05.09.2007Is an offline version of Silverlight coming at MIX next week?
Ryan Stewart: There have been rumors for a while and today TechCrunch says theyve been hearing that an
offline version of
Silverlight is coming to compete with Adobe AIR. Currently, despite a lot of comparisons in the tech media world, Silverlight and AIR have
absolutely nothing to do with each other. Silverlight competes with Flash Player, a product that has been around for a very long time. But maybe thats
changing.
What theyll most likely do is release an offline version of Silverlight that uses SQLite. It would be something like
Google Gears where they install the database with the runtime then developers can write data to it and take their Silverlight applications offline.
They still live in the browser so in this sense, its not quite a 1-1 competitor with Adobe AIR, its a competitor to Google Gears. There are definitely
bits of competition there because one of the big value propositions of AIR is offline access, but theres a lot more too it as well because its a
cross-platform desktop runtime, something I cant see Microsoft doing.

02.03.2008Will Microsoft bundle Silverlight with IE8?
Any day now, details of IE8 will begin to emerge and my question will have a black and white answer. Until then though, I'm free to speculate
about the best way for Microsoft getting Silverlight to the masses. Right now, I don’t see how else they could get quick adoption with minimal
effort. For those who are scratching their heads at this point, Silverlight is essentially a Web-based version of Microsoft's Windows Presentation
Foundation, the user-interface framework in Windows Vista. In other words, Silverlight is Microsoft’s answer to Flash (see, it is possible not
to say Flash killer). The technology is backed by Microsoft’s .Net Framework; designers can use Microsoft Expression Studio and developers can
use Microsoft Visual Studio to put together Silverlight applications for the interactive web. Those interested can choose from various languages,
including JavaScript, Ruby, Python, C# and Visual Basic .NET.

10.07.2009First Silverlight v1.0 Service Release is Live
Mike Harsh: In
the midst of all the work our team has been cranking on for Silverlight v1.1 (controls, databinding, layout, templates, styling and a package based
app model, phew!), we've also been working with customers to address the top set of issues folks have hit with Silverlight v1.0. Today we're happy
to be releasing an update to address many of these issues. The first Silverlight v1.0 service release is now live and includes the following
improvements and fixes:
- Improved media performance and stability, especially for full-screen video. This includes improving A/V
sync, which provides a better experience on lower-end machines.
- HTTP redirection now works for images and other media.
-
Improved support for font managers & Mac Office 2008 fonts.
- Streaming video through proxied network connections only worked through port
80. Silverlight now respects the proxy port settings.
- Allowing access to all content embedded in .zip files with a non-.zip extension.
- Support for logging with Windows Media Services
- Loading XAML from a script tag will now work on all supported browsers.
The first bullet is the big ticket item. It encompasses 4 sizable perf improvements that really make video in Silverlight hum. This
update will be rolled out to all users running Silverlight v1.0 via the auto-updater built into the plug-in. If youre impatient and want to get the
update sooner, you can get it from the
Silverlight installation
page.
