked
on, but it's important for us
to know your thoughts. Feature
selection for Messenger takes
into account many, many
factors including customer
input, business needs,
available resources and level
of effort estimates. It's a
complicated process but one we
know will ultimately produce
the best possible Messenger we
can build", informed
Microsoft.

15.02.2007Carphone Warehouse accused of misleading iPhone customers
Staff at Carphone Warehouse, the UK-based mobile communications retailer, are alleged to be misleading customers about Apple's iPhone insurance
policy, the BBC has claimed.
The information being communicated to prospective buyers or customers, who expressed fears about losing their
iPhone, was that they would have to buy a new 18-month contract at a cost of GBP630 (Sterling) in the event of losing their handset, which was not
true, an undercover report by the BBC claimed.
According to Apple's iPhone policies, the customer would have to buy a new handset in
the event of losing the iPhone, but the old 18-month contract would still be valid. Carphone staff members in three out of the five stores analyzed
did not reveal this information.

03.12.2007Vista SP1 and XP SP3 Have Failed to Break the Market's Windows Fatigue
Statistics for the operating system market come in different flavors and from a variety of sources but they all have one thing in common: indicating
that Windows is losing ground to Mac OS X and Linux. As far as Microsoft is concerned, it reached the apex of the operating system market with the
launch of Service Pack 2 for Windows XP back in 2004. Since then, it has been all down hill for the Redmond giant. Sure, the slope is by no means
steep enough for a hard Windows fall, just sufficiently inclined through the erosion produced by Mac OS X and Linux that the ground is slipping from
under Microsoft's proprietary platform, slowly but surely...

Kael Rowan: Ive been working in Microsoft Research on a project called Code Canvas for a while now, and we finally got through enough of the patent
process so that Im able to release some details publically.
Code Canvas is a research prototype focused on spatial orientation of
code as the foundation of an integrated development environment. It is a spatial (2.5D) representation of source code, visual designers, and
project-related artifacts that utilizes infinite panning and smooth semantic zoom for navigation. It is also extensible to allow analysis overlays and

26.11.2008Google's Answer to Wikipedia
Google recently announced Knol, a new experimental website that puts information online in a way that encourages authorial attribution. Unlike
articles for the popular online encyclopedia Wikipedia, which anyone is free to revise, Knol articles will have individual authors, whose pictures and
credentials will be prominently displayed alongside their work. Currently, participation in the project is by invitation only, but Google will
eventually open up Knol to the public. At that point, a given topic may end up with multiple articles by different authors. Readers will be able to
rate the articles, and the better an article's rating, the higher it will rank in Google's search results.

16.02.2006Vista is Watching You
Are you using Windows Vista?
Then you might as well know
that the licensed operating
system installed on your
machine is harvesting a
healthy volume of information
for Microsoft.
In
this context, a program such
as the Windows Genuine
Advantage is the last of your
concerns. In fact, in excess
of 20 Windows Vista features
and services are hard at work
collecting and transmitting
your personal data to the
Redmond company.
Microsoft makes no secret
about the fact that Windows
Vista is gathering
information. End users have
little to say, and no real
choice in the matter. The
company does provide both a
Windows Vista Privacy
Statement and references
within the End User License
Agreement for the operating
system. Combined, the
resources paint the big
picture over the extent of
Microsoft's end user data
harvest via Vista.

28.05.2008Windows Machines with More than 4 GB of RAM Have Limited Shut-Down Options
Windows Vista computers that come equipped with more than 4 GB of system memory have limited shut-down options. Essentially, the Hibernate option is
no longer available on Vista machines that feature in excess of 4 GB of RAM. This scenario affects both the 32-bit and the 64-bit editions of Vista,
but at the same time also Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Microsoft has confirmed that the issue is related to the large quantity of random access
memory.
"This issue occurs because hibernation is disabled on computers that
have more than 4 GB of RAM. Hibernation
requires sufficient disk space to contain the contents of the computer's memory. Performance is poor on a computer that has more than 4 GB of memory
and that has support for hibernation. Therefore, Microsoft has disabled support for hibernation on such computers," the Redmond company
revealed.

19.05.2007Windows Worm Using Your Computer for Flood Attacks
WORM_RBOT.HBZ is the latest threat spotted in the wild that targets the Windows systems and attempts to drop its files on most versions of the
Microsoft operating system including 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP and Server 2003. The worm was discovered by security company Trend Micro, which wrote that
it could easily reach your system because it might be deployed by other malware, or directly, when a user visits a malicious website. Just like other
similar worms, WORM_RBOT.HBZ attempts to create new registry entries to be sure its files are executed every time the operating system is fully
loaded.
But what's more important is that it automatically scans the network shares to drop its files and spread itself on the
network. "It searches the network for certain shares, into which it attempts to drop copies of itself", Trend Micro
wrote in the advisory.

13.06.2008Internet Explorer 8.0 in the works
Thanks to NeoXP
for
posting this in BPN.
Softpedia is claiming
"third party sources confirm
that the next version of
Internet Explorer is already
cooking in the Redmond labs".
Internet Explorer 8.0 is
supposed to be unveiled at MIX
07, at the Venitian Hotel in
Las Vegas this year between
April 30 and May 2. The
session entitled "First Look
at the Future of IE" is
described as "Hear what
Microsoft's browser
investments mean to you, and
make sure you get a voice in
shaping the next version of
Internet Explorer. Hear about
what features and layout
issues are being worked on,
and let us know what causes
you the most problems."
Now, assuming the
above is all concrete fact,
let's hit some speculation.
Microsoft may not release
Internet Explorer 7.x and will
go straight to version 8; an
alpha version of 8.0 is
already an internal release in
Redmond. At MIX 06, Bill Gates
announced that IE releases
would be between 9 and 12
months apart and recently at
CES 2007, Microsoft confirmed
that the development of
Internet Explorer 8.0 had
already debuted. Great right?
No, not so great. A Microsoft
representative at CES 2007
said they expected a period of
18 to 24 months until Internet
Explorer 8.0 hits the market.
ActiveWin.com is reporting the
exact same thing.

15.01.2007HP Wins Judgement Against Pelikan
HP
announced today that Germany-based
Pelikan Hardcopy Deutschland GmbH was found to be in violation of the German law on unfair competition by the Cologne Regional Court, Germany. In a
judgment issued in July and finalized earlier this month, the court ordered Pelikan to cease labeling certain newly manufactured inkjet print
cartridges as “remanufactured.”
HP initiated this unfair competition action against Pelikan last summer after Pelikan refused
HP’s request to voluntarily give an undertaking to cease its misleading advertising. HP had discovered that Pelikan marketed and sold new print
cartridges in packaging that claimed the new cartridges were remanufactured products. In the recent judgment, the court agreed with HP and took the
view that Pelikan’s labeling was misleading to customers.
