Windows Vista Beta 1 vs. Mac OS X "Tiger
From Paul Thurrotte's SuperSite:
In part one of my comparison of Windows Vista Beta 1 and Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger," I looked at three key aspects of each system: Look and feel, desktop search, and data visualization and organization. For the most part, OS X came out well ahead of Windows Vista, as you'd expect, since it's a polished finished product. Vista, meanwhile, is all knees and elbows, an awkward teenager on its way to maturity.
. Microsoft will iron out the details, I'm sure, but the end result will likely not change much. Specifically, OS X will always be elegant, and Windows will almost certainly lag behind in the fit and finish department. The only questions are how much Vista will improve when compared to previous Windows versions, and whether it will be enough to keep customers from moving to OS X.

26.07.2007Microsoft rechristens Silverlight 1.1 as Silverlight 2.0
Microsoft has decided the next version of its Silverlight Flash-competitor is more worthy of a 2.0 moniker than a 1.1 one.
On
November 29, Developer Division General Manager Scott Guthrie blogged that
Microsoft has
decided to rechristen its next Silverlight release as 2.0. Microsoft plans to make a beta build of the next version of Silverlight available under
a Go Live license in the first quarter of 2008, Guthrie added. (A Go-Live license allows users/developers to begin deploying applications in
production based on the beta.)
Microsoft made
an alpha
version of Silverlight 1.1 (now Silverlight 2.0) available to testers in April 2007. The final version of Silverlight 2.0 is due out in 2008.

29.11.2007Microsoft To Release Silverlight 2 In Late Summer
Microsoft has been working like gangbusters to create the perception that its cross-platform multimedia runtime Silverlight is a viable alternative to
Adobe's Flash, and the vendor will soon put updated tools in the hands of Silverlight developers. In a Thursday blog post, Microsoft developer
Ashish Thapliyal said Microsoft is "targeting late Summer" for its release of Silverlight 2.0, which is currently in its first beta release.
Silverlight 2.0 supports VC-1, WMV, MP3 and WMA content, but Microsoft has no plans to support the Flash video (.flv), used by Youtube and
many other Websites, said Thapliyal. Microsoft's rationale here is to avoid paying licensing fees and to keep the Silverlight download file size
as small as possible, he added.
"Silverlight isn't designed with an extensible codec model in mind, so there is no date/version
announced for this," wrote Thapliyal. A second Silverlight 2.0 beta is due in May, and this version will be very similar to the final release,
according to Thapliyal. He said no details are available about the roadmap for Silverlight for mobile, or Silverlight v.Next, also known as
Silverlight 3.

16.07.2007What Silverlight can do for the Microsoft Download Center
If you’ve visited the Microsoft Download Center in the last month or so, you’ve probably been prompted with a pop-up asking you to try the
Silverlight version of the site. Currently in beta, the new version of the MDC is meant to improve the user experience. Even if Silverlight has hit
version 1.0, there is still no Linux, no Opera and no x64 support, which definitely hinders on who can visit the site. It is currently unclear whether
Microsoft will completely replace the current site with the Silverlight version, but if that were to happen, it definitely would not be soon.
Here’s a detailed article about what Qixing Zheng, from Microsoft Canada, believes Silverlight can do for the Microsoft Download Center.

Moving forward with next-generation software in two critical realms, Microsoft released Wednesday initial public beta versions of its Silverlight 2
multimedia presentation technology and the Internet Explorer 8 browser. The company announced the releases at its Mix08 conference in Las Vegas.
Implemented as a plug-in, Silverlight is Microsoft's horse in the industry's race to provide the most eye-catching visual effects; it
competes with Adobe's Flash Player and related technologies. Silverlight is cross-browser, cross-platform, and cross-device, Microsoft said.
Version 2 features support for managed code and developing with multiple languages, including IronRuby, IronPython, javascript, and .Net.
The beta is available from Microsoft's Web site.
